Not to be confused with Radox's deliciously scented Shower Smoothies (or any other smoothie) Schwarzkopf's Supersoft range of 'smoothie' shampoos all feature various ingredients with yoghurt, in the case of the one I am reviewing, coconut.

I'm not particularly brand loyal so I was happy enough to throw a Pound at this product, even though I have not used Schwarzkopf products for years, finding that they have become drearily old fashioned. The fact that this particular range has ended up on the shelves of the cut price retailers might suggest that I am not the only one who feels like that.

The bottle follows the typical Schwarzkopf tear-drop shape with an easy to use flip top lid. I can see why they chose this coffee-ish colour for the bottle but to me a smoothie evokes ideas of vitality and this just looks a bit dull. No, it was the combination of yoghurt and coconut that caught my eye, definitely not the packaging. I do tend to make a beeline for anything that has a coconut fragrance and a surreptitious sniff of the contents persuaded me to make a purchase.

Each product in the range is intended, as you would expect for a different hair type. This one is intended to 'restore, moisturise and condition dry and damaged hair leaving it silky smooth'. I only really have an issue with my hair being dry in the summer when I tend to spend a lot of time out doors, especially after a holiday by the sea. I am a bit lazy when it comes to conditioning my locks and the combination of sun, sea water and neglect makes my hair quite dry. However, as this tends to affect only the middle to ends of my hair, and not my scalp, I was a little wary of using a very rich shampoo as the roots are prone to be a little greasy.

The fragrance is very mild and reminded me of coconut milk rather than the slightly cloying sweetness of the Body Shop's range of coconut products. The appearance of the shampoo was a little disappointing as it has that slightly grey look that the watery liquid on the top of the solid coconut when you open a tin of coconut milk, whereas I was hoping for an opaque white shampoo. The consistency is good, not so thick it takes forever to squeeze it out of the bottle, and not too runny so that it disappears off your hand and straight down the plughole.

This, I'm sorry to say, is where the positives end. This shampoo didn't suit me at all. I found it actually made my hair feel almost rope like after rinsing and I had to use a conditioner after each of the handful of washes I used this shampoo for.

Once conditioned my hair felt smoother but that was obviously the effect of my conditioner, and not the shampoo. There is a conditioner that goes with this shampoo but I wouldn't team the two up if the shampoo didn't meet with my approval in the first place so I just used whatever I had to hand. This meant that my hair no longer smelled of coconut, and it was with the hope of it having that scent after washing that I'd bought the shampoo in the first place. I did try the shampoo without following it up with a conditioner and found that my hair did not retain that 'freshly washed' feeling as long as it does with other brands.

Having spent only £1 on this I was not devastated and Himself, having very short hair, found he could use it perfectly well and the contents got used up. Based on my own experience (long hair, medium thickness, dry ends) I couldn't recommend it. I believe that your shampoo should make your hair feel good after use and shouldn't require that you use a conditioner after every wash; unfortunately, that's exactly what Schwarzkopf Supersoft Smoothie shampoo did for me.
I've only seen this in low price shops and having tried it I can understand why it hasn't been a big success. A look on the web tells me it comes in a smaller bottle, but I have only seen it in the 400ml size.
