Advantages: shiny, soft hair
Disadvantages: a little pricey perhaps?
Having long, thick, coloured and over-styled hair, I like to use a deep conditioning treatment on it once a week to keep it looking in a reasonable condition. I've tried lots of different brands over the years, as I like to try new things, and I'm always on the look out for that miracle product that doesn't seem to exist! I decided on trying a tub of John Frieda's Brilliant Brunette intensive conditioner as I regularly use the Brilliant Brunette hairspray and have found it to be one of the best on the market.
The conditioner comes in a round tub, which is brown in colour. It's a pretty plain looking tub with a screw top lid, but it's functional, and I suppose that's all that counts really.
So what does it do? Well the conditioner is for all shades of brunette hair, and states that it has a 'penetrating formula that strengthens hair, repairs surface texture and restores critical moisture levels.' It also tells me that it creates a 'highly-reflective multi-dimensional shine' to the hair, all of which sounds promising.
Although this is an intensive conditioner, and normally I would use it as a weekly treatment, it does say on the back of the tub that you can use this in place of your daily conditioner if required. Personally I wouldn't do that, just because it would work out far too expensive!
As a daily conditioner you simply apply to the hair and leave 3-5 minutes. As I have never used the product this way, I can't comment on what results it gives.
As a weekly treatment, you need to apply to the hair and comb through, leaving for 15 minutes, which is how I usually use it.
The product is a white cream, and it has an unusual consistency - quite thick, and somehow almost jelly-like! It has a soft, slightly floral scent, but it's very gentle, and I hardly notice it's there when using the product.
It glides through the hair easily, and I find it easy to comb through, although on a couple of occasions I've forgotten to take my comb into the bathroom with me, and so have used my fingers to comb it through, which although a little messier doesn't seem to have any effect on the end result.
When the 15 minutes is up - and I must admit 15 minutes does seem an awfully long time, sometimes - the product rinses away easily. Even when rinsing I can feel that my hair is detangled.
Once dried, my hair feels very soft and also moisturised. With working in an air conditioned office, and at this time of year putting the heating on more frequently, my hair often becomes quite dried out, and in turn becomes brittle. It's good then, that this makes my hair feel hydrated without feeling greasy.
As for that highly reflective shine they promised, well I do think that my hair has looked shinier since I began using this, but it's not a particularly outstanding glossiness, more like it has made my hair look a bit healthier.
This cost £5.49 from Boots, but I got it on special offer for £3.49 which I thought was a bit more reasonable. I think I've had around five or six uses out of the 150ml tub and I think I will have enough for one more.
Overall, this was a good product, it made my hair feel soft and conditioned, and also left a nice shine to it. Although it ticked all the boxes, and I can't think of anything negative to say about it, I don't think there was anything about it that made it particularly outstanding, which is why I'm going to knock one star off.
