Sainsbury's Basics Hair Conditioner
Advantages: It works as well as the premium brands I was using before, great on children's hair, cheap
Disadvantages: the bottle
My long hair is quite thick. coarse and wavy and after lots of experimentation I realised I need to use an awful lot of conditioner to make it manageable and have a good hair day. If I use conditioner every day I can easily get through an ordinary bottle in ten (ish) days so I limit it to twice a week and put up with the resulting crazy hair the rest of the week. I am always on the look out for cheaper conditioners and when I spotted this one in Sainsburys for 25p I thought it was probably worth a try at the price.
The 500ml plastic bottle is basic with a screw top lid and is filled with a peach coloured conditioner. The lid is hard to open with wet hands and the whole thing can get very slippery after a few uses as conditioner builds up on the label of the bottle. Once opened the conditioner flows out very fast and you have to be quite on the ball to get the amount that you want. I wasted about a quarter of the first bottle I bought as it went straight out of my hands and down the plughole. Luckily at just 25p a bottle those sort of accidents are not particularly irritating! I have also dropped the bottle on my foot once or twice as it slipped out of my hands, so now I open the bottle with dry hands and leave it on the side ready to be used later.
The consistency of the conditioner is much more liquid than my usual premium brand, it spreads itself much more easily on the hair and works in much faster-especially getting it right to the tips of the hair. It has a very light chemical smell, it certainly isn't a natural smell but it isn't unpleasant and it doesn't linger in the bathroom or on my wet/dry hair. The ingredients on the label are the usual list of scary sounding chemicals and there is only one there I would prefer not to use on my daughter's hair (Methyl Paraben) but it actually has fewer 'nasty' ingredients than some of the other shampoos and conditioners that I use.
For those who are interested or who care about these things, the conditioner contains:
Aqua, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Parfum, Paraffinum Liquidum, PEG-30 Lanolin, CitricAcid, Triethylene Glycol, Benzyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, BHT, Magnesium Chloride, Magnesium Nitrate, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, p-Chloro-m-Cresol, Methylisothiazolinone, Prunus Persica, Methylparaben, CI 15985, CI 16035.
I have been using this conditioner every day for several weeks and I must say I am very impressed with the results. My hair is shiny and manageable and I have much fewer bad hair days. Even though I am using this conditioner everyday I have not seen any change in performance as I have seen with more premium brands-I usually have to use a different brand every second or third wash but this conditioner seems to be doing the job. One real area that has impressed me though is on my daughter's hair. She has not only inherited the negative characteristics of my hair, but also the tighter ringlety curls of my husband (before he lost it all!). Hairwashing and brushing is a constant battle and usually ends up with us both upset and with her in floods of tears. With her starting school in January I wanted to sort this problem out so that when we are rushing in the mornings this hairbrushing saga doesn't add to our stress. This conditioner worked fantastically, washing out of her hair really quickly with a couple of jugs of water so that opportunities for it to get in her eyes were very limited. I brushed it quickly before bed but didn't have time to dry it so she went to bed with it wet. This morning her hair was not the usual matted tangled mess, but wonderfully soft and silky. All the usual very matted parts were brushed out with fewer tears than usual and despite the fact it dried when she was asleep it took only a few strokes to de tangle. For the first time in months I managed to get her hair into a pony tail and I didn't even have to use the spray in conditioner than I usually have to use just to get the brush through her hair. I was not looking forward to having to do the conditioner and Nitty Gitty comb for the inevitable nits that come with school, but now I know that with this conditioner screaming will be greatly reduced.
So overall I think this is a great value product. I will not be going back to the brands I was using previously and will be saving myself about £10 a month. I am most impressed with this product and delighted that I have found something that will make my daughter happier in the long run.
