INTRODUCTION

I was first introduced to GHD hair straighteners in 2002 when I opened a hairdressing salon, I had always owed straighteners but never really used them all that much until the hair straightening boom in early 2000.

GHD had never even crossed my mind, until I got a GHD rep walking through the salon door showing me samples and the straighteners themselves, I was instantly taken aback but their sheer heat and overall performance of these fantastically slim and compact tools.

Ever since I have stocked and sold the straighteners in the salon, these consisted of very version ever made including the standard black and the limited edition irons. Over the years these have changed in shape and the features are always updated to keep customers happy.

This year after four years with my old faithful MK3 straighteners, they packed up on me so I had no choice but to upgrade. I settled for the new 2008 limited edition IV pure white irons.

ABOUT GHD

Good hair days GHD for short, was founded in early 2001 by an Australian guy called Martin Penny. He designed these remarkable straighteners and they became a huge success as salons soon picked up on their performance and wanted to not only use them but promote and sell the product within their hairdressing salons.

With the help of celebrities and professional hairdressing salons, GHD have gone on to be a huge success across the globe, therefore expanding the company in producing products, limited edition straightening irons and styling brushes.

GHD have also been known to support breast cancer awareness organizations over the past three years, they have designed and sold limited edition pink straighteners to help raise money and awareness for the cancer charity. For every pink pair sold a donation is made to the charity, last year over 30.000 pounds was raised by the sale of the pink irons alone.

The GHD brand has become the most wanted hair straightener on the current market, although they are very expensive these still fly off the shelves at this time of year as every girl wants them.

PRODUCT

My new hair straighteners are the 2008 limited edition white gloss IV irons, they are pure white in colour and have all of the features that any other styler has. They also do these in a black high gloss finish and are sold and advertised as dark and pure limited editions.

These dark and pure straighteners were released at the same time and come complete with a very stylish fully zipped hard carry case that is heat resistant and has a really pretty floral design on the front. This is great if you are on the go as you can even put hot straighteners into the case without it burning, or having to wait for them to cool down.

The IV version has much rounder ceramic plates then the original stylers which help when you are trying to create flicks and soft curls these also straighten perfectly as the plates are slightly larger than the original MK3 irons.

These limited edition pure straighteners also come with a styling DVD that shows you in step by step detail how to achieve certain looks, the DVD is very easy to follow as enables you to get the professional looks that, looks like you have been to a professional hairdressers.

As a hairdresser I can easily create these styles but if I was a novice and didn't know where to start these straighteners and the DVD would really help.

The straighteners themselves come with many cool features, my favorite by far it the built in sleep mode. This will automatically turn off my straighteners if they have been left on and unused for half an hour, this is a great little function for me as I am always in a hurry and I forget to turn them off. I have lost count of how many scorch burns I have on my dressing table from my original MK3 straighteners, when I have accidently left them on all day.

The fact that they all have an extra long cord helps as my plug socket in the bedroom is miles away from the mirror, now I don't have to move the mirror every time I want to straighten my mane.

FEATURES

The IV limited editions are exactly the same as any other GHD straightener, the heat and the components remain the same, but GHD have added many new features to the newer irons to completely satisfy the customer.

If the sleep mode wasn't enough to get you running out to buy a pair then here are some of the other new features that GHD have included in the new stylers.

Shiver mode is designed to let you know if your straighteners are at risk, this is something I didn't even know about until now, if your straighteners get cold anything below eight degrees they can break, it is something to do with the cold damaging the circuit board when they are fully heated up. If they get to cold at any time they will automatically shut down until the air temperature rises above the eight degrees. I don't think this will benefit many unless you take them to the North Pole to straighten you hair, but it is good to know it has this function.

Smooth and slightly larger ceramic plates have been added to disperse the heat evenly on the hair, this will help you get nice smooth shiny hair that will not go static. I find these newly improved plates much better for achieving curls as they form much smoother and do not contain any lines, these lines appeared constantly when I curled my hair with the MK3 irons.

Unlike the MK3 straightener these bleep and flash at you to let you know that they have reached the correct temperature, once you hear the bleep you are set and you can continue to straighten your hair, they take roughly twenty seconds to heat up fully.

The only feature that has remained the same is the voltage change from a 120V-240V, as standard they came with a 240V plug attached, but if you go away on holiday you can undo a screw on the plug to release a two pin plug that will adapt these so they can be used in any 120V socket. In my personal experience when these are used abroad they do not produce as much heat as they would in the UK, but they are still hot enough to straighten your hair.

Like with any GHD styler that is bought you also get a two year warranty from GHD, so this is good if you damage of break them in any way as GHD will either fix or replace any damaged of faulty goods.

PACKAGING

These white irons came in a rather posh white high gloss box with outer protection sleeve. The outer packaging has all of the logos and descriptions on and a unique black velvet floral design on the front, which is soft to touch.

The main box opens from the center and contains three separate compartments on the right hand side you get the straighteners, in the middle is the instruction and product manual, DVD and on the left hand compartment is the hard heat proof case.

I know the box is not important, but it certainly looks very lavish and protects your investment fully. The boxes are security sealed so you know that it is only you that has been in it.

REGISTERING YOU GHD STRAIGHTENERS

On every set of GHD hair straighteners you get a unique serial number, this is located on the irons by the on off switch. A sticker with a hologram will display your unique serial number and on the power cord you will also see the number on a hologram sticker that displays the voltage instructions.

Once you have your serial number you need to register your straighteners with GHD to qualify for the two year warranty, this can be done by gone online to www.ghdhair.co.uk and click register straighteners and filling in your details, or you can complete the registration form enclosed in you instruction manual and send it off to GHD.

You must register your straighteners as soon as you buy them to get the two year warranty.

PRICE / AVAILABILITY

These GHD limited edition dark or pure straighteners retails £134.99 each and can be purchased from any professional hairdressing salon that stocks GHD or you can buy them online at various websites, but you will pay more as you will have postage costs as well.

I notice that ebay are currently selling these GHD straighteners at very cheap prices, but 99.9 percent of these straighteners will be fakes from china. So if you do buy from ebay be sure to look for those priced at 134.99 or close to this amount to ensure they are genuine.

I as supplier I can confirm that these cost us well over a hundred pounds so if you are getting them cheaper than a hundred pounds they have to be fakes, as no supplier in their right mind would let these go any cheaper than they paid for them.

You can also get standard black GHD irons from as little as 109.00 a pair for the mini and standard irons and 119.00 for the salon wide plate straighteners.

These too can be purchased from www.ghdhair.co.uk.

OPINION

I have to say that GHD have excelled themselves with these new irons, the added features are fantastic. I thought I was happy with my last pair but these have exceeded my expectations and I am completely satisfied at paying the money for them.

If ever GHD improve their irons again, they are going to have a really tough act to follow. If anything I am not sure how they can actually improve on this latest design.

The IV straighteners are very compact and easy to use, although they do take roughly two weeks to break in. This being so they don't leave line prints in your hair, I tend to spray hair spray over the plates to gunk them up a bit, I personally find them much nicer and easier to use when they have been worn in a little bit.

Even if you a hair styling novice these can work wonders for you, with the heat and the snazzy new functions these are a must for anyone who straightens their hair.

Yes they are very expensive, but they really are very good and they come with a two year warranty so you can be sure that you will have them for at least two years, my last set lasted me four years so in my opinion they really are money well spent.

Summary: Great straighteners that serve thier purpose, These are a must for any straightening queen.
