Advantages: The conditioner smells gorgeous!
Disadvantages: Too runny and the comb isn't that great, messy and stains skin
Nice 'n Easy introduced their Perfect 10 range of hair dye at the same time as L'Oreal brought out their Excell 10 range. Both claimed to give busy women gorgeous dyed hair in just 10 minutes!
I first tried the L'Oreal Excell 10 back in March and I thought it was fantastic and I vowed not to use a different brand again. But when I went to buy it in Asda, they didn't have the colour I wanted on special offer, so I opted to try the Nice 'n Easy Perfect 10 as all the colours were on special offer (£5 instead of £6.98).
Would I regret trying a new hair dye for the sake of saving a few quid?
<<< Picking the shade >>>
-------------------------------------------------
I picked the number 4 Dark Brown colour, which is described on the box as an 'espresso dark brown' and most suitable for use on light brown to black hair. My natural hair colour is black, but I suffer from a streak of white hair and with a family photoshoot approaching I wanted to look my very best.
<<< Preparation >>>
-------------------------------------------------
I am very cautious when it comes to using hair dye and I always do the skin allergy/sensitivity test. With this hair dye the test must be performed 48 hours before you colour your hair, which is a bit of a pain if you want to spontaneously dye your hair.
I had no adverse reaction so I went ahead with the colouring process. I always apply some Vaseline around my hairline, on my ears and around my neck because hair dye can be a nightmare to remove from your skin!
Application >>>
-------------------------------------------------
Although the Perfect 10 kit looked almost identical to the Excell 10 one, with the comb applicator for all over coverage and the precision applicator for root application, I was a little bit dubious about using it as I had read mixed reviews.
Mixing the 2 parts of the dye wasn't as easy as most other dyes I've tried, as there wasn't the handy slot in the box where you can stand the Colour Activating Crème bottle, so you have both hands free to squirt the tube of High Gloss Colour Crème into it. But I did manage to successfully mix the colour and I attached the comb applicator, as I wanted all over colour.
You have to use this dye on dry hair, which I prefer as there tends to be less drips and mess. But I found this hair dye very difficult to work with and control. It didn't seem to come out of the comb applicator at a very good rate, unlike the Excell 10 one which flowed really nicely and I could get great coverage. As a result, I had to squeeze the bottle quite hard and quite a bit shot out and landed on the floor and onto my bare back (don't ask me why I thought it was a good idea to dye my hair butt naked!).
I really didn't like the consistency of the dye as it was a bit too runny and I found it very messy. It also seemed like there wasn't enough in the bottle for my shoulder length hair (maybe because so much ended up on the floor/on my skin?), so if you have really long hair then 1 pack probably won't be enough. Even though I wiped the dye off my skin straight away, I found that it did stain quite badly, so quite a bit of scrubbing in the shower ensued!
I left the dye on for exactly 10 minutes as instructed and then rinsed my hair until the water ran clear. Then I applied the ColourSeal Intensive Conditioning Crème and left it on for 2 minutes to condition my hair. I thought that the Conditioning Crème smelt absolutely wonderful and I was pleased that the instructions said there was enough to be used once a week for the next 6 weeks. However, when I rinsed off the conditioner I thought that my hair felt really coarse and dry, so I was quite worried that my hair was wrecked by the dye.
<<< The results >>>
-------------------------------------------------
When my hair was dry it did feel soft and manageable and I was pleased with the colour, as it had removed all the white hairs and there were nice tones to the colour in the light, rather than being just one flat colour. Although the dye did stain the skin on my back and shoulders, I was surprised that it didn't stain my scalp with which it had contact for a full 10 minutes!
I am pleased with the result I got from using this hair dye, but I just found it too messy and I will definitely go back to using the Excell 10 dye as it's so much easier and I get the same results!
On the Boots website it is available in 17 shades and is currently priced at £4.84 (usual price £6.84).
Summary: I'll stick with Excell 10
