Boots Permanent Hair Colour
by sparkleychel
Boots permanent hair colour rich dark brown 3.4.
I have been using hair colorants for years due to going grey in my early 20's. I have naturally dark brown hair , it is very dark almost black so when buying hair dye i always go for the darkest brown shade there is, usually it's 1 shade under black . I have to do it every 3-4 ... weeks to keep the roots at bay and have probably tried every dye on the market in this time. I have no brand loyalty when it comes to buying and buy whichever has the right colour in stock in my local boots or superdrug and if it's on offer then ever better .
The boots permanent hair colour was on offer at 2 for £5 a bargain , normal price is £3.36 which is still very good value . The box contains 45ml tube of conditioning hair colour, 45ml bottle of developing lotion, 30ml tube of colour lock conditioner, instruction leaflet and gloves.
Firstly every home hair dye will tell you to do a strand test 24-48 hours before use and boots is no exception and advises that hair colourants can cause severe allergic reactions. A skin test must be preformed 48 hours before use . I have to be honest and say i have never done one . 2 reasons why ,the 1st is how can you ? if you mix a small amount of the dye together to use for a skin or strand test , you are then told to throw any unused mixture away , as it should be used as soon as you open it. That has never made sense to me and i'm not buying another box just for a tiny bit . And the 2nd is i take a crazy amount of antihistamines on a daily basis so i figure if i was suddenly to become allergic i'd probably be ok .
Obviously if it is your 1st time using any hair colourant i would recommend you do a test .
To start wear an old t-shirt [ i have a t-shirt and towel just for hair dyeing ] remove any bath mats from the bathroom and tuck your shower curtain out of the way , take of any jewellery and you are ready to begin.
The Gloves.
Great pair of gloves that come with this dye these are the silicon style gloves [ like the ones nurses wear] as opposed to the plastic papery ones that come with some , great fit and strong enough that my nails didn't break through the end .
Hair Colour and Developing Lotion.
Once you have the gloves on you start by mixing the hair colour tube with the developing lotion, the tube is easy to open you just burst the seal with the lid of the tube, and easy to push the whole contents of the tube into the lotion. This now needs to be mixed together a shake for 15 seconds , I find it better to swirl then shake for a better mix as sometimes the unmixed colour can end up stuck in the spout and leave you with streaky dye . Once mixed together simply unscrew the tip and you are ready to go .
Applying.
The dye is a nice consistency and thick enough so it doesn't drip. I apply it all round the root areas taking small sections and squeezing the dye into the roots before smoothing it along the hair with my fingers. Once the top and sides of my hair are done , i lean over the bath to do the underneath around the neckline . This usually uses up the whole bottle if there is any left over i tend to just apply more to the roots at the front to use it all up .
The Wait.
Now you have finished applying the dye [ wipe of any on your skin] it's time to wait , the instructions tell you if you are blending in grey to wait the full 20 mins [ i tend to wait 20-30 mins just to be sure]
The Rinse.
Put the gloves back on and apply enough water so you hair is wet and work into a lather , now rinse hair until the water runs clear [ 5-10 mins] Warning your hair will feel horrible at this point , very dry like straw.
The Conditioner.
Very disappointed with the conditioner i had to use the whole 30ml tube , left it on for 5 mins and after rinsing, my hair wasn't as soft as it should of been and has been using other dyes . To combat this i then used some extra conditioner [ left over from a superdrug hair dye] wrapped in a towel and left for 10 mins , once rinsed again my hair was lovely and soft .
The Effect.
I was really pleased with the colour , i often find dark brown hair dye is never dark enough for me , but this was a very good colour an added bonus is it hasn't dyed my scalp and hairline a dark brown which has happened with other brands , and was easy to remove from the skin .
The grey coverage is very good and has blended in well with my natural dark brown hair.
Overall
I give is a 4 out of 5 due to the inadequate conditioner. I would certainly buy again , but would purchase some heavy duty conditioner at the same time . Read the complete review |
