Advantages: Delivers instant volume and texture to my hair
Disadvantages: It's quite expensive, although a little goes a long way
One of the other things that surprised me was just how light the bright red plastic bottle felt - almost as if it was empty. However, I found that by holding it up to the light I could see the level of powder within - it comes to the top of the label that is wrapped around the bottle. I thought at first that the price of this styling product - from about £10 - was very expensive. However, because so little is needed for each application, I think my bottle is going to last me for some time.
I finally managed to work out what the instructions said: 'Volume and texture powder. Shake before use, then sprinkle powder into the palm of your hands. Apply to dry hair through the lengths and ends, starting 1cm from the scalp. In case of contact with eyes, rinse them immediately.'
You should take some care the first time you use this product - I found that once I'd shaken the bottle and unscrewed the lid, the powder fizzed slightly and erupted quite quickly. However, this wasn't a problem on subsequent uses.
I am always pleased to find products that help add volume to my hair. Although each individual strand of my hair is thick, there are a lot less strands than there used to be, and I often find myself moulting and losing a few more. This bothers me, as my hair used to be so thick that a hairdresser in London once accused me of trying to blunt his scissors, and I miss what I used to consider my crowning glory. Having read the description of this powder, I was very keen to see just how well it added volume to my hair.
On checking the product on various websites, including L'Oreal's own, I saw that the powder is supposed to deliver a 'matte finish'. I like to keep my grey hair looking shiny, and apply Pantene's Pro-V Ice Shine Serum after using shampoo and conditioner. I did not notice any dulling of my hair after using this Super Dust, which came as something of a relief.
When I first tried the product, I was quite thrilled with the results - going so far as to rush into the next room to show my husband! I shook some of the fine white powder (about the size of a 5p coin) onto the palm of my hand. I rubbed my palms together, and then applied it to dry hair, working from the roots to the ends. I then ruffled my hair with my fingers to ensure a thorough coverage, and to smooth it into its usual style. On that first occasion, I experimented with the powder at a time when my hair was just about due for a wash, and I noticed that it seemed to absorb some of the hair's natural oil, rather like a dry shampoo. However, this was not a lasting effect. I had deliberately tried it then so that I could determine how my hair would feel when it came to shampooing. I did not notice any difference at all - no extra shampoo was needed to leave my hair feeling really clean.
I later tried it on clean hair, the day after I had washed and styled my hair. My style had gone a bit flat, and so I thought this would be a good opportunity to see whether the powder would restore the volume I wanted. It did, and once again I was delighted with the results.
If you want more volume in a particular area - with me it's always at the crown - you can gently sprinkle a bit of the powder directly onto your roots, taking care not to apply directly to your scalp.
I have found the volumising effect to be fairly long-lasting. Running my fingers though my hair the day after using the powder restores volume once again.
The bottle is about 10cm high, and 3cm in diameter. When I said it was small, I meant it! The bright red packaging reminds me of the colour of Superman's cape, and there is a strange and not at all feminine image on the front, which looks as if it's meant to represent one of those 'Zap!', 'Pow!' moments from the 1960s Batman tv series (showing my age here). The words 'SUPER DUST' are shown on a white oval, which also includes the words 'Volume Saviour Texturising Powder'. On first glance, this implies that L'Oreal are trying to promote this dust as having some sort of super power. Taking a look online, I found that this product is part of their Super Style Heroes range, and having used the powder for a while now, I would agree that it really is a hero - although in miniature form.
This product was new to me, although I have now seen that there seem to be quite a few of these hair volumising dusts around. I have also seen some mixed reviews, and all I can say is that my own experience has been extremely positive.
£10.00+ seems an almost ridiculous price for such a tiny bottle, but a little goes a long way, and this product really delivers. There are days when my hair is quite flat and I simply don't have the energy to style it. Applying a little bit of this wonder powder really perks it up. And if my hair is perked up, then so am I.
One of the joys of this powder for me is that when I use it, it restores style to my hair as well as volume. I have a brilliant hairdresser, and have my hair cut every four to six weeks to keep my short style in shape. So if I'm heading out and about, a quick application of L'Oreal's Super Dust means that I'm good to go - with no need to blow-dry my hair or put a few Velcro rollers into the crown while I'm doing my make-up.
L'Oreal Professionel's Tecni Art Super Dust is suitable for all hair types. It is made in England, the contents are good for twelve months after opening, and the bottle is recyclable. Prices range from about £10.00 to £14.95. I've found it online today (21st September) at feelunique.com for £10.70 with free delivery, and at Amazon for £10.35 plus £1.99 delivery (although I have recently seen it there at £9.84 with free delivery).
I love my new Super Dust, will definitely purchase it again, and am happy to give it five stars.
