Joico K-Pak Deep Penetrating Reconstructor 150ml.
The first point I must make about this review is that it is for the Joico Deep Pack Penetrating Reconstructor. Dooyoo have the category K Pac and previous reviews take this to refer to the reconstructor, but there are also other products prefixed with KPac including shampoos and conditioners. The product I am reviewing is sold in a tube packaging not a bottle as shown in the photograph.
Let me start by saying that my hair is a challenge to say the least because it is naturally thick and wavy, with a tendency to be coarse and frizzy. Also the fact that I have it coloured and highlighted every couple of months, and repeatedly subject it to daily GHD straighteners doesn't help, and so it is important to adequately nourish it. Most days I will use shampoos and conditioners that I often purchase from The Poundshop- this include my favourites- Timotei, L'Oreal Elvive and Aussie, but every now and again I will purchase a more expensive treatment and this is one of my all time favourites.
Joico are an American company and until last year were new to me. I saw their products on Amazon and decided to take a closer look at the reconstructor treatment which was getting in excess of a 4* rating.
It claims to give-
* Immediate improvement in strength, texture and appearance
* Increases hair's shine
* Improves manageability
* Repairs damage
In addition to this the product also claims to seal the hair cuticle and to impart moisture- so is essentially a treatment for dry and processed hair- in other words mine!
I loved all these claims and then discovered that it also had a coconut fragrance which I absolutely adore and so I made my purchase some months ago.
Now I am sure this product would be enhanced by the use of matching shampoo and conditioner as I mentioned before there are complimentary products in the range, but I try to keep my cosmetics and toiletries budget down wherever I can, as if you purchased all these high end products it simply wouldn't be affordable. I might try them one day- maybe if I receive a voucher, but for now the reconstructor is my only purchase to date from the range. Amazon sells this for £11.70 which is a saving on the recommended price of £14.95. Over on Amazon.com it is $12.89- just over £8, so I think I will stock up next time I am in The States visiting my son. For now a cheaper UK source is over at Cheap Smells where the price is £10.90. This is expensive but the product is a treatment and not designed to be used every day.
How to Use And My Opinion
To use this product you apply to shampooed damp hair and leave it on for about 5 minutes. It is a lovely white creamy coconut scented liquid and you don't need much to coat all the hair thoroughly, even if like me you have long hair. It is an absolute pleasure to use as the fragrance is so lovely. After rinsing off which is easy as it does so without leaving oily residues on the hair, you can towel dry and then blow dry and style as normal. The comb glides through the hair and the condition is really improved after only one treatment. I find that my hair is softer, more manageable, easier to straighten and to style, and feels more under control- especially in humid or wet weather when normally my hair presents even more of a challenge. It is also shinier. As this is a protein treatment and not a conditioner you can also follow the application after rinsing with a conditioner of your choice. I have also done this and I feel it is the best way to proceed - the attributes of the product are better if you take the time to do this 3 step approach. I only discovered this by doing extensive research as it does not tell you to do this on the tube. This I feel is poor as many reviews I have read about the product seem to endorse this including several from professional hairdressers.
I tend to use this couple of times a month and my tube has plenty left in it after several months use. I would say this works out to cost about £1 per treatment maybe less, so in that respect it is more expensive than Aussie 3 Minute Miracle or other protein treatments. Additionally these products are often on special offer so they are significantly cheaper, but I would say they are less effective than the Joico if you are seeking instant results which are long lasting. This is what I love about the product, I tend to notice that my hair remains in good condition for longer, and even my hairdresser asked me if I had used any different conditioning treatment as my hair was noticeably easier to style.
I have been mentioning the website Make-up Alley a lot recently in my reviews but I absolutely love this site because it has enabled me to research products thoroughly before purchasing so I have had very few mistakes recently or regrets. Their review range extends to hair products and when I looked today over 80% of almost 300 reviewers would repurchase this product. It gets over 4* out of 5 which for them is a pretty good testament to the effectiveness of the product. This is also where I discovered that advice about applying conditioner afterwards which is not recommended on the product instructions.This website can be found at www.makeupalley.com
It is also important that you do not use this product too frequently as it can damage the hair making it brittle and prone to breakage- the exact opposite of what you want. Once a week or as I do twice a month is plenty.
I have been so delighted with this product that I may in future look to purchase more of the range -maybe for my next holiday. Highly recommended if you have dry coloured, chemically treated, hair that is prone to frizz or is difficult to manage. Yes it is costly but it lasts a long time making the cost per treatment within reason.
Summary: Well worth trying if your hair needs a bit of TLC
