I am plagued with curled hair. I know lots of people don't see this as a plague but I certainly do. It seems to get joy out of not doing what I want and irritating me. I'm on a pursuit to find to best products to help me achieve soft and pretty curls and the closest I can find is this, Sunsilk Silky and Straight shampoo.
Odd, I know! But shampoo for straight hair really does work on my curly hair!
I find this product is easy to use, just like any ordinary shampoo. It doesn't leave lots of residue in my hair (although I'm careful to wash it out thoroughly) so it's free to bounce naturally. And instead of looking like I've been dragged through a bush, it leaves my hair looking calmed. It doesn't result in longer drying time either - great for a busy lifestyle! It seems to be packed with moisture too because it leaves my hair healthy and easy to brush.
Every now and again I feel the need to try out other products such as things that come in little bottles for holiday packign and stuff like that. I think it speaks volumes that I always end up back with this one! And of course it's not a bad thing that this doesn't leave a large dent in my purse!!
What is Sunsilk?
Sunsilk Haircare is part of the Unilever Company. They have many different types of shampoos and conditioners of which to chose from dependent on your hair color, and type.
I am reviewing the Sunsilk "Silky and Straight" Shampoo. Other products in the Shampoo range include:
- Voluptuous Volume
- Care and Repair
- Waves and Curls
- Lively Blonde
- Deeply Brunette
- Fresh and Flowing
All of these are also in the conditioner range.
This shampoo type is for hair that is prone to frizz, or that kinks. The shampoo straightens your hair no matter what length it is, thanks to its satin proteins. It claims it can leave your hair sleek and shiny. And if you are after the best results (lets be honest, who isn't?!) then using the silky straight conditioner will make sure your hair is looking its absolute best.
Smell and Appearance
I find the shampoo to be quite thick, meaning the bottle tends to last longer. Its white in colour.
It smells very fresh - however not too overpowering. It has no distinct smell and I can't really liken it to anything. The smell is still apparent once your hair is washed and dry, giving it that fresh feeling.
This shampoo is one of the most inexpensive, non-supermarket brands that I can find. Just recently, most major stores have stopped selling this product - however I can always find it in Poundland. I however think the product is worth more than a quid! In this case, you get a lot more than you pay for! Its also available at Morrisons - also for a quid....bargain!
The shampoo comes in a shiny lilac coloured tube. The tube is 200ml, and is an upright design, meaning the cap is at the bottom so you have easy access to the shampoo without having to squeeze too hard! Its made of a very soft plastic. The shampoo stands up on its lid, which is clear, hard plastic.
The bottle is fully recyclable.
On the front of the tube in a darker purple is the name of the product, the brand, and the type of hair its best for "Hair that tends to Kink or Frizz" and on the back are the ingredients, how to use and contact details for Unilever.
Instructions for Use
Very simple and no different to any other shampoo! Make sure your hair is wet, apply a blob of the shampoo and work it into a lather, then rinse! It then says to repeat if necessary and use the conditioner afterwards if desired.
I am always trying out different shampoos as my hair is the bane of my life. Its shoulder length, with very frizzy and kinked ends! My roots tend to go greasy quite easily so I rarely condition it.
Even though the shampoo is cheap, its one of the only shampoos that does what it says, and thats to leave my hair straight, and silky. The packaging isn't unappealing, its a well known company, and it smells nice - I have no idea why its so cheap!
The shampoo itself is easy to apply, it comes out of its packaging easy and without any hassle, it doesn't drip due to its texture, and as mentioned previously this means the bottle lasts longer as I don't need to use so much of it. It lathers very well and my hair automatically feels squeaky clean and smells nice. It rinses out easily enough, even though the lather is thick and plentiful! I only ever use the conditioner if its an evening wash as my hair does go greasy easily through the day.
After drying my hair, my hair is silky, and straight without the need for the conditioner. The smell of the shampoo still lingers, and remains fresh all day. My hair looks and feels healthy all day long. I would recommend this shampoo to anyone with frizzy or kinked hair - it really does do its job!
I first brought this shampoo along with the matching conditioner a few weeks ago from my local 99p store for well 99p and in truth I only brought it because it was so cheap and Im currently looking for a cheaper replacment to the Tresemme brand that I normally use, which is just getting to expensive to buy on a regular basis. And I have to say I was very pleasantly suprised with this sunsilk range and it has certainly earned a place in my bathroom as a permanant fixture and Im glad I took a chance on a brand which I hadnt heard all that much about!
Appearance & Packaging:
This particular type of sunsilk comes in a light purple sort of tube which has a top that is easy to pop off and squeeze of liquid out of when your in the shower. It comes in a 200ml tube and the liquid inside is sort of a pearl colour and looks very glittery and shimmering, it aslo feels immediatley soft when you put it on your hands. The back of the bottle also has all the necessary information you need: ingrediants and an email address and address to write to should you have any problems or issues with this product.
What Does The Product Promise?:
It promises to instantly smooth and soften hair that kinks or frizz's and to give you silky straight hair all day long no matter where you are or what your doing!! Sounds great right? Now does it work?
