John Frieda Precision Foam Colour Hair Dye
by sas87 I have been dying my hair since I was a very young teenager, using a variety of colours and resulting in a high number of both successes and failures. This is the first time that I have used one of the modern day foam colour dyes, and have been really impressed with the results! I was in desperate need of an image makeover ... after letting myself go a bit since having a baby - but like many new mums, found it difficult to leave my baby long enough to have a salon appointment, and to be honest couldn't really afford the expense! So instead I decided to try dying it myself, using the relatively new John Frieda Precision Foam colour. Having had my fair share of DIY hair dye disasters of the years, I was a little concerned about how it would result especially when you consider the fact you have a lot of hormones in your system post birth. But after reading many glowing reviews and that fact it is advertised as a "salon formulation" I bit the bullet and bought a box (try saying that quickly!). I'm ashamed to admit that after about a year of total neglect, my hair was in pretty poor condition and back to it's natural colour - "miserable mouse" with a hint of grey. I have gone all different colours over the years, but as my natural colour was a blank canvas and had no other dye through it, I decided to be extra brave and go for a blonde shade - in an attempt to reclaim some of my youth and remind myself of my "blonde bombshell" days! I chose 9N Light Natural Blonde. ========================================================================= The product; The dye kit comes in very stylish black packaging with a black and white image of a model - I'm not sure how that helps give an indication of colour on a real person! But there is also a section of the front packaging which is a close up of hair in the particular colour of dye you've chosen. I think I would prefer to see a colour photo of the model after having her hair coloured instead - though the colour on the box is rarely how it turns out anyway. The packaging has the standard colour guide on the side and description of the product on the back. The contents included - Foam application bottle, containing developing solution Colour solution bottle Intense after colour conditioner Instruction sheet Protective gloves The price of the kit is around £10 for a box - so not cheap, but you can often find it on offer. ========================================================================= Application; The dying method is very straightforward - hair dying that is! You are meant to do a patch test 24 hours prior to using, but I like to live life on the edge and skipped that part - but as a responsible adult I should really recommend others do the patch test. To begin with you put the included plastic gloves on - which are stylish black and very thick rubbery material, as opposed to the usual thin, see-through, sweaty, baggy gloves that come in other dye kits. They are quite a tight fit on me, though admittedly I don't have the daintiest of hands. Next you add the bottle of colour liquid to the foam applicator bottle, which contains the developer liquid. After which you GENTLY TILT the bottle from side to side about 10 times - you MUST NOT SHAKE or it will not produce foam effectively. After mixing, you squeeze the foam applicator bottle (not pump) and I was surprised to see a huge ball of foam produced from the fairly meagre looking solution. You spread the foam through the hair with your hands, concentrating on your roots first and spreading through to the ends. The foam goes through the hair really easily, and you continue squeezing and applying until your hair is thoroughly saturated with dye. I was able to successfully squeeze virtually every drop from the bottle into foam, so there was no wastage, and it covered my short/mid length bob way before I'd finished the bottle. It also didn't smell as overwhelming as some I've used in the past. Having a foam solution really is a revelation after only ever using liquid dyes with a thin nozzle applicator previously. It doesn't drip at all and it's almost impossible to miss patches, which makes it far superior to it's predecessors. The amount of times I've ruined clothing (especially slippers) and stained parts of the bathroom from unknowingly flicking/dripping liquid dye is incredible. It's always hours later before you realise too! This will now be a thing of the past. I left the dye on my hair for the full 30 mins - timed from after I had finished applying. During that time I noticed that my hair was definitely going lighter. After that I rinsed the colour out over the sink, and was happy that it didn't take ages to rinse clear or foam up further. I applied the after colour conditioner, leaving it for a couple of minutes before rinsing. Then I dried my hair and inspected the results... ========================================================================== Result; I was initially a little concerned that the colour was a bit brassy, and it definitely wasn't as light as it looked on the box. But I was still happy with the degree of lightening on my previous colour, and the condition of my hair was excellent and incredibly shiny. It's important to remember that my results were after having a baby a few months previously, so I'm just happy it didn't go green! Over the next week after a few more washes, the colour seemed to settle down and look even better and very natural - if not as light as the intended shade. I used the included after colour conditioner once a week for two more weeks (so three applications in total), and it has kept my hair feeling soft - though can't claim it's prolonged the colour any better than my usual conditioner. I think testing the colour preserving quality of the conditioner would be better on a darker dye, such as red which is notorious for fading more than any other colour. ========================================================================== Conclusion; This is a superb quality home hair dye, and I would definitely use it again - but like with all home dyes, the shade outcome is really determined by your original colour, and blondes never go as light as the box unless you are already really light. If going blonde, I suggest doing it in stages and using gradually lighter shades - always choosing a lighter shade than you think you need. The foam really is a fantastic development in home dye, making it easier than ever to apply, and I wouldn't ever choose a liquid dye again. It's pricey, but the results are worth it and it's far cheaper and quicker than a salon treatment. Read the complete review |

John Frieda Frizz Ease Secret Agent Creme
