Advantages: FANTASTIC GREY COVERAGE, DEEP MULTI-TONALCOVERAGE...

Disadvantages: WOULD NEED TWO LOTS TO DO LONG HAIR...

Just before going on holiday recently I'd promised to dye my best friend Joanne's hair whilst we were away caravanning...

Doing this meant a hasty trip to my local Morrisons with Joanne in tow to choose a brand plus a colour she would be happy with, and a high-lighting kit to boot. We chose 'Poly Color Tint by Schwarzkopf' presented in a mid-red coloured box for the princely sum of £1.94 which is very cheap for a hair colorant, believe me! It's a brand I've tried several times in the past and had personal decent results from.

Now I have been dying my own, Joanne's and my daughter's hair for years so am a dab hand at it, but there are a few tips for both the new and experienced home colourist to know beforehand.

First to note is you will always find an information leaflet inside every box of home dye that contains simple step by step instructions on how to get started.

Crucially, there is always a 48 hour pre-colour patch test to do to ascertain if you have any sensitivity to the ingredients, as there are some strong chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide and phenylenediamides that can cause an allergic skin reaction in rare cases.
The leaflet explains how to go about it; but assuming all is well then the next step is the preparation which is essential, as you don't want to be running all over the place for an old flannel to mop spills up with, or tatty towels that you don't mind ruining!

Included in the 'Permanent Cream Colour' (level 3 in the dye stakes) containers are:

1 tube of colour cream (50ml)

1 bottle of crème developer (40ml)

1 instructions leaflet

1 pair of gloves (Rubbish - get your own!)

Before you do anything read your Poly Color Tint instructions thoroughly then get everything ready.

If in doubt about anything there is a manned Freephone Schwarzkopf Consumer Advisory UK service on: 0800 328 9214 or 1800 535 634 for Ireland.

This dye is to be used on dry, unwashed hair and it's simply a matter of mixing the colour cream with the crème developer then applying root first if it's a re-growth application or strand by strand if it's a fresh full head application...

I would recommend you buy a proper hair dye brush to get to the finer hairs around your forehead an temples where grey tend to show more if you are using this for camouflage purposes, I have even been known to use a toothbrush on occasion if desperate on holiday to touch my roots up!

For the full head coverage you just wait 20-30 minutes, though in my experience the longer the better so go for the full half an hour if you feel confident enough.
The re-growth instructions are to apply a third of the solution to the re-growth area only and then massage gently into that area - wearing the gloves at all times of course on both application methods - leave the colorant to develop for 20-25 minutes and then apply the rest to the rest of the hair left originally untreated.

After the development time has elapsed (Hey, never mind sitting down -get that pile of ironing done now!), rinse off with warm water until it runs clear and then wash with a gentle shampoo and then give it a thorough condition too.

On dying Joanne's hair a 'Medium Brown' (shade 41) we encountered no problems at all.

The solution is rather runny but you make sure the surrounding area is protected with an old shower curtain or a couple of old bath towels in case of errant splashes.

Schwarzkopf promised 'Natural rich colours' along with 'Improves hair condition' and that's exactly what it delivered!

What I couldn't get over was how well it covered the grey; it pledges 'Perfect Grey Coverage' on the front of the box and it certainly was indeed.
Joanne's hair was left sleek with a gorgeous glow from rich brown hues; there was a multi-tonal element that looked great even after several washes that week and she report it still looks as fab!

The makers say on the blurb that there is a special colour pigment combination included in the mixture and it certainly showed in the glossy result. In fact I was rather envious of how super- conditioned my friend's hair looked as my hair dye is three times that amount to buy *Grrr*!!

'Vibrant' is a word used on the box's hype but it is actually true, the lasting depth to the shade was lovely and Joanne's hair looked simply lovely both in the day and in the deeper light of night...

Hair is said to be healthier and fortified with proteins and it certainly was, she was over the moon as to how luxuriant it looked post-coloured and I was pleased as her impromptu hairdresser cum styling slave as we tweaked her luscious locks into place post-wash.

For excellent results for a ridiculously low price I cannot fault this product at all - my only little niggle is how bad the poor plastic gloves are, so invest in a better pair as no-one wants to end up with permanently coloured fingertips, do they?

This has to be a 5 glossy, enriched and pigmented Dooyoo Stars for a fantastic product...please note though if your hair is past shoulder length you would be better investing in two boxes as there isn't enough in one bottle of colour for hair any longer than that...

The levels in hair colour are as follows:

1 - Washes out

2 - Lasts up to 24 washes (usually known as semi-permanent)

3 - Permanent
