Advantages: Smooth, sleek hair
Disadvantages: Price
As a girl with thick, wavy hair who also colours it, I cannot do without my GHD's for achieving sleek hair that doesn't look like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards. I have had several pairs of hair straighteners over the years, and none have ever come close to the power of these. Almost every girl has heard of GHD's (which stands for Good Hair Day if you are interested!), as they are the straightening tool of choice for many hairdressing salons.
I bought them from HQhair.com and forget how much I paid at the time as it was a few years ago, however they now retail on their website for £106. I decided on the Salon Styler version as the ceramic plates are much wider and more suitable for thick, wavy hair than the standard width ones. They are 4cm wide as opposed to the standard 2.5cm ones which gives them the extra 'oomph' needed to tackle my unruly mane!
They arrived packaged in a white box with a gold abstract design on the side, this was the cover which slides off to reveal the straighteners nestled safely inside. The GHD's themselves are plain black, with golden ceramic plates. There is an on/off switch on the inside of the handle and a bulb which lights up when switched on.
When I was next ready to straighten my hair, after a quick consult of the safety instruction booklet which was included, I plugged them in and switched them on. Whilst they are heating up to their optimal temperature of about 180 degrees, the red light flashed rapidly to let you know they are still heating up. This only takes about 30 seconds before the red light becomes a continual one and they are then ready to use.
GHD recommend that you comb or brush your hair thoroughly before using these, as due to the sheer temperature, any small knots in your hair will get sort of 'sealed in' and the next time you brush it you will feel it!
I separated my hair into two sections (top and bottom) and clipped the top section up whilst working on the bottom section. I sprayed my heat protection spray through it before use (as I always do) to offer my hair some form of relief from what I was about to put it through! I combed through each section before running the straighteners through it, spending about 5 seconds on each strip from root to end (my hair is just past my shoulders).
It takes me about 10 minutes to straighten my whole head of hair using these and I find them so much easier to use than any straighteners I've had in the past. I don't have to spend nearly as long straightening my hair and they get it much smoother and sleeker.
After use I always unplug them and put down on a heat mat to protect the surface of my dressing table from getting burnt whilst they are cooling down. I'd say they take about 25-30 minutes to become completely cool and I don't store them away until they are cold as I don't want anything else in my drawers to melt!
I'm so glad I bought these as although they are at the top end of the market they are well worth it.
Summary: Best Straighteners I've ever used!
