Matrix Color Smart Protective Shampoo
by Gemma_C
I first heard about this shampoo on my last visit to the hairdressers. I remember after having my colour my hairdresser was washing my hair, and the shampoo smelt of coconuts. Afterwards I thought it was this Matrix Color Smart shampoo, but it must have been another one, as it doesn't smell of coconuts. I bought mine on Amazon.co.uk ... using my Amazon gift vouchers as a treat to myself.
Matrix hair care is one of those professional ranges you often see in salons, and are quite an expensive brand. Matrix was founded in 1980 by Arnie Miller, and has apparently grown to be the No1 professional hair care company in the USA. Their hair care range is available in over 300,000 salons and 50 countries around the globe, so it is a rather popular brand.
I bought the Color Smart shampoo as I always get a semi permanent colour on my hair, and so I thought this would help the colour last longer and be more vibrant. I paid £8.75 for 500ml on Amazon, although they sent me out 2 x 250ml bottles instead. It comes in a bright lilac coloured bottle with an easy to use flip lid. It's nicely designed, and has a big number 1 on the front. On the back it says how number 1 is shampoo, number 2 is conditioner, number 3 is styling.... well you get the hint, and it seems a waste for them to actually explain to people in what order they should wash and style their hair, because there's not many people out there who are going to wonder if they use conditioner first!
The Color.Smart Protective Luminating shampoo is supposed to strengthen, protect and reflect. It has a gentle formula with a citrus scent, and it states to clear away dulling residue to help reveal brighter colour and shine.
The shampoo itself is a clear, thick liquid with a faint citrus smell. I was disappointed as I did expect a more strong smell, the Matrix shampoo used on my hair in my hairdressers smelt lovely, so I did expect the same. The shampoo lathers up really well, not really any different from any other shampoo really, and it's easy to rinse out.
I expected excellent results from this shampoo, but the first time I used it was on evening before going out for the evening. After blow drying my hair, I became confused, as my hair felt slightly thick and heavy, as if I had left conditioner in my hair. It wasn't too bad, and certainly not noticeable, so I forgot all about it, until I next washed my hair using this shampoo. This time I could feel that same product build up on my scalp, and it felt awful. It's then I realised that it was probably down to this shampoo. Thankfully it wasn't too bad, so I could tie my hair up into a pony tail and you couldn't notice the awful greasy feeling my hair had. I was determined to make this shampoo work though, so I used it a third time. This time in the shower I really concentrated on rinsing my hair afterwards, massaging my scalp thoroughly with the water, and I used a small amount of conditioner on the very ends of my hair, nowhere near my scalp, so I could rule that out.
Did it work? Well no, this time it was even worse! It was so awful this time, but I was in a rush as it was before work, so again I tied my hair up and it was a bit noticeable this time, so all day I was extremely annoyed at my hair. I've now gone back to using other shampoos and it's taken another two thorough washes to get my hair feeling normal again. The product must have been building up in my hair, and not washing out at all, and it was an awful feeling! I have fine hair which is quite limp anyway, so throwing in that awful heavy and greasy feeling was disgusting.
To top it all off, I didn't notice any difference in my hair colour. I have to wash my hair everyday as I have very oily roots, and so my semi hair colour doesn't last as long as I would hope, and it still faded as much as usual using this 'Protective' shampoo! I find it really laughable that the bottle actually states that this shampoo will 'cleanse and clear away dulling residue to help reveal brighter colour and shine.' It doesn't actually cleanse and clear at all, as for dulling residue... it actually manages to add to that!
I urge everyone to stay well clear of this shampoo, as it's awful. It doesn't even clean your hair, instead it has major product build up which does not wash out of your hair. It didn't even really make any difference to my hair colour! I don't know how this brand is so popular with hairdressers, their other products must be better, and I know that as the shampoo my hairdresser uses on my hair does not have the effect that this one did on my hair. It's also expensive, and I'm annoyed enough that I wasted my Amazon vouchers on this shampoo, and I'm so very glad I didn't waste money on it. Read the complete review |

Matrix Curl.Life Defining System Contouring Milk
by xxfoxyredxx
recently a top hairdressers in my town (Coventry) have had a major sale on. Now I really like my hair products (see my past reviews to testify to that lol) but up until recently I've always had hairdressers try selling me stuff that I feel is over priced and always avoided it like the plague. I'm more the type of girl to go to Boots when ... I've just had my hair done and treat myself to some Toni&Guy, Angel Fish or Lee Stafford products or something like that and lets face it this stuff in Boots is usually on some sort of offer too and I love to get bargains so I do lol.
