Advantages: Gentle on the eyes, recommended by medical professionals for eye cleansing

Disadvantages: Too harsh for treated hair

Johnsons baby shampoo is easily recognizable with the clear bottle showcasing the bright yellow liquid making it stand out against the other shampoos in the aisle. I had always bought Johnsons baby products when the children were young but now that my children are all well passed toddler stage I thought that I had finished with Johnsons baby products for good.

Recently however my eyes became very sore and red, of I went to the chemist who recommended eye drops for red\sore eyes which I used as instructed. There was no improvement, if anything my eyes were becoming more red and swollen so off I went to the optician for a second opinion. After a full eye test and examination he concluded that I had an inflammation on my eyelashes.

I asked if I needed antibiotic eyedrops etc. and he said "no, just buy a bottle of johnsons baby shampoo, put a little into a small amount of hot water and wash all around your eyes twice a day". Now I've heard of the whole no more tears advertisement but I was shocked that an optician was recommending that I should wash my eyes out with shampoo morning and evening.

I went back to work planning to make a doctors appointment and mentioned to one of my colleagues what he had said. She shook her head in agreement with what he had said, telling me that when she took her elderly mother to the hospital to have a blocked cyst on her eyelid removed they had sent her home with instructions to buy a bottle of johnsons baby shampoo add it to hot water and bathe the eye in it and only bring her back if it didn't improve. This did indeed work and she avoided minor surgery.

My mind was changed and off I went to make the purchase, the price at under £2.00 for a medium sized bottle was in line with my normal product and the shampoo claimed to be as gentle on eyes as pure water. I began using it that evening mixed with warm water applied around the eyes with a cotton pad, a few days later my eyes were back to normal.

As I still had a large amount of shampoo left I decided to use it on my daughter who is now 4, I had forgotten the lovely chamomile smell and the ease of use. The shampoo was quite a runny liquid which easily lathered up and covered her head. I had completely forgotten about this shampoo and have endured all manner of positions for washing my daughters hair, from lying her down, bending her forward and rinsing with the water from one of her teapots, holding a facecloth over her eyes etc. and each and every method usually resulted in tears. We had even bought her one of those big rings which go under the hairline so that the water and shampoo don't go into the eyes which didn't work at all.

For the first time in a long time, hair was washed without a single scream of pain. Looking back I don't know why I stopped using it on her I just got it into my head that it was only for babies.

I'm glad I have rediscovered this shampoo and will continue to use it on my daughter until she is old enough to choose and use her own shampoo.

As for myself, a hairdresser friend warned me previously that although people consider this a mild shampoo it is actually quite harsh on coloured hair so I wouldn't use it on my own hair, but I certainly wouldn't have any problems putting it in my eyes again.

Summary: Just cos they ain't babies anymore doesn't mean you can't use it
