Dove Damage Therapy Heat Defense Shampoo
Advantages: An effective and reasonably priced product
Disadvantages: The coconut aroma
I cannot admit to being loyal to any brand when it comes to shampoos and conditioners, but I have a few firm favourites, which I will regularly buy when they are on offer. A brand that I have grown to love over the years is Dove, as I find their products are highly effective as well as caring for my hair, which is thick, curly and reaches just below my shoulders. I've used quite a few of the products in their large hair care range and one of my recent purchases was their Hair Therapy Damage Solutions Heat Defence Shampoo with this review discussing my experience with using it.
I find the appearance of Dove products considerably appealing to the eye with their contemporary design and calming colours, which offer the illusion of relaxation as opposed to the vibrant in your face colours used by some of their competitors. My reasons for purchasing this particular shampoo were based on the fact that it has been designed to protect hair from heat styling damage together with my previous positive experiences with the brand. Unfortunately, my hair is regularly subjected to a hair dryer and either curling tongs or straighteners and I am concerned about the damage that can be caused due to constant heat exposure.
Up until approximately three months ago my hair reached my waist and as the ends were showing signs of damage together with the fact that the UK was basking in high temperatures I decided to take the plunge and have a good few inches chopped off. Not only has my style given me a new image, my remaining hair is in excellent condition although I am still prone to dry ends. Consequently, I need to ensure that I use highly effective products to keep it in tip top condition.
Dove provides us with 250 ml of shampoo in a white coloured sturdy plastic container with a flip top lid, which is located on the upper section. The lid is easily opened and clicks securely back into place. The shampoo is of a good consistency and offers a pearly white high quality creamy appearance. The initial aroma is absolutely gorgeous and reminds me of premium salon shampoos and I would describe it as rich deep floral without being overpowering. I'm not a fan of the smell of coconut, particularly following my overindulgence with Malibu almost 30 years ago, but I'm convinced that I can detect a hint of its aroma.
However, determined to try and test my new purchase I dispensed a small amount into the palm of my hand and it was easily applied to my wet hair and created a good lather. The only negative point for me here is that the aroma intensified and I felt somewhat overwhelmed with what I'm quite certain is coconut. As I wash my hair on alternate days I found that one application was sufficient to completely rid my hair of grease, grime and the lacquer that I regularly wear. The shampoo was easily rinsed away without leaving any residue and I was able to carry out my clean test by running my fingertips against my scalp until it squeaks. Thankfully, the aroma was subtle once the product was entirely rinsed away.
Dove informs us that the shampoo contains micro moisture serum, which apparently "creates a shield around the hair fibre, helping to protect against damage caused by heat styling". This is quite a difficult claim to evidence and whilst my hair was left feeling squeaky clean and shiny I cannot admit to noticing any difference with this product when comparing it with my other Dove shampoos. It is always necessary for me to follow up with a matching conditioner, as otherwise my hair will resemble a tangled mess and will subsequently knot.
I have used the entire contents of my bottle, but it is doubtful I will repurchase due to the fact that I am not a fan of the coconut aroma. I had expected the shampoo to be luxurious and whilst the shampoo carried out its job well I found it a little ordinary. The shampoo tends to retail for around £2.50 per bottle, which I think is pretty good and if you're a fan of coconut you will love this. However, for the reasons discussed above, it loses a star from me.
The shampoo should be used within 12 months of opening with the bottle being recyclable once empty.
I hope you found my review useful and thanks for reading.
Summary: A reasonable shampoo although I will not be repurchasing due to the coconut aroma
