I have a couple of mini products that I carry around with me in my handbag in case of hair 'emergencies' and one of them is usually hairspray. I was given a bottle of Frizz-Ease Shape and Shine hairspray, so have been using that for a while. My regular full sized hairspray is another John Frieda one - the Brilliant Brunette Hairspray which I love - and so I had high hopes for this one.

The spray comes in a silver bottle like the one pictured above, and the thing that makes it stand out from most other hairsprays, is that it is non-aerosol, it simply comes in a plastic bottle with a pump action spray.

The bottle states that this is specially formulated for frizz-prone hair, and should deliver flexible hold, so the hair can be re-styled many times throughout the day. It also promises a 'glistening shine' and contains sunscreen to protect the hair.

To use, obviously you just spray over your finished hairstyle to set it. It sprays out in a fine mist and has a sort of sweet smell to it, which is quite subtle and not as overpowering as many hairsprays can be. Also because it doesn't come in an aerosol can, you don't end up breathing lots of it in when you spray it.

The hairspray dries onto the hair very quickly, and does make it feel slightly hard after use, if you use too much. As I predominantly use this to touch up my hair when the style is starting to wilt, that is not a huge problem, as I am only using a very small amount, but I've used this as my main hairspray the last couple of days, and don't really like the feel of my hair afterwards.

So what about these claims that you can restyle your hair even after you've used this? Well I decided to put this theory to the test and used it earlier in the week. After having had my hair up all day, I came home and decided to change it to a sort of half ponytail, with only the top section pulled back.

As soon as I started to run a brush through my hair, exactly what I thought would happen happened. The hairspray that had been in my hair all day started to come out - in big white flakes that made it look like I had dandruff. My hair still felt slightly hard, but I was able to change the style, and it did feel like it still had a bit of hold, but I probably would have needed to spray over it a little bit more to keep it in place. As it was, I decided not to bother as I was going to have to wash my hair to get rid of the flakes of hairspray anyway.

When used alone this does give good hold, as long as you don't mind that your hair will feel a little bit stiff. Like I said, brushing it out makes it flake, so you will need to wash your hair after each use.

As for shine, I didn't think it particularly added any shine - in fact my hair looked no different with the spray than it did without.

A 250ml bottle of this will set you back £4.48 and it can be purchased from Boots.

Overall I have been quite disappointed with this. It's OK, but not really worth the price tag, as there are much better hairsprays out there for the same price which give hold without making the hair feel hard, and do not flake.

Summary: I'll stick to my Brilliant Brunette spray
