Advantages: Smells nice, Nice packaging, Did reduce damage to my hair.
Disadvantages: Easy to use too much which can leave hair dull and lifeless.
Although I have discovered my 'holy grail' product when it comes to a heat protection balm (Kerastase Ciment Thermique, that you smooth into damp hair after shampoo-ing), I'm still searching for a great spray in product that I can use to protect my hair each and every time I straighten it afterwards until it is washed again. So far I havn't found the perfect one but John Frieda's "Straightening Potion" is probably the closest yet.
'Smooth straight styles are just a spray away' according to the packaging of this product. It also claims to work with your hairdryer to deliver a perfect straight style with glossy shine. Salon created it contains revolutionary 'inner smoothing technology' to penetrate the hair strands to smooth and straighten from the inside out and with regular use it promises to repair and protect from all types of heat styling damage. Now, from my hair care courses taken as part of my Uni course, I know for almost a fact that no product can repair hair from split ends and such problems encountered from straightening, but they can protect them and since John Frieda products have rarely let me down in the past I decided to look past this claim of theres and give it a go anyway!
It is packaged in a flat silver bottle with a spray pump. It has a strong fruity scent which I find pleasant enough and it only lingers slightly in the hair after use. I bought this as part of a three for two deal in Boots but it retails at £4.69 per 200ml usually and for the amount you use per use I think it will last a long time and is of good value :-)
I use after shampooing, conditioning and using Frizz-Ease hair serum (another John Frieda product). I spray onto the lengths and undersides of my hair, avoiding the roots and concentrating on the ends. I brush through before blow drying and straightening.
I find that is incredibly easy to use too much of this spray which results in a wet mess that tends to stick to the plates of my straighteners leaving me with very limp, greasy looking hair. If you do use too much you can end up with heavy feeling hair which has an obvious buildup of product in and generally doesn't feel / look very nice :-(
For that reason I now make sure I only use a small amount of "Straightening Potion" and take extra special care to only apply it to the tips and dry areas. When only a small amount is used hair stays lightweight and glossy whilsnt being protected at the same time.
After using this for a few months now, I wouldn't agree that it is a miracle 'potion' by any means and although my split ends have definately been reduced, I just find the product so hit and miss that I am still looking for a better alternative.
If it were a little more lightweight and less sticky I think I would love it, but for now I wouldn't necessarily recommend it as there are many other products available on the market that would perform just as well, if not better.
Summary: Not overly impressed.
