Sainsbury's Basics Hair Conditioner
Advantages: really cheap, works well, will last for ages
Disadvantages: none for the purpose I bought it for (shaving my legs)
I've bought and tried out many items after reading a review either here on Dooyoo or over on Ciao. I remember reading a review where someone (sorry I can't remember who it was!) had recommended one of the supermarket's own 'basics or value' conditioners for shaving their legs. I'm a sucker for trying out different things and different ideas so I decided to give it a go. I figured that as the 'basics or value' ranges are so cheap then it really wouldn't hurt to try it out as the conditioner would be so cheap.
I'm sure that the review I read was on the Tesco Everyday Value Conditioner, however as I was shopping in Sainsbury's at the time I bought the Sainsbury's Basics Conditioner. This was the absolute bargain price of just 24pence for a massive 500ml bottle. I'd expected it to be cheap, but this was basically nothing at all, so even it if didn't work out it was essentially just change that I might just lose down the side of the sofa anyway!
The Basics Conditioner is in the typical 'basics' no frills packaging, and it states on the bottle ''lighter fragrance, still tackles tangles''. The bottle is quite large as it is 500ml, and so when it's full it is a little bit difficult to handle in the shower with wet soapy hands. The bottle is see through so that you see how much conditioner you have left, and the conditioner itself has the consistency of a very watered down and liquid conditioner. The conditioner is a pleasant peachy orange colour, and it just has a very subtle and light fragrance, it doesn't seem to smell of anything in particular, it just has a very subtle and light 'clean' scent.
I do normally prefer to use shaving foam or gel as I find that this gives me a smoother shave, and doesn't dry out my legs as much as just using shower gel can. I was hoping that the Basics conditioner might be a happy medium between the two, as I seem to spend a fortune on shaving foams and gels, and I seem to get through them really quickly, so if the Basics Conditioner worked then I'd be saving a fortune.
I'm happy to report that this actually works a treat! I'm actually really impressed with this for shaving my legs. It seems to soften the stubbly hairs on my legs and enables me to get a slightly closer shave then I would just using shower gel. I don't think that it works quite as well as shaving foam or gel, but for just 24pence I'll be sticking with this. It also doesn't dry my legs out either like I can sometimes experience with shower gels. I really like that it doesn't have much of a fragrance as this means that it doesn't clash with my shower gel and body lotion. The conditioner also works well when shaving under my arms, it doesn't irritate or sting at all.
It took me a few attempts to get the hang of using this as it is so watery and runny, and I've found that it actually works much better with a much smaller amount than you would think that you would need. If I use too much then it just runs down and off my legs, and it can clog the blades on my razor. Because I only use a small amount of this it will last me absolutely ages, making it absolutely brilliant value for money. I'm definitely going to continue to buy this as for the price (for shaving my legs) I really can't fault it.
I can't comment on how well this works as a conditioner as I haven't tried it, I bought it specifically for shaving my legs and I'm more than happy with the results that it gives for this, so for me that's all that matters really. I'd definitely recommend that people try this, as even if it doesn't work for you then it's only 24pence lost, but if it does work then it's a fortune saved! It may even make a good conditioner too.
