Advantages: holds hair in place

Disadvantages: too many chemicals

What's big, spikey, smells of apples and scares children and small animals? My new hairdo. It cost me a fortune to look this way!

This is how it all began. I had my hair cut into spikes at the top and sides. The front and back are still fairly long as I didn't want to look like a boy.

My hairdresser suggested that I purchase some hair gum to help me keep my new style looking 'spikey'.

Superdrug was my first port of call. I hunted through the different hair preparations until I came across 'Coco
Gumbo'. I liked the name, it looked simple to use and there was a special offer on this product. (Normally 3.99 but with a pound off.)

The container is a white plastic one about three centimetres deep and six centimetres wide. It has a black lid and the label is purple and orange. It is actually quite an appealing container, eventhough it is so simple.

The pot hold 50mls of hair gum. The contents are a lovely blue colour and semi liquid. The aroma is one of 'over ripe'apples (I can think of no other way yto describe it.) It isn't unpleasant, just rather clingy.

It tells you on the container that you can 'ruffle it, scruff it, chunk it, tease it,' and I assume it refers to hair.

There aren't any instructions telling you exactly how to do these things, so I began experimenting. A small blob placed on the palm of the hair, spread over the fingers, etc and worked into my hair fromthe roots upward seemed to do the trick. A little bit more gum was needed to do the 'spikey bits'.

My hair stayed where I had put it for a couple of hours, then decided to give up the struggle and lay down again.

I tried using more of the product but this made my hair look dull and greasey.

I did notice that this gum is made in UK and contains a host of chemicals, including the following:

propylene, glycol, phosphates, pertrolatum, copolymer,
distearate, phenoxytheanol, propanol, etc (these are just the ones I have heard of).

That seems to me to be a awful lot of chemicals to be putting on the scalp and I did get some eye irritation where I had rubbed my eye after touching my hair.

This product works for a short time but I am still looking for one that smels better and lasts longer.

I think we're conned by the pictures of the hairstyles! I got a short-ish & spiky look in October and it just didn't work, no hair product was going to make it :o(
