Advantages: great colour, good price
Disadvantages: quite vibrant if you want a subtle colour
I am naturally blonde, but also get bored easily with my hair. Im either cutting it or highlighting it, and as the winter drew closer, i decided that i wanted a change and though Red was the way forward.
I am quite new to dying my own hair, and usually go to the hairdressers for hightlights. It has been many years since i had a full head colourant, eeekkk.
I went to my local Superdrug, and found these Schwarzkopf foams, they were on offer at £3.99 and i have always found the live xxl colours very striking, so thought it give it a go. I bought Dark cherry Bliss, number 388 for the deepness of colour really and headed home.
Equipped with a very old towel and the instructions and gloves, i had a read through the instructions. All hair colourants advise a 'patch test' first to test for any reactions, which of course i did (not) do, but i do advise it people. Luckily i still have all my hair intect and no signs of burns to the scalp or face :0)
The hair colourant itself comes in a cardboard pot with a domed plastic removable lid, a little like a pot you'd find a mcflurry in or a smoothie! The vibrant packaging lines the outside with pictures of very happy looking people with their fabulous new red hair!
Inside the packaging is a sachet of powder, a bottle of liquid, instructions, gloves and some deep conditioning treatment. All the instructions are very self explanatory and the pot is easy to use. You simply pour in the liquid, add the powder, replace the lid (very important) and shake, shake shake. They recommend at least 40 shakes and then to apply straight away.
It is recommended to apply to clean(ish) dry hair. So laddened with my gloves on, i took off the lid to reveal a thick foam, a little like to topping of a cappachino it a bright orange colour!! I though, go with it, it will darken, and i began to apply it. I applied it like shampoo starting with the root and working my way through my hair. The pot, once full of foam seems to me to be more more than enough to undertake the hair of about shoulder legnth. Initially, i didnt think it would cover my hair, and i have a short graduated bob, but the foam is very thick and goes further than you think.
I left it for 30 minutes and washed it off. By the time i came to wash it off it was a deep red, and i was slightly relieved. Beware, this stuff will stain, so try and be careful when washing it off. I had to replace my shower curtain as it looked like i had massacred someone ( i hadnt for the record). Once rinsed out, i applied the deep conditioner as the instructions stated and left this on for about 5 minutes. My hair is quite dry anyway and thought it would benefit from the extra moisture!
The result, red red hair. Even in colour with a great feel to it. I love it! People at work didnt recognise me initially, but say they prefer me darker, always a bonus, and at £4 a month, i cannot grumble. My hair grows quite quickly, and i do find that although blonde, my roots look a little grey against the red, so i like to reapply every 3-4 weeks.
I havent noticed a decline in the stregnth or state of my hair, and to be honest i think it looks healthier to the eye, as it seems more shiney darker. I am more than pleased with the result.
The foam smells pleasent, fruity. I had no adverse reactions at all. No irritation or itching. No overwelming smell of ammonia, so im really pleased. This colourant is widely available and easy to spot on the shelf.
Schwarzkopf are owned by a company called Henkel, and they have released many other products from laundry care to perfumes.
1 tip that i have found very handy was to paste either vaseline, or any type of cream really along the skin of your hair line on you face, on your ears and around to the neck before applying the dye. It does help to reduce the amount of staining on the skin!
Thankyou for reading
Summary: great if you want a bit of brightness in your life!
