Dove Colour Radiance Shampoo
Advantages: Pleasant to use, nice scent, soft hair
Disadvantages: Didn't help prevent colour fading
I decided to try this out as I dye my hair every couple of months at home and have been doing so since high school. Aside from damage to hair, which I try to restore with conditioner and not exposing it to straighteners too much, the most irritating thing is the fading of dye that always seems to happen far too quickly. There are a few brands that offer shampoos claiming to reduce fade and keep hair colour vibrant, though I've never found anything, unfortunately including this one, that actually works.
This comes in quite a minimalist white bottle that looks neat and good quality, easily recognisable as being by the Dove brand. They have an ever-increasing range of products and I've got faith in what they produce as being at least somewhat effective, gentle and pleasant to use. This is designed to help repair coloured hair by preventing the fading process through its 'advanced damage care and repair technology'. This involves 'micro moisture serum to help repair hair surface to help lock in the colour and the fibre actives, which are known to penetrate deep inside the hair reconstructing it from within to leave hair with vibrant colour that lasts'. Sounds interesting, but then again, so do most claims on product packaging.
This comes out creamy white and is smooth to apply, lathering well in the shower with water. It's got a pleasant sweet fragrance that makes it lovely to use because it feels like a bit of a treat for my hair. That's one thing I love about Dove; they make things that are practical and usually relatively affordable, whilst being a pleasure to use. It rinses out easily and leaves hair feeling smooth when wet. When drying, I occasionally notice that this, along with a conditioner sometimes, can cause my hair to become a tad greasy the next day, so I don't use much per application any more. After drying hair, it looks a bit healthier, smells nice and feels soft.
Does it prevent colour fade? Unfortunately, I've not found that it does. As I've said, it makes the appearance of my hair that bit more lively, but I don't think it really does anything for the colour. What started of as a vibrant red, despite using this quickly after dying it, began to fade after only a week or two. I tend to wash my hair every day or every other day depending on what I'm doing, but for the first week after dying it I try to minimize how often I wash it. Even this hasn't helped with the colour fade; it's more a case of the colour becoming less vibrant and going from bright to dull, which is what I was hoping the shampoo would help to fight against.
I bought this on offer along with a Dove conditioner (volume boosting), though there's also a colour radiance conditioner that you can use in conjunction with the shampoo, which is, strangely enough, what they suggest for best results. I've used similar products before that target colour fading, applying both the shampoo and conditioner, but without benefit, so I'm not hopeful that this would make much difference.
Would I recommend? Probably not, in the sense that it doesn't seem to do what it claims. Perhaps it'll work better for you; it's still lovely to use, but I'd probably be more inclined to go for a shine enhancing Dove shampoo that makes more of an impact on my hair health.
