Advantages: A good anti-dandruff shampoo that keeps my scalp clean and my confidence up
Disadvantages: Not the cheapest product available
Some brands are so synonymous with quality goods that they are recognised around the globe as a mark of excellence. For me, Head and Shoulders Anti-dandruff Shampoo for Men is one such product. I've been using it without interruption for nine years now and to be quite frank, I've not even considered looking elsewhere.
*So much hair, so little time*
My hair has always grown incredibly quickly (I was one of those babies born with a mane of hair) and it's also very thick, thanks to some helpful genes that were probably passed on by my very thoughtful mother. As a result, I found myself prone to dandruff from a young age. This was probably due to various factors (nasty shampoo, never letting my hair dry out properly etc.) but it was something that concerned me greatly as a young teen and could often leave my scalp feeling somewhat itchy.
For these reasons, a good anti-dandruff shampoo that keeps my scalp clean and my confidence up is a must have for my bathroom or toiletries bag wherever I go.
*Availability and (costly) cost*
Head & Shoulders for men is widely available from the usual outlets (supermarkets, Boots and Superdrug and online retailers) and if it didn't come in a generous 400 ml bottle I'd really begrudge the price. Please remember to decant some into a smaller bottle if you plan on travelling with shampoo in your hand luggage, as airport security will bin anything larger than 100 ml by volume.
Although the current offer listed with this review says that it can be had for £2.29 on Amazon, the typical high street price is closer to £3-4. There are occasional multi-buy offers on Head & Shoulders products in the larger chemists, but in my experience the male version is often and unfairly excluded from these.
The quantity provided lasts me for about two months, using a reasonable amount of shampoo and washing my hair once a day. While I have quite a bit of hair it's not massively long, so those of you with massive side-swept fringes might get through it a lot faster.
*Lightly fruity, lovely lather*
I find that this shampoo has a very pleasant smell that is far from overpowering. I suppose I could describe it best as 'lightly fruity', perhaps with a slight overtone of citrus fruit. It leaves my hair smelling fresh and clean and my girlfriend always approves.
It lathers particularly well, which I've always found psychologically important with personal care products as a good, rich lather has always made me think that I'm getting a thorough clean. In addition to this the copious amounts of bubbles mean that it's possible to give yourself some rather natty towering hairstyles in the bath! While I might be spending a little bit long bathing, I'm willing to bet I'm not the only guy out there guilty of this harmless form of bath time 'sculpture'...
*High tech stuff*
The list of ingredients on a bottle of Head & Shoulders is typically mind boggling, with complicated chemical names for everything. You know, the sort of label where water is called 'aqua'. The facts that are worth pointing out is that it uses zinc and some other chemicals to prevent dandruff and scalp discomfort and that it's PH neutral, which is always good for people with sensitive skin.
I've never suffered from any adverse reactions to this product, but would recommend looking at the ingredients before use to see whether there's anything included that you have a known allergy or sensitivity to.
