Advantages: Stops hair getting frizzy
Disadvantages: Don't over-apply it or you'll end up greasy
So, back to my hair - crowning glory on a good day, bane of my life on a bad day, general all-consuming obsession on either. It's dry, dyed, frizzy, damaged and awkward, but with effort I make it behave and look smooth, feel soft and play nicely. Lee Stafford's Poker Straight Dehumidifier (what a mouthful!) is one of the weapons in my hair taming kit.
Those of you with normal person hair will probably not understand the need for a dehumidifier - it does sound like a particularly indulgent thing to use. I wouldn't go as far as to say that this is essential for my hair to look good, as I take very good care of my hair (honestly, I treat it like a pampered pet - if it were a dog I'd be cooking it steak every day), but in certain situations this stuff is a bit of a lifeline in my battle against the frizz.
As the name suggests, this product will help you to protect your hair from the effects of humidity. So if you are blessed with hair that remains staunchly un-frizzed in the face of a hot day, a steamy shower room or a bit of drizzle before you wrestle your umbrella up, then don't buy it. If you are anything like me, though, with hair that suddenly turns into a frizzy mullet when faced with something as seemingly inoffensive as being near a tumble drier, then I suggest you read on.
You will recognise the Lee Stafford range instantly because of its hot pink packaging. Look closer and you see that there is a cute white silhouette of a staffordshire bull terrier as part of the range's logo. This particular product comes in a hot pink metallic aerosol can with a clear pink plastic lid. I am not ashamed to admit that it was this packaging which initially attracted me to the range, and so to this product.
Really easy to use, simply dry and fully style your hair as usual (making sure it is completely bone dry), hold the can the requisite 30cm from your hair and spray all over. That's all you need to do.
I always use this immediately after washing and styling my hair - when I tried it on the second day of a wash before it did make my hair feel a little lank and greasy. When used immediately after a wash, though, I had no such problems. Be careful not to over-apply though. As with most anti-frizz products, using too much of this can make hair greasy.
I notice the difference in my hair texture immediately. From being very dry before application, it becomes shinier and sleeker as the product gets to work. I'm reluctant to say that it weighs the hair down, as that sounds negative, but it seems to give it a very light coat of product which acts as a barrier against the humidity you might encounter during the day. You know how your hair is less frizzy in day 2 of a wash (if you wash it every other day)? Well it makes your hair like that - it feels as if it's replacing some of the natural oils in the hair.
It smells fantastic. At the risk of sounding vague, it smells how you would expect something in a hot pink bottle to smell - fruity and sweet. It isn't overpowering, but it does leave your hair smelling nice all day - my boyfriend loves it.
I would recommend using this product when you would expect your hair to turn to frizz. I don't use it daily. I will give it a whirl most days in the summer, when I'm going clubbing, when it's drizzling or when I think I'm going to get sweaty (!). The good news (for Lee Stafford anyway) is that on the rare occasion I forget to use this for any of the above sitations, I get frizzy beyond belief. When I remember to use it, I don't see any frizz. It finishes off my styling perfectly and makes my hairstyle a lot longer lasting than it usually would be.
It's worth reiterating that this should be used after styling, not as a styling product. While it will calm down existing frizz to a certain extent, this product is a preventative measure. It works by protecting the style that you have carefully sculpted your hair into. If you want to combat frizz in the first place you'll need a cream or a serum - a spray like this isn't what you're looking for.
Please also note that this won't work if: you are caught in the rain; you get water thrown over you; you sweat so much in your sweat session that all of your hair becomes sodden. It is a dehumidifier, not a hairdyer.
This is the best product of its type I've used. It effectively stops my hair from getting frizzy in humid conditions and protects my style. I'd highly recommend it.
Summary: A barrier against frizz.
