“ Brand: Sainsbury's / Type: 2 in 1 Shampoo „
After having successful experiences with the Sainsburys Kids Strawberry and Cherry Almond 2 in 1 Shampoos, we thought we'd give the Melon Kids Shampoo a try.
The shampoo comes in a bright green bottle with a lighter green lid. On the front of the bottle is a 5-eyed alien with the phrase 'Smells out of this world' above it - very visually pleasing to little ones.
The back of the bottle states that it has a 'mild and gentle formula specially developed for your little monsters!'. It claims to 'clean and de-tangle in one easy step' and 'leaves hair feeling soft, shiny and smelling Melon-tastic!'.
The shampoo itself is a green colour and has a very runny consistency which is fine for me to use but I have to assist my daughter when she insists on washing her own hair, otherwise she usually squeezes out way too much. The 250ml bottle is kind of short and chubby which looks good but is also easy for little ones to get their hands around. The lid is easy to open but very secure when closed (I've lost count of the amount of times it's fallen in to the bath!).
The shampoo smells nice, but I would say it smells more like apple than melon. You may be in for a disappointment if you buy this shampoo solely for the melon scent. It's very sweet and pleasant in my opinion. It's a real hit with my daughter who regularly lifts up the lid to give it a good sniff and usually gives an 'Mmmm!' when rubbing it in to her hair.
My daughter currently has shoulder length hair which is quite thin but gets tangled quite easily.
The shampoo lathers up well and creates lots of bubbles - this has it's upside and downsides. The upsides are that is covers the whole head (a little bit goes a long way) and allows my daughter to make different 'hairstyles' with her hair. The downsides are that it takes a few rinses to get rid of all the bubbles. The bubbles usually end up running down her face when I rinse her hair and although she doesn't really like it, she doesn't complain about her eyes hurting or stinging which means Sainsbury's have fulfilled their 'kind to eyes' promise.
I like the fact this product is a shampoo and conditioner in one, as my daughter isn't keen on washing her hair as it is - she would go mad if she had to wash it twice! I usually towel dry her hair but I sometimes dry it with the hairdryer. I comb her hair after she's washed it - the comb generally slides straight through her hair but I do get stuck on the odd tangle here and there, so I can't really say that the detangling formula is very effective. I have used better detangling products, but I've also used worse...
After drying her hair always looks (and feels) soft and shiny, like the product claims to do. She has straight hair which tends to go out of control when it's unclean - after washing her hair is beautifully straight but with plenty of volume (not flattened to her head). It also smells fresh and fruity (or 'melon-tastic') - the smell isn't very long lasting though, it fades within a day.
The back of the bottle informs me that Sainsbury do not test on animals and fund research into alternatives, which is good to know. The bottle can also be recycled.
The ingredients of this shampoo might as well be written in Chinese! I don't recognise many of the ingredients but I don't see anything natural in it, which is a shame. I would love to find a childrens shampoo that was packed full of natural good stuff...
The Melon shampoo doesn't seem to work differently to the Strawberry or Cherry Almond version. The only obvious difference is the smell. Cherry Almond is probably my most favourite scent out of the three, but Strawberry and Melon are as equally delicious.
Sainsbury's Kids Melon 2 in 1 Shampoo currently costs £1.10 which I feel is a good price and is significantly cheaper than leading brands such as L'Oreal Kids Shampoo (£1.99). We have been using the same bottle of Sainsbury's Melon Shampoo for the past month or so and still have plenty left in the bottle, so I am happy to say it's good value for money too.
Melon 2 in 1 shampoo
With Little Miss now giving it a go to wash her own hair, it has become ever more important to buy products which are kind to eyes and potentially take less rinsing out than many of the adult shampoos. We bought this at Sainsburys and at a cost of 64p for 250ml of the stuff, I decided that it would be good value as I am usually pleased with the Sainsburys products. It is advertised as being kind to eyes and dtangling so this seems to be just what we need.
The product comes in a green plastic bottle featuring an alien on the front, the relevance being that this "smells out of this world". The lid is a flip up lid which is pressed back down after use and once the lid is open the shampoo is dispensed through a hole large enough to get a good "helping" of the stuff but not so big that it all comes out in a rush.
When we give the bottle a little squeeze out comes the shampoo, and yes it does smell really fruity and very like fresh melon. It is quite thick and creamy so when Little Miss puts some onto her hand ready for hair application it stays there till she puts it on her hair and doesn't all slide off her hand. It works easily into a nice lather and after being massaged into her hair and scalp the product is quickly and easily rinsed out leaving her hair "squeaky" clean. There is no need for conditioner after using this product so I feel we are not over loading her hair with hair products and making it more likely that the products won't be rinsed out fully.
After washing and rinsing hair, we usually spray on a detangler to make hair brushing less of a chore, but after using this product, I find that detangler isn't a necessity because her hair does seem to detangle more easily.
WHAT DO WE THINK OF IT?
The shampoo smells good, and leaves hair smelling and looking clean and soft. It is easy to use, reasonably priced and rinses out easily. The one problem I have with it is that although it states that no conditioner is necessary, I don't feel that it conditions her hair, and frequent use with this can leave the ends of her hair looking quite straw like. We tend to use this only when she wants to wash her hair herself or after swimming to remove the chlorine; for a real wash and conditioner we still tend to get out the conventional and separate shampoos and conditioners.

Anyone who regularly reads my reviews will know I have a love of using children's products. I love kids fragrances of things and I do particularly like to use mild and gentle formulations on my hair particularly when I haven't been using loads of tacky hair products!
