Advantages: Works to hold style

Disadvantages: Smells like glue, makes hair hard to manage and break easily

I bought Schwarzkopf Heat Protection Straightening Spray as my hair was beginning to get damaged from styling and needed protection from the high temperatures. I bought the Strong Hold one as I always find that straight the result doesn’t last and my hair although straight will just go back to normal – same if I curl my hair so I hoped that in either situation the style would hold. The spray costs between £2.99 and £3.99 but I haven’t seen it in some of the main shops.

This may be a clear liquid but once sprayed it comes out a little foamy – the bits that don’t land on my hair look like little snow flakes but it doesn’t foam up on the hair. This liquid does act like a hair spray though and doesn’t feel nice on my hair once it’s dried. I can barely run my hand through my hair. I was surprised at the smell as I thought it may have had a scent nicer than it does as it smells a little like PVA glue. Having said that though, it’s not a smell that lingers too long or would over power the scent of shampoo/conditioner.

The pump spray although it may look quite fancy is a little useless as it is very concentrated so while one spray releases a good amount of liquid it all ends up in one spot. Brushing through doesn’t really do much so it can often take quite a bit to cover the desired areas. In this case I’d rather the product have been a less concentrated spray or mousse that foamed up in my hand to then be applied. It doesn’t take too long to dry though so I can easily start styling within a few minutes. There is a lock on the pump which is an advantage since it doesn’t take much pressure to release the spray.

Once dried my hair doesn’t become solid but sticks together and makes my hair feel a little gritty but unlike hairspray doesn’t brush out. This means I have to wash my hair often to get it all out before applying again or it would build up. It can either be applied while the hair is dry or wet and I prefer is while wet as it dilutes the liquid a little. My hair Straighteners are not to be used on wet hair so in both cases I wait for my hair to dry before using or it can make my hair very dry and break.

The result isn’t bad though. My hair may feel horrible but for those looking for the more poker straight ends does get them and it lasts. The spray is designed for short to mid length hair and as my hair gets longer than that I find it a little harder to use and it also uses up much more of the liquid. Unfortunately my straighteners don’t say what temperature they heat to as I always have them on the highest setting but the ingredients in the spray provide protection up to 200 degrees. Having used quite a bit I don’t notice much difference at all in the health of my hair. It doesn’t even look that shiny and if used on dry hair nearer the roots just makes it look greasy and lifeless the longer my hair gets. On wet hair I get a better result but probably use less spray but even then it can be harder to brush and ends up breaking my hair. I tend to try and concentrate on the ends but the spray just ends up soaking me instead as it is quite powerful but find it does give me the sort of result I’m looking for.

When curling my hair I still get the same result. I don’t use ceramic tongs but they still involve a high temperature that ends up damaging my hair. Again my hair doesn’t look as shiny, and I can never run my hands through my hair but considering my hair is quite stubborn and naturally straight, I do find it holds a curl better than using nothing at all.

Overall, once I’m finished with it, I shall be looking for something different. I would rather have better protection than I’m getting at the moment and although it holds the style, just does not feel nice or give me the benefits I want. The smell is not ideal either but at least it doesn’t last. I wouldn’t say it was a complete waste of money as when my hair is shorter I find it works better – I play with my hair less then but for long hair is not advised. At between £3 and £4 it is quite good value for money as it does last quite a while but still not for me. 2 stars!

Please note Dooyoo do have completely the wrong picture for this item.

Summary: Heat protection for your hair - just don't touch it!

I shan't bother trying this then! I like to be able to run my fingers (or let someone else!) through my hair. Jo x