Did It Deliver On Its Promises?:
On my hair it did! Im a bit of a self-confessed straightening addict and use my straightners at least a few times a day and this really kept my hair straight for hours and it actually looked shinier and more healthy as well, so Id say for me yes it really did deliver.
So What Did I Think Of The Product:
I thought it was brilliant. My hair can become frizzy and flyaway quite easily and I found using this actually stopped that for a while. It left my hair feeling fresh and clean and it looked pretty great as well. Id definatley recommend it to women who have quite thick hair that can become frizzy as it will calm all that down. For the price its brilliant a must have if your looking for a cheaper allternative to your usual shampoo but dont want to comprimise on quality. 10/10!!
Price & Stockits:
Get down to your local 99p store or poundland and you can get this incredibly cheap! Great value for money and they do sell it in most stores.
I bought this shampoo along with the conditioner after they were on sale for £1 each in my local Asda. It wasn't my usual brand but I thought I would give them a go anyway. I'm now a convert and use this as my regular shampoo.
The shampoo squeezes out of the tube quite easily and is a lovely pearly white colour. It feels very creamy and smooth, not at all gunky or sticky. It forms a really great lather and smooths easily across the hair. I have very long hair and found that a little goes a long way. The shampoo smells very nice with a floral clean fragrance that still retains its smell for a long time when your hair is dry. The shampoo rinses off easily, leaving your hair squeaky clean and smooth.
After drying, my hair felt really moisturised, without feeling or looking greasy and I had no tangles. I have quite frizzy, wavy hair and this shampoo left my hair frizz free, just leaving nice gentle waves after towel drying. When using a hair dryer, my hair was really easy to get straight, without having to play around with the hair dryer too much. Another bonus with this product is that your hair stays frizz free long after drying.
As some of you may know, I have stupidly long thick hair. So it must be quite straight?
I wish. My hair does everything it can in it's power to annoy me (I think it has its own personality), it kinks, it is full of frizz, it has a whole wavy thing going on, and when blow dried it looks like I have literally been dragged through a hedge backwards!
I am a great fan of Sunsilks hair products, so when I saw Sunsilk Silky and Straight sitting there on a shelf in Tesco's, I had to grab it quick before it took one look at my hair and decided to run!
Sunsilk Silky and Straight shampoo
Availability and Price

Sunsilk Silky and Straight Shampoo, claims to leave hair 'Smooth & Sleek and Shiny'
The shampoo comes in a lovely pastel purple big tube, it is different to the picture at the top of the page. Sunsilk Silky & Straight is written in black,
and shampoo is written in white with a dark purple block surrounding it. In the centre of the tube is a dark purple round circle with a picture of a woman's head with metallic pinkie purple long hair, along with the words smooth and sleek shiny hair. Off of the main purple circle is a white circle with the words satin proteins and underneath is the question, Hair that tends to kink or frizz?
On the back of the tube are the directions, Sunsilks address, the ingredients and that it is 200ml. There is also a before and after picture of kinked frizzy hair turning into sleek straight hair.
The tube sits on a flip top lid, with a little hole that makes it easier to dispense the liquid.
How to use it
Massage shampoo into wet hair and rinse, repeat as required.
I love the design and colour of the tube and it adds a nice touch of colour to my bathroom. It's great that they have got a picture on the back of before and after using the shampoo, and this filled me with the hope that something could finally tame my tresses.
The shampoo itself is a pearlescent white liquid that is of a medium consistency so you don't waste any of the product. I use 4 to 5 walnut sized squirts of the shampoo which feels like satin and it lathers up really quickly. If you have short to midlength hair around 2-3 walnut sized squirts will suffice.
The smell is scrumptious it smells very floral with hints of rose and lily and a delicate note of apple, with a freshly washed linen smell to it as well. Its the kind of smell that I associate with a bright summers day, so I find it very uplifting.
I found it really easy to rinse and my hair felt really soft and tangle free, and smelling lovely and fresh. I always use a conditioner on my hair and Sunsilk recommend that you use their silky and straight conditioner with it, so I used that afterwards.
I started blow drying my hair and it was feeling very smooth and soft and it still smelt great, so I was looking forward to not having to use my straighteners. Unfortunately the dryer my hair was getting the more I started seeing those familiar kinks and frizzy bits. By the end of drying my hair I was really impressed with the shine, it really did look radiant and my hair felt so lovely and soft, which was a step up from what it was before I used the shampoo. However instead of looking dry kinked and frizzy and dragged through a hedge, it now looked shiny and dragged through a hedge.
It has improved the condition of my hair and it feels soft shiny and smells lovely. It didn't live up to it's claims of making my hair straight, smooth and sleek, so I still had to use my straighteners.
Whilst it didn't live up to all it's claims, I will continue to use this because it really does give my hair a lovely sheen to it and the fresh smell lasts ages.
