My scalp feels often irritated, itchy and uncomfortable and for a long time I had no idea what to do to change that. Some time ago, I was browsing online for some haircare products and found this exfoliating scalp mask. My first thoughts were "Exfoliator? How would I remove the microbeads from my hair afterwards?".
Also, I previously used a product from this brand and was a bit disappointed. But me being me, the curiosity won and I decided to give this product a try. In the end, it cost only £3.70 for a small tube of 30ml so I wouldn't lose much if the product didn't work.
I researched the company on their website and found out they have more than 50 years of Trichological and clinical experience and that they regard themselves a medical company much more than cosmetic company.
---- The product ----
The scalp mask is an intensive treatment that exfoliates the scalp and removes dead skin cells to relieve itching, flaking and to stimulate growth of healthy hair. It does't have any microbeads in, so no need to worry about removing them from your hair. The product looks and feels like cream and the active ingrediets give it it's exfoliating properties.
I placed the order with feelunique.com (Philip Kingsley also sell this through their website www.philipkingsley.com) and received a small package in a few days.
The product is packed in a cardboard box, inside of which there is a tube with the product. The packaging is very simplistic.
The mask is white in colour and has a thick consistency, but it can be easily squeezed out through the tube nozzle and applied precisely wherever it needs to go.
The product is non-fragranced and has a typical chemical smell of non-perfumed cosmetics. The smell is not unpleasant, rather neutral, but it is distinguishable during application. The smell vanishes after hair is washed with a shampoo, so no need to worry about this.
---- Application and effects ----
The directions for use are to dampen hair and apply mask directly to the scalp in 3cm sections. Massage gently, then cover with a plastic cap and leave for 10-20 minutes. Finally rinse, wash hair with a Philip Kingsley shampoo, conditioner and scalp toner. There is also warning on the packaging that you might experience a tingling sensation but this is a normal effect of the mask.
I applied the product as per instructions on dampened hair. Basically, I put my hands under running water, then stroke the hair with my wet fingers until damp, but without water dripping down.
There wasn't any tingling or itching sensation during the first use and my scalp was still slightly irritated, but I was suffering from dandruff back then and it disappeared after just one use of the mask. I haven't used any other products from this brand, just my usual shampoo and conditioner.
I waited two days and applied again. This time I applied more mask on my hair and dampened it more. There was some tingling during the use. After second use, there was no itching until next wash. After the third application, my scalp stopped itching at all and felt normal again. I also noticed that my hair started to be more bouncy and felt slightly thicker and stronger.
Philip Kingsley advise that the mask is used initially at least once a week and then whenever required. I used it twice a week for the first 2 weeks and then once a week. There was enough of the product for 6 applications, which I think is a good value considering both the price and tube size.
After all contents of the tube had gone, I decided to wait and see how long the effects would last without using the product. After 4 weeks my scalp went back to its itchy state, so I have purchased two tubes this time (just to have one spare).
I definitely recommend this product. Not only it removes dead cells and refreshes scalp, but it also conditions the scalp, making your hair feel and look better too.

This scalp mask is suitable for coloured hair.

Also, there is menthol in the ingredients list but this must be a tiny amount as the product doesn't feel cool on the scalp nor does it smell of menthol at all.
