Advantages: Works

Disadvantages: Smell and leaves hair dried out

My Step-Father is almost bald. Not quite he does have some hair which he is rather proud of but the top of his head gets really dry and flaky so he uses this loads. He's now this about 5 years now and it's the only thing that keeps him flake free!

So the other day when I noticed a few white flaky bits in my hair I panicked terribly. It looks awful against jet black hair! I know it's all down to the heat and sitting in the sunshine in my case as it happens to me occasionally in the summer months. So as I say I was rather panicked and felt like shaving my hair off till I went to the bathroom and noticed this stuff and decided to give it a go or back to Plan B (shaving it off lol).

The Packaging...

This particular formula comes in 500ml and 250ml sizes priced at about £6.76 for the larger size and is about £3.43 for the smaller. I mention formulations due to this also being available in emollient and Plus Shampoo types as well.

So the bottle we own is a browny/bronze colour and slightly curved to the middle of it for ease of handling. There is a white plastic cap/lid to the top of it which screws on and off concealing a largish hole. On the front of the bottle I'm told it Stiefel Polytar Scalp Treatment that is for itchy flaking scalps, eczema, seborrhoea, psoriasis ad problem dandruff and that it helps to clear the scalp, soothe irritation and relive itching. On the back of the bottle directions for use and ingredients are listed, a warning is given, contact details for Stiefel are given (the manufacturer of the product), size is stated, the expiry date is also there and finally there is a bar-code displayed. This simply looks like a treatment bottle rather than being cosmetic and attractive but it contains all the information you need on it to see if you think it is suitable for you to use or not.

Directions For Use....

Wet hair. Apply enough Polytar Liquid to produce an abundant lather while massaging into the scalp and adjacent areas. Rinse and repeat. Use one or twice weekly, or as recommended by your pharmacist. If symptoms persist consult your doctor.

Me Using It....

Well I wet my hair thoroughly and rubbed in a good dollop of this of the solution. Talk about stinky! This is a blend of pine tar, cade oil, coal tar solution, arachis oil and an extract of coal tar (along with other ingredients of course) but in the main this browny/amber coloured runny liquid smells coal tar bound to me and is not that nice!

I found I needed rather alot to get any white lather, which eventually I did. I massaged it into my hair really well for over a minute and then rinsed it out and repeated the process. Rinsing it out wasn't very easy as my hair went knotty and straw like to the touch and once I had removed all of the product my hair was as dry as a bone ad worse than that conditioner isn't advised so once done I had to work really hard at combing through my now 'squeaky' clean and bristly hair....

However....

Ok I hate the smell and that smell does linger until washed out. I'm not keen on the fact that after using it my hair feels so unhealthily dry but saying that once combed through and styled it is fine and you can't feel the product in the hair (only smell it!). However this really works! Forget all the negatives with this if you need a treatment for all of the above problems I listed already this really is superb. It cured my dandruff so that the next day I could use ordinary shampoo and conditioner and stuff and it gave me back my confidence and will to live! Without this stuff my poor Step-Dad would look like he was living in a permanent snow storm too! Before using this he'd sit on the sofa watching the tv, get up to go loo or something and leave so much unsightly skin behind him me Mum used to threaten to get the vacuum out! Not now though it's gone and gone for good by the looks of things.

Sure I wish it smelt a wee bit nicer but as I've tried to stress already this is a treatment and not an every-day shampoo so don't let that put you off! Use it for issues and only and then you don't need to worry about going out stinking, just use it when you not etc.

I really this for occasional use and like I say it got rid of my issues!

Available in all good supermarkets and chemists.

Summary: Works so well!

I've used this for years thanks to eczema on my scalp, I think it smells lovely though!