Bright green 150ml plastic bottle with a yellow flip top lid to the top of it concealing a small hole. On the front I'm told what it is and who it is by and there is an odd yellow cartoon character on the front that I can't decide what it is! On the back of the bottle directions for use are given, ingredients and warnings are listed, contact details for Sainsbury's are given and finally there is a bar-code on there. Nice enough child appealing and friendly product this is and it's a good quality bottle priced at only 52p as well!
Very, very runny dark green liquid that not only looked like washing up liquid we use in my house but it had a very odd smell to it too. Yes light and slightly smelling of melon I simply wasn't keen from the off.
I drenched my hair with water, splatted a little of this on and found it really struggled to lather up on the first application and simply felt a little slimy. Adding water to it I finally did get the froth going on and was able to wash my hair adequately but the flipping smell it gave off as I went started to make me feel a little on the sickly side for real.
Because I wasn't happy with the results I'd achieved with the first wash, I rinsed my hair thoroughly and re-applied yet more shampoo. This time for some reason it did lather up easily and I found it alot easier to wash my hair with.
It rinsed out with ease, didn't upset my sensitive eyes and once I dried off my hair, hair was left gently fragranced and with no knots and even before drying it my hair looked strong and healthy.
I styled my hair as normal and my hair felt clean and refreshed in a gentle way. The smell thankfully vanished after about an hour and my hair was left feeling smooth, bouncy and full of life. It even had a pleasant soft shine to it and all round I was happy with the results.
Doesn't look too appealing in colour. Isn't the easiest shampoo to get foaming and it stinks rather horrible. All reasons I wouldn't buy this particular shampoo again. However the results on my hair were really good but saying that there are better fragrances in this range that offer great results too so I'd opt for them instead every time over this option!
A reasonably economical product to use this is and it works well at cleansing the hair and leaving it in a smooth, hydrated (though not overly so) condition and what is nice about this is that if your in a hurry you don't have/need to use a separate conditioner as it contains it and it works really well!
Not great, not bad, I'm indifferent to this really! lol.
Only available in Sainsbury's.
As with most people I am looking to cut back on my spending and looking at the store's own alternatives of the more expensive brands.
When I am at the gym I like to use L'oreal kids 2-in-1 shampoo a couple of times to clean the sweat before I use my regular shampoo. My regular shampoo is an expensive premium brand so using this one helps me save on the expensive shampoo.
This time round I was looking for an even cheaper alternative and whilst browsing the aisles at Sainsbury's I came across their version of kids 2-in-1, so I decided to give it a go at 57p compared to £1.92 for L'oreal kids.
~~~ THE PACKAGING ~~~
The product comes in a bright green bottle which is oval shaped, almost flat with a slight curve from right to left. As you would expect of a children's product it is eye-catching and loud and wouldn't go unnoticed on the bathroom shelf.
The bottle is a flip-top and this flip top is a neon yellow and alongside the green looks psychedelic. On the front of the bottle is a label with a picture of a multi-eyed alien. You know the kind with eyes at the end of tentacles???? The following claims are also on the label:
"Smells Out of This World"
"Kind to Eyes"
On the back of the bottle is another label with the same claims as the front but also says it "leaves hair feeling soft shiny and smelling fruitastic".
There are also the directions which if you wash your hair is pretty much the same and not worth mentioning here. This product is available in 250ml size.
~~~ THE PRODUCT ~~~
So, in the shower cubicle at the gym, I soaked my hair in water and poured some shampoo. It has a consistency like handwash and is not too runny. So I rubbed my hands together in a bid too lather and this was the first disappointment. It hardly lathered at all, so I thought I might not have enough and proceeded to use more. It lathered a bit more but not greatly, so I decided to apply it to my hair.
The second disappointment: This product did not glide into my hair at all. while I was shampooing into my hair it felt like the product was dragging along my hair and to an extent pulling the hair. If you imagine glue would not slide in the hair it was like that. I also could not lather up into my hair.
The second time I washed my hair I decided to lather up before it hit my hair and whilst the product lathered in my hands, it did not in my hair. Equally, when I rinsed the product out of my hair, the water didn't run easily through my hair and my hair felt squeaky clean, too squeaky clean and it is not a nice feeling.
After rinsing I tried to run my hand through my hair and my hair felt really coarse and I could not get my hand through without it dragging and rubbing, also it was still quite tangly and rough.
To try and calm my hair I used my rich shampoo which helped a bit but I think the damage was done and I couldn't get the shampoo through my hair as easily as when I use l'oreal kids. Once I'd used my extra rich conditioner my hair felt much better and less shocked.
A strange thing with this product is that I bought the Melon smell and on a positive note the smell of the product is quite strong. However, I would have placed the smell more apple than melon (unless my senses have left me!) but I liked it, so it did not bother me. I didn't notice the smell in my hair after it was rinsed, but that could be 2 things:
 the smell is not strong
 I didn't leave it long enough
Oh, one other thing. Now before you think I'm weird, I don't drink shampoo, but when I am rinsing my hair I go straight under the shower and to keep breathing I need to open my mouth. Occasionally you can get run-off and taste the shampoo. Now, when this happened with this product, the first thing I noticed was it tasted so bitter, unpleasantly bitter that I had to rinse my mouth out a few times. I never get that with any other product I use, so it is indeed quite strange and off-putting.
~~~ CONCLUSION ~~~
After drying my hair, there is no doubt my hair felt squeaky clean, but as this is a harsh product on the hair that I would not use it again. The product is not rich enough and very abrasive, so I will have to give this a definite thumbs down.
Also, it did not live up to any of its claims. My hair was neither soft nor shiny although the smells was strong and pleasant. I didn't find my hair de-tangled either, but it didn't hurt my eyes, so a good one for kids.
I'm grateful it was only 57p and compared to l'oreal kids it is not something you can save on. No, I won't be buying this again. Only 1 star from me. The search continues...
