Advantages: Heat up fast, safety warnings if you leave them on
Disadvantages: None really!
I am a firm addict to the GHD straighteners and even top hairdressers will tell you that these straighteners are the best on the market today. What we all did before these were invented I do not know!
There are a lot of straighteners on the market and GHDs price tag is slightly more than some - but you pay for quality. If you buy them from the Official GHD site (www.ghdhair.com) you pay £116.49 for the standard pair. If you have very fine or thin hair you could go for the Mini version which are smaller - these retail on the website for £106.99. Both come with a carry bag and 4 full sized GHD hair products as well as next day delivery - which if you ask me is very good value for money. You can also buy GHDs from your local salon or places like Amazon, but to be honest the GHD site gives you so many extras at such a good price that is the best place to buy them from.
GHDs have ceramic plates which heat up very quickly. The advanced ceramic heaters and aluminium plates give a smooth surface which reduces static and gives you a smooth finish. There is a beeping mechanism which sounds when you turn them on and sounds again about 30 second later when they are fully heated up to let you know they are hot enough - which again is handy. If you accidentally forget to turn them off they have an automatic shut down mode called Sleep Mode which enables after 15 minutes, cools the straighteners down and they then continually beep to remind you to switch them off. These I think are the only straighteners with this safety idea in place. The GHDs now also come with universal voltage meaning you can take these on holiday with you anywhere in the world and they'll work perfectly. And the new rounded ends to the GHDs mean it's easier to curl your hair with them now as well if you want to try out a different look!
GHD also have a great returns and repairs department. You get a 2 year warranty on your GHDs and if they for any reason break or stop working you simply call up GHD to tell them, send them into their repairs department and they will either fix them or send you a new pair very quickly. They even sent my friend a cheque to refund her for the postage she has paid for to send them in which is brilliant service. Mine however I have had for a good 4 years and there is nothing wrong with them - I think they will last at least another couple of years and I use them every day without fail.
Obviously if you are going to use any heated appliance on your hair every day you are likely to damage your hair so it's worth using a heat protecting spray before you use them and investing in good heat protecting products like shampoos, serums etc. But to be honest if you use any heated appliance everyday your hair will feel the effects, so that's not just something caused by GHDs.
These are the best straighteners on the market and I wouldn't reccommend anything else.
Summary: Worth the price tag - the best on the market
