Advantages: Vegan, easy to use, not too expensive and lots of great colours available.

Disadvantages: Hard to find on the high street, not very bright for dark hair and doesn't come with plastic gloves.

I decided to buy some Manic Panic hair dye because it's completely vegan - no animal ingredients and no animal testing (one of their slogans is "tested on celebrities, not animals!"). Plus they produce so many wild and funky colours which other hair dye companies don't even dare to think about!

I wanted some green streaks in my hair so I bought a tub of Green Envy, part of their classic cream formula semi-permanent hair dye. It cost £7.99 from an independent cosmetic store in my local town centre (Middlesbrough) which is about the average price. You can also buy it online from various alternative websites.

I have very long dark hair and the tub says that the colour works better on lighter hair but as I didn't want to bleach my hair I thought I'd give it a go anyway. If I was dying the whole of my hair instead of just streaks I'd probably have used two or three tubs.

The application was just as easy as any normal hair dye. Manic Panic doesn't come with gloves so you have to buy your own and I would definitely recommend using some as it can stain your skin quite easily. It didn't make my head itch or sting like some harsh dyes can, it didn't smell too bad and it didn't feel sticky.

I left it on for 45 minutes and the result was noticeable darker strands of hair with a slight hint of green but not as bright as I'd hoped it'd be. The colour only stayed on for 2 or 3 washes which was disappointing too but the colour didn't seem to rub off onto towels or pillows which is reassuring.

Summary: Great if you have light/bleached hair and want to try a bright colour for a week or so.
