On a recent shopping trip to Lidl I was greeted at the door with a display of shampoos and conditioners in very bright bottles with a big sticker saying they were only £1.45 each. Mildly interested I decided to inspect them closer only to find they were Herbal Essences. I remember Herbal Essences being in a clear bottle with a picture of a flower on the back of the bottle that you could see through the shampoo so I admit I was a bit confused but realising Herbal Essences must have had a face lift I started trying to decide which one would suit my hair best.

I have flyaway hair but it's thick and full of bounce so generally find I have to go for a shampoo that contains extra moisturising to weigh my hair down a bit and decrease the static. For some reason most manufacturers don't seem to produce a shampoo for flyaway hair these days so I ended up going for the "seductively straight" shampoo that's designed for dry or damaged hair even though mine isn't damaged.

Herbal Essences are made by Clairol and I'm sure we all remember the advert where the woman is in the shower having a near orgasmic experience because of her shampoo don't we?! I can't remember seeing an advert recently though which is probably why I didn't realise their packaging had changed so much.

The bottle is 400ml so there's plenty of shampoo to go at and I've noticed as the shampoo goes down it reveals the bottle to be tinted pink and not the neon pink it looks when full. The lid is bright green and one of those you press one edge down to lift the opposite edge so there's no lids to remove in the shower.

The description of this is "silk and pear extracts" so what do silk and pear extracts smell like? I can tell you exactly! This shampoo smells very strongly of bubble gum! Yes, according to Clairol that's how silk and pear extracts smell. I wasn't sure how I felt having Hubba Bubba scented hair but decided to try it anyway.

The shampoo is bright pink and quite thick so you don't need much to work up a lather on your hair. The scent of bubble gum remains strong during application too.

What I tend to do when I buy a shampoo and conditioner is first try the shampoo without any conditioner to see what it's like on its own. So for the first wash I only used shampoo to see if this did "tame hair into a sleek line of shine". The shampoo lathered easily on my hair and certainly felt quite moisturising, so much so it took a lot of rinsing to get it out.

Afterwards I dried as I normally do but have to say in no way was I expecting straight hair! I have wavy hair and I can't be bothered with hair straighteners, I just dry with a hairdryer and that's the only bit of heat that goes near my hair so I knew my waves would still be in place which is fine with me. They were indeed still there after drying but I did find my hair felt very soft and silky. As I have thick hair it sometimes feels a bit dry and brittle but this left it feeling lovely.

Happily the bubble gum scent was much less noticeable once my hair was dry so I didn't smell like a sweet shop! In fact after a few hours it had all but disappeared so even though this smells very strong in the bottle it doesn't last long and wouldn't interfere with perfume if you wash your hair in the morning.

I'm very pleased with this shampoo, not only does it leave my hair silky soft without any conditioner but it also reduced the amount of static I have which is always a welcome side effect! I've checked the price online and found most places sell this for about £2 a bottle so I didn't save much on mine but it's reasonable at full price as you get such a large bottle and don't need much. I think the product has improved since the days of the clear shampoo and the packaging is certainly more eye-catching.

I would definitely recommend this shampoo and I'm sure I'll be buying it again.

Summary: Leaves hair silky soft.

Great review but I tried this when it first came out and hated it. Left my hair feeling dry, and in my opinion was nowhere near as good as the previous herbal essences which I liked a lot :)