by stickyangel I recently received the John Frieda Frizz Ease 'Secret Agent' Perfecting Creme as a gift, but I'm pretty sure it's one I've used before. It costs £5.29 for a 100ml tube in Boots. It comes in a silvery-white tube with a blue-purple plastic flip top lid. The flip top lid makes it really easy to use and convenient. I also like ... the fact that it stands on it's lid as it means the product is always ready to come out as opposed to having to spend ages squeezing or shaking the tube trying to get it out. The creme is meant to be used on dried hair and to use it you just rub a small amount into your palms then pull it through your hair, concentrating on the ends. It should then have a 'flawless shiny finish', with dry, frizzy ends camouflaged. You can also reapply as often as needed throughout the day. The creme is fairly thin in consistency but it has a smooth, silky, creamy texture. It smells really fresh and fruity and when I've applied it I can smell it in my hair all day. It's really easy to apply to my hair and I don't need much at all, but I do have very fine hair so you may find you need to use more. I find this really does leave my hair looking much smoother and healthier. I get a lot of flyaway frizz through my mid-lengths and ends and they really do disappear when I use this, leaving my hair looking perfectly smooth and sleek. It doesn't feel at all greasy either, unless you overdo it, and I don't feel my hair is weighed down or coated in product. Overall I think this is a good product which I will happily continue to use. John Frieda Sheer Blonde Moisturising Shampoo
by scooch12 I have blonde hair, although unfortunately it's not natural, it comes from a bottle and coloured by myself at home. I sometimes notice that after a few washes, my hair colour dulls a bit and doesn't look as bright and blonde as it does when first coloured - that dreaded word 'brassy' springs to mind after it's been coloured for a couple ... of weeks. I've tried a few products from John Frieda's range of sheer blonde to try and counteract this problem - my first being the original sheer blonde highlight activating shampoo. I actually ended up using this moisturising shampoo a few years ago when it first arrived in the shops as I picked up a full size 250ml bottle unwittingly instead of the original one and had to use it as I wasn't going to let it go to waste. I've since used it again recently when I received it as part of a gift set for Christmas. The shampoo is available for around £5 in the supermarkets, Boots and Superdrug - which is a price that I find a bit insulting really, shampoo I normally use costs at most £2.99 for a 400ml bottle! It is however from a premium brand and can often be bought as part of special offer deals eg 3 for 2 and 3 for £10 offers which will bring down the price a bit per bottle if you want to buy in bulk. The current bottle I have from the gift set has 50ml and if you're not sure, a bottle of this size may be available in the travel toiletries sections for a cheaper price before splashing massive amounts out for the full size versions. The shampoo comes in a pale yellow bottle that stands on it's lid. The full size version bottles have a flip top lid, whereas the small bottle I've got now has a screw top lid. The flip top lid is a much better design but I still have had a few tussles with them - they can sometimes be so hard to push open, especially with wet hands! The clear plastic that the lid is made from is just so strong, I sometimes feel like I need to be a wrestler in order to open it! I suppose this is good while not in use so none leaks out but it makes it incredibly difficult to use sometimes. The design of the lid also makes it quite awkward to empty the bottle when it's nearing the end. The shampoo is white in colour and to me feels very creamy, much creamier than other shampoos. The scent is delicious and definitely is one of the better ones I've tried - it smells just like the lovely shampoos that are used in hairdressers salons although I can't really tell what the scent is, it smells to me like a collection of flowers in the garden but I can't detect a strong scent of any flower in particular. The bottle states that it's sunflower, jojoba oil and white tea but I don't think I can pinpoint the scent to those alone really, perhaps it's just an even mixture of the three put together. The shampoo lathers up very well in wet hair, although I find it's not extremely easy to wash out, especially if you've missed a tiny bit when lathering up. I also find that I do need a fair bit, more than my usual 10p size amount to cover my hair properly. When it has been washed out, I find that my hair is tangle free and I don't need to fight with it to brush through. I have very thick and long hair so normally there's a couple of tangles somewhere. I personally don't use the conditioner that belongs to the same range - I use another non branded one every few days. I have dry hair at the roots but it can end up going greasy quickly on top, although perhaps not as much as it used to when I was a bit younger. This shampoos main aim is to brighten blonde tones in the hair and I have to say that I think it does this well - my hair doesn't look as yellow if that makes any sense, it takes the dirty yellow look away and does brighten it by a noticeable amount even without the conditioner. The problem is though that this moisturising shampoo does make my hair greasier much quicker than it gets when using other shampoos that are specifically designed for that hair type. This is a bad thing because the shampoo costs so much and it then needs to be washed more! I assume this is because of it's moisturising qualities - perhaps it's just moisturising my hair a little too much! I would expect though that it would be good at moisturising dry hair types. When I've finished styling my hair, it does always feel nice and soft but I do find that it needs washing more regularly. I now just use the shampoo every so often, perhaps more so for weekends rather than everyday weekday life and it seems to do the trick. Even just using it a couple of times a week has made a difference to the colour of my hair and I don't feel the need to colour my full head of hair quite so much (although I still need to target those darn roots just as often!). It definitely helps to keep it brighter for longer once coloured. I'll continue to do this until my stash has run out and then I might revert back to using the original sheer blonde shampoo as I find that that one works better for me really but this is purely on my hair type and the fact that it seems around 30p cheaper per bottle. I will probably still only use that one intermittently though too because of the cost factor because it still works out expensive. I just can't justify spending that much money on one bottle of shampoo. I would recommend this shampoo in some respects - I think the moisturising shampoo is great but just not for people like me who find that their hair goes greasy quite quickly at the roots. In those cases, I would recommend trying their original sheer blonde shampoo but I still wouldn't recommend using this exclusively purely because of the large price tag. I think it's fair to give it 3 stars as it does really help coloured blonde hair out but it is very expensive and isn't suitable for all hair types. Thanks for reading :o) Read the complete review |