I used to religiously stick to using Head and Shoulders but I was finding that even after straightening it wouldn't be long before my hair was wavy and frizzy again so I decided to make a change. There are so many products on the shelves that all claim to do the same thing I just picked up the one I liked the colour of the bottle! Very diplomatic of me! However, even with my random choice selection I found a very good shampoo. When I use this my hair feels smooth and soft, not dry and straw-like as it previously was. I have combined this shampoo with the conditioner and hair serum and I find even when blow drying and straightening my hair I get a smooth, shiny finish which lasts all day. I have found that even straightening time is reduced as this shampoo enriches the hair to prevent frizz. I would recommend this product to anyone struggling to keep their hair straight and frizz free throughout the day.
My hair is quite frankly mad this time of year! I can make it poker straight with my straighteners and within minutes of walking out the door I have a triangle hair do again! My hair is not curly at all just .... well ... puffy!
Whilst walking around Wilkinsons the other day I noticed this 200ml bottle for 95p, naturally I wasn't expecting much for that price. The label asks 'Do your kinks and frizz mean you are stuck between straight and curly, neither one nor the other?' YES! I cried, and in the basket it went! I have seen this in Tesco's too.
+ Packaging +
The bottle is just too cute, its pale purple with a darker purple lid. The shape is all curvy in fact it is the shampoo equivalent of a nissan micra! (ok maybe ignore that comment!) It has a flip top lid which is easy to open and close and dispensing is fine too.
+ The science bit! +
Apparently the shampoo is 'enriched with satin proteins', I have no idea what they are but according to the Elida Hair Institute they smooth down the shaft of your hair, making it look sleeker.
+ Use +
This shampoo is like all others in use; wet hair, rub it in and rinse! The smell is divine, it reminds me of my old English teacher, who always smelt of soap! Unfortunatly the smell doesn't hang about long. Its a nice clean smell, quite plain and subtle. You need a fair amount about the size of a 50 pence piece for my shoulder length hair, and it washes out easily. As soon as I had rinsed, my hair felt silky and I only needed to blow dry it and quickly run the straighteners over it. It took me half the time to do my hair in the end. I still ended up with triangle hair shortly after but I'm reviewing a shampoo not a miricle!
They do say to use their conditioner and cream too but I use neither. The cream is in the same colour bottle but has a pump and you just smooth it over your hair as you would a mousse. I really did notice a difference with just the shampoo so hopefully the other products will be as good. Maybe I will try the cream too and see if that helps the effect to last... watch this space!
I will warn you all now, don't get it in your eyes, it hurt mine for days! Other than that it didn't annoy my scalp or make my hair greasier than usual.
+ Would I use it again? +
Yes I would, it was nice not having frizzy hair but something inside me feels the price makes it feel cheap! Yes! obviously a female thing to say! I feel more of a princess when I spend more!
Happy hair days!
I must admit that I only tried this shampoo because it was on 2 for 1 at Tesco and I bought the conditioner to go with it. I've tended to stick to Herbal Essence for a while and did fancy a change but wasn't sure which one to try since there are so many that claim to make your hair controllable.
This has to be one of the best changes I've made in a while though as it leaves your hair not only straight but really shiny and manageable after using the conditioner of the same type. I've got shoulder length straight hair with layers but I find that in damp weather the ends of the layers do tend to frizz up a bit at times. I need something to help the straightening process and this has got them under control. I'm not sure how it would work on someone with a bad frizz problem but I know that different shampoos work differently with the individuals hair and there are many factors involved such as colouring and natural oils which is why is it so difficult to find that perfect hair product. There is also a 24/7 smoothing cream available in this range too though if you need that extra bit of help.
I tend to have to blow dry my hair for quite a long time as it seems to take ages to dry even after using a towel first. My hairdresser tells me this is because it retains a lot of water after washing it and even she was surprised at how long certain areas take to dry off. Because of all the blowdrying my hair tends to be a little dry so of course this can frizz it slightly too.
With this product you don't need to use loads of the shampoo to get a good lather and it spreads throughout the hair really well. This is great as the bottle lasts quite a while although it would be nice to get it in bigger sizes the way products such as Tresemme are sold. After shampooing the hair has that squeakiness about it which I really associate with being clean and it isn't too tangled before finishing off with the conditioner. It has a pleasant smell, not too strong like a lot of the fruit ones can be, but just leaves hair smelling fresh and clean and looking fantastic.
The conditioner is good too - really creamy and easy to rub into both hands before smoothing down your hair. I've found that some conditioners seem to sit in lumps and it all ends up on one area of your hair but this one massages in really well to give that added feeling of smooth and shiny hair.
There are lots of different types of shampoo in the Sunsilk range so if this isn't the look you are after you can try one of the others including Waves and Curls, Anti-flat, Anti-itch, Fresh for Longer, Respect and Balance, Care and Repair or Colour and Shine. There are also the new range of colour enhancing products which are specifically designed to intensify the colour of your hair whether it be natural or not.
As for the brand, they are part of the Unilever group who are probably more well known for other brands such as Knorr, Carte D'Or or Hellmans for their food ranges or for the likes of Persil or Cif for homecare products.
In summary I would say that this is one of the better bargains I have had in a long time and would gladly buy it again at the normal price of £1.84 for 250mls. The conditioner also sells at the same price.