However as I say this hairdressers had a stand outside it's shop and I spotted this (usual price (£9.00) down to £2.00 so as I had heard of the brand of Matrix before I decided to give it a go!
The Packaging....
Long 150ml bright green tube with a lime green flip top lid to the bottom of it concealing a small hole. On the front in black writing I'm told it is Matrix Curl.Life Defining System, Contouring Milk (3) for normal hair and as I have stated already the size is listed. On the back of the tube I'm told a bit about the product and how to use it and then given that information in a variety of different languages), ingredients are listed, contact details for Matrix are given, the recycle symbol is shown and finally there is a bar-code on there. Nice enough, simple but professional bottle this is.
A Bit About The Product According To The Back Of The Tube....
Curl.Life Professional Defining System's technology combines moisture and control to define a consistent, frizz-free curl pattern. Curls are shiny, bouncy - 'Fit-For-Life. Curl.Life Contouring Milk, for normal to fine hair, defines as it boosts body and shiny. Provides lightweight moisture to lasting definition and frizz-control.
To Use It....
Rub between palms. Gently distribute product through towel-dried hair. Style as usual. Reapply for fresh definition.
Me Using It....
All you need of this slightly sticky avocado fresh smelling gloopy liquid is a very small amount indeed as a little goes a very long way as it is quite greasy in the hands. You do need to rub that gloopiness through your palms and then as directed gently tease you hair and spread it throughout.
Once on and when spread through the hair it does lose it's initial stickiness, drys rapidly and into the hair shaft and then you can either leave your hair to dry naturally if you have very curly hair but if like me you have some curl but the curls are not as tight as you would like them to be then it's a good idea after applying this to scrunch the hair and style it that way.
The thing about this product is that it defines what you have but gives no extra. After scrunching my hair it is left silky and the curls I possess are definitely more tidy and frizz free. This product is so lightweight it doesn't weigh hair down at all and really does deliver a nice gentle moisture boost all over giving a glossy appearance. It leave hair soft, manageable and very shiny but I do have one gripe about it...it's coming lol!
I hate the smell! The smell stays put as well and I hate this overly sweet sickly avocado smell more that I can say. I've tried using a really small amount through my hair but it still smells nasty as I'm using it and the only thing I can do is use other products after using this to disguise the smell which then means my hair isn't as natural as I would like it to appear.
Not a bad product but shame about the stink and for that reason I wouldn't buy but this again no matter the price! Read the complete review |

Matrix Sleek Look Smoothing Conditioner
by roses28
**** Introduction ****
This morning I was in the shower and thinking about what I could review today, so I decided to have a root around and I found this half full bottle of sleek look conditoner so I thought I would use it up and review it at the same time.
**** The Conditioner ****
This conditioner in ... made by an American firm matrix, I know very little about the company as it was a brand I had never heard of until I bought this on my last visit to the USA.
Anyway this conditioner was bought on impulse on holiday, it comes in a very appealing 200ml orange bottle that really stands out but the branding design on the front is a little bit bland, considering this is an up and coming brand in the UK.
The conditioner is designed to smooth and de frizz, unruly hair that can be difficult to straighten and keep smooth. This does actually help with the frizz but it really does not help keep my hair nice and straight.
The conditioner smells similar to Daz washing powder, so in my opinion it is not very nice at all but this does not linger on your hair after it has been applied so that is a problem I can personally get past.
Unlike many conditioners this is very thin and runny, so you do use excessive amounts at a time and the bottle will not last very long, for example I used it this morning and not word of a lie I used 1/4 of the bottle just to ensure my hair was fully covered.
This is expensive and will cost roughly £6.95 in the Uk, but it can be bought online at a much cheaper price.
**** My Views ****
I really did not like this conditioner it was so thin that it just slipped out of my hand when I was trying to apply it and I did waste a lot, so therefore I feel like it was a complete waste of money.
I did help the frizz and smooth my hair for a short period of time, bit it didn't last so I was not overly impressed as this did cost a bit and I could have got a better finish with a value range.
I personally would not recommend this as it nothing to tame my hair. Read the complete review |
