Neutrogena Therapeutic T/Gel Shampoo

Neutrogena T/Gel Shampoo
I bought this a few months ago but I have been using it recently as my scalp has been really irritated by certain products and I have finally used up the bottle of this shampoo and it has been helping.
- Product description (from Superdrug)
"T/Gel® is a fragranced medicated ... shampoo, which should be used as often as needed or as recommended by your dermatologist or doctor for the treatment of itchy, flaky scalp disorders such as psoriasis and seborrhoeic dermatitis."
- About the product
I bought the 125ml bottle which is fairly small, most shampoo bottle contain 250ml. The bottle is clear and the shampoo itself is a brown colour, not really want I want in a shampoo. This product claims to be an effective treatment shampoo for Scalp Psoriasis, Seborrhoeic Dermatitis and Dandruff.
- Scent
The scent of this shampoo is just horrible! The scent is that of coal tar and that is really the only way to describe it. There has been no attempt by the manufacturer to reduce or mask the scent, as far as I know. Not only is the scent really horrible but it is strong and lingering too which is great if you like the scent but it is just disgusting, in my opinion. And the scent stays in my hair even when the shampoo has been washed out and my hair is dry!
- Using the product and results
I have used the bottle up now but when I used this product, I didn't use it every time I washed my hair as the scent is just horrible - and you don't get a lot of product in one bottle (even though it is the same price, or more, as a normal 250ml bottle of shampoo). The shampoo has a really thick consistency although it does lather really quite well. However as the shampoo lathers well, the scent does intensify which isn't pleasant. Once the shampoo lathers fully I do feel like it cleans my hair well. Rinsing this product out is a little bit more difficult and time consuming when compared to other shampoos I have used. When this product is rinsed out I can still smell the shampoo in my hair and even after a scented conditioner has been applied I can still smell the coal tar scent. Overall, I hate the scent but this product does lather well and it cleans my hair fairly well. Once my hair is dry I find that my scalp isn't as irritated as before and I do not experience any flakiness, dryness or irritation when I use this product - however it does really do anything apart from not irritating. This shampoo isn't detangling, smoothing or softening, in my opinion.
- Price and availability
I bought this shampoo a few months ago and it is now price at £4.15 for 125ml at superdrug. This product can also be found at: Tesco, Amazon, online pharmacies, eBay, Lloyds pharmacy and Boots. I find that this shampoo does what it says on the tin (mostly) but I still think it is overpriced for what it is.
Conclusions
Positives
- Easy to use
- Works well at reducing irritation/flakiness/dryness
- Lathers well
Negatives
- Price
- Scent is horrible and strong
- The scent lasts in my hair
- You don't get a lot of product for your money

Neutrogena T/Gel Shampoo
by lotbot88
For a few years now, after getting out of the shower my skin has felt tight and itchy, particularly on my back and legs. I have now changed my shower gel to a prescribed 'dermol, shower emolliant' but the eczema on my back was still bad.
I realised that this may be due to the shampoo I was using running off my hair when I wash ... it off, and irritating the eczema on my back. (It wasn't the shampoo's fault - I'd used various regular brands from herbal essences, to superdrug etc).
I spoke to my doctor about this and he said that tar based shampoos (that's what the t, in t/gel stands for) can be better for eczema suffers so I gave it a go. It has made a big difference and the eczema on my back is no where near as bad.
As a shampoo I find it is find. I have the one for greasy hair and don't use any conditioner and my hair feels great. I also like the smell, though I don't find it particularly strong once I'm out of the shower and dried my hair. Read the complete review |

Neutrogena Therapeutic T/Gel Shampoo

I was actually recommended this shampoo by my little girls doctor. I was concerned that my little girl still had quite a bit of cradle cap for two and a half but on closer inspection she said it was probably a bit of psoriasis. According to an article I read, "Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that effects skin. It is commonly seen ... as red and white scaly patches which appear on the first layer of the skin."
Instead of prescribing a harsh medicated shampoo the doctor said I could just pick up some of this shampoo from the shelf in Boots. I did clarify with her as the bottle says this is not for young children but as I was only instructed to use a little it did not matter.
Neutrogena T/Gel Therapeutic Shampoo is described as the most effective medicated shampoo available from T/Gel to treat itchy, flaky scalps. It is an effective treatment for Dandruff, Seborrhoeic Dermatitis and Scalp Psoriasis.
I was instructed to use a little of this shampoo every three or four days and shampoo normally as I would on my little girls hair. I only use a very tiny amount of shampoo on her hair and once I have applied it I tend to leave it on for a few minutes as best I can so it really gets a chance to work on her scalp. I can't always do this every time as she really hates her hair being washed and screams all the way through it as I think the psoriasis makes her head hurt but thankfully this shampoo has really been working to take the flakes away. It has been a bit of a slow process as we've been using this shampoo for a few months now but I gave really noticed the patches getting smaller and some have gone completely thankfully.
If you were to follow the instructions on the bottle it says that, "NeutrogenaT/Gel Therapeutic Shampoo is a fragranced medicated shampoo, which should be used as often as needed or as recommended by your dermatologist or doctor, for the treatment of itchy, flaky scalp disorders such as dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis and scalp psoriasis. Regular use helps control these problems, while leaving your hair shiny and manageable."
The smell is not a very pleasant one, it's got a very heavy medicated smell and is quite off-putting, not something you would really want to wash your hair in but we can over look that as its working. The shampoo is a bit different from other shampoos too as its got a very thick, tar like consistency and doesn't lather up very well but I'm sure this is to do with its healing properties.
If you can over look the smell and the price, a 200 ml bottle costs £6.99 then I do recommend this medicated shampoo as it works for us! Read the complete review |
