Advantages: Appears to protect hair from heat, cheap
Disadvantages: smells very chemical
I have long, thick hair which I straighten several times a week, and I am fully aware that the regular use of straighteners is probably the reason it has become quite damaged. I have used various brands of heat protection sprays, but I always find it difficult to see whether they are doing anything for my hair, so it's not something I buy regularly.
I actually bought this spray after a trip to the hairdresser. She was banging on about the benefits of heat protection spray, but she also said my hair was in good condition, which it blatantly wasn't, so I'm not sure how trustworthy she was! Having got rid of all the awful split ends I had, I decided that I would buy a bottle of heat protection spray in the hope that it may do some good.
I chose this particular spray simply because it was the cheapest one available. My bottle is not like the one pictured, so just to be clear, the product I am reviewing is called 'Schwarzkopf Pro Styling Heat Protection Spray.' It could be that they have changed the packaging, or possibly there is more than one heat protection spray made by Schwarzkopf.
The bottle this comes in is clear with a pink trigger spray. It's a young, funky looking bottle, and the trigger spray makes it look slightly more professional than if it just had a normal press-down spray pump.
If you are using this with straighteners your hair should be dry first, and obviously if blow drying then it should be used on damp hair. I don't blow dry my hair very often, so have only ever used this on dry hair.
When you spray the product you will notice that it has an awful chemical smell. The scent really lets the product down, it's quite nauseating in fact, but it only seems to last a few seconds before disappearing and it doesn't linger on the hair.
The liquid sprays out onto the hair in quite a concentrated jet, pretty much soaking the hair. You then just need to run straighteners (or a hairdryer) over the section you have sprayed the product onto, then repeat with other sections of the hair until its all done.
One thing that confused me a little bit, is that on the front of the bottle it says 'long lasting hold'. I wasn't aware that this was supposed to create any hold to the hair, and have not noticed that it is creating any hold to the hair.
Since I've been using this the condition of my hair does not seem to have deteriorated much, which makes me think it is working, although it's difficult to tell. Normally around six weeks after visiting the hairdresser I will start to see split ends again, and at the moment I have very few, so hopefully that is down to the spray.
I paid £1.99 for a 200ml bottle of this from Body Care, although I've seen it in Boots for over £3, so I would advise to shop around to get a good deal.
To conclude, this is the only heat protection spray I've ever used that I actually believe to be working, and protecting my hair. I like the packaging, it was a good price, and the only negative thing I can think about it is the awful chemical smell, but otherwise a good bargain product!
Summary: Protect your hair

- 14/10/08 As I mentioned in the review, the one I am reviewing is called 'Schwarzkopfy Pro Styling Heat Protection Straightening Spray' and is in a different bottle to the one pictured, so it may be that Schwarzkopf make different sprays |
