Organic Surge are a relative newcomer onto the cosmetics and toiletries market, and one I became attracted to because they are made with the minimum amount of chemicals possible to achieve a good and useful product.

What I particularly like is the fact that they are especially keen on not using parabens, because they have had some bad press recently, especially in their possible link with reproductive cancers, as their chemical action mimics the female hormone oestrogen.
I don't think this is possibly as worrying when using shampoos, as these are rinsed off, but certainly products such as body creams which are absorbed more fully into the skin layers may be more cause for concern.

The other thing I really love about this company is their ethical beliefs and the way they are using some of their profits to help put back something into the societies so integral in the production of many of our much loved crops. They even make "Happy Soap" which is a project in which workers who live in the foothills of Mount Kenya actually make soap, and no profit at all is ploughed back into the company. It is purely to help an economically challenged area. They concentrate their work on helping children, especially those affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and even send their own workers out to areas to help with projects.

I actually decided to purchase some of the grapefruit shampoo because I thought it sounded really fresh. and I also bought the matching hair treatment which I have already reviewed.

A few years ago The Body Shop used to make a grapefruit shampoo which smelt identical to this, and if anyone was faithful to that they might appreciate its revival, all be it in a different format, from a different company, but the fragrance is almost indistinguishable.

Marketed for normal to dry hair this shampoo is becoming more widely available every day. I actually purchased mine online, but it is now for sale in Holland and Barrett. It is also possibly becoming available in major supermarkets as they are now stocking many of their products. Online it was £4.88 for 250mls which is actually a lot more than I would normally pay for a shampoo, but having tried some of their other products I wanted to support them, and see if maybe this had more to offer than my normal shampoo which is nearly always Aussie.

The website says"For happy-ever-after hair ... fresh grapefruit shampoo gently cleanses and nourishes your hair while our organic essential oil fragrance transports you to a meadow bursting with aromatic fruits." It has never been tested on animals and is pure and simple and 100% organic.

The bottle is attractive showing the glossy leaves of a citrus and is a tall easy to handle shape.

I soaked my hair and applied the shampoo which immediately hit me with a wonderful citrus aroma, which was very pleasant and was astringent in the extreme. More like gel than a cream shampoo this was a surprise to me as it is definitely recommended for normal to dry hair and this immediately made me think it would be perfect for greasy hair types. It certainly lathered up well and it did smell like half a grapefruit which had just been cut open.

The problem was though that it was very difficult to comb through afterwards even when I followed it with the mask. On the occasions I have used this on its own without a conditioner it is a disaster for my hair. I have coloured hair which is highlighted, and I also use my GHD straighteners each morning, so this was too much of a challenge, and I ended up smothering it in a Wella leave in mousse to put the oils back into it.

I really think this shampoo is meant for greasy hair because it would be perfect for that. For anyone with normal or especially dry or coloured hair it is a disaster. It has gone in our house to the place where shampoos go to die-the teenage bathroom where hopefully my son will use it up for me to save waste. If you have normal hair which has a slight tendency to be greasy or maybe you have left it a few days between washes then it will be fine. The thing to avoid is daily use in anything but this category as it results in oil stripping and hair which is so squeaky clean you can't do a thing with it.

There is nothing wrong with the company, who are second to none, or the product,- just the hair type it is directed at. For this reason I have given it 3* but I feel any more than that would not be assessing the product fairly, and would encourage a buyer with the wrong hair type to part with hard earned cash.
