Advantages: decent price, bright color, conditoning, fairly long lasting
Disadvantages: Abit hard to apply.
I've dyed my hair all kinds of colors - blue, green, red, and often pink & I usually use La Riche, but when they ran out of pink dye in the store, I decided to try Stargazers Magenta shade.
Avaliability - Stargazer sell makeup & hair products & can usually be brought from 'alternative' shops - goth/punk/wicca-type places. They're not usually avaliable from superdrugs or boots.
Price - A bottle of dye usually retails at around four to five pounds a bottle, depending on where you buy it from.
Color Ranges - Their dyes range in color from 'African Green' to 'Baby Pink'. Often the stores will have little swathces of hair to show what the colors are like - but remember this shows the optimum brightness that COULD be achieved on bleached hair.
Packaging - Stargazer dyes come in a plastic tube with an applicator-style tip. They are in boxes, with the instructions on the side of the box. Plastic gloves are included with the dye (which I would definetly reccomend using) I would also reccomend using a plastic cap, to wear whilst the dye is developing, and a tinting brush - this is not included.
Instructions - This is a fairly simple dye to use & the instructions are quite straightforward & easy to follow.
Ingredients - Stargazer dyes are free of ammonia or peroxide. This means they do not damage hair, even if used repeatedly - I actually found the dye to have a conditoning effect.
Performance - I used Stargazer Magenta dye on hair that had been freshly bleached blonde. (The darker your hair is, the less dramatic the effect will be) My mum helped me to apply it & she noted that it was very thick and difficult to distribute easily. I would also reccomend covering bathroom surfaces and wearing old clothes and gloves - this dye seems to get everywhere! ( If you need to remove this dye from surfaces, just bathroom cleaner and a scrubbing brush does the job) My hair is very thick & was medium lenght & I had just enough dye to cover it all. If you have very long hair, you will probably need two packs. Unlike some dyes, the smell was fairly inoffensive & neutral.
I left the dye on for a couple of hours, wrapped in clingfilm and heated with a hairdryer every 15 minutes or so (This is not in the instructions, but I find it helps dye to penetrate the hair shaft)
When I came to wash the dye off - I rinsed for about 30 minutes and the water just would NOT run clear. Eventually I had to give up, & dried my hair (covering the towel in dye). When my hair was dry, initially the dye rubbed off on everything my head touched. If I leant my head in my hand, my hand would be pink after a minute.
However, the next time I washed my hair, the residue seemed to get washed away & I didn't have this problem any longer.
Color - the intesity of the color was fantastic. It was vibrant and bright & almost neon! I would definetly give this dye 10/10 for amazing color.
Longevity - I don't wash my hair often - about twice a week, so this dye lasted a few months. Obviously if you wash your hair every day, it will not last so long and will probably need to be touched up after a few weeks.
Summary: I definetly reccomend this dye.
