The best sulphate-free shampoo I've tried.

'Hair type' is one of the first things I wonder about when hearing people's experiences with hair products, to get an idea whether something would work for me - so in case you were wondering, my hair is very fine, normal but with a tendency to get oily, and pretty sensitive scalp. I often suffer from a flaky scalp which I'd always assumed was dandruff (I'm painting a nice picture here of my hair, aren't I!), and had tried lots of the typical anti-dandruff shampoos with no success (they just made my hair greasy). So, I ask quite a lot of my shampoo! I go through phases of getting all concerned about chemicals in my toiletries and seeking out 'natural' alternatives - then finding I don't like them, and then going back to my regular products. This has led me to try out several SLS-free shampoos - none of which I liked because of their almost total lack of lather and feeling that my hair wasn't completely clean after rinsing. In one of my efforts to be more ecological and use fewer chemicals I came across the website for Handmade Naturals, a small company in the UK producing natural skin care products and decided to give their shampoo a whirl. The lady who runs the company is very nice, extremely knowledgeable and answered my queries quickly. Likewise, the shampoo arrived quickly and well-packed. I've been very happy with this shampoo overall - and as far as I can tell, my scalp was flaky and itchy due to irritation caused by harsh shampoos because my flakiness is no more! A big plus in my view is that this shampoo DOES lather, but without sulphates which means that it's easier to use than other sulphate-free shampoos I've tried - at least with the hard-water we have here. According to the Handmade Naturals website, this formula uses coco glucoside as a detergent, "the mildest sugar detergent available". And another bonus is that it smells very good - a lemony, slightly coconutty, herbal smell which I find very pleasant. The only downside for me is that my hair still needs washing every other day due to oiliness, but you can't have everything in a shampoo can you?! And that's just the way my hair is so can't be blamed on this shampoo! And buying from a small business which uses fair-trade ingredients, recyclable packaging and whose products are cruelty-free... well, that can't be bad!
