Advantages: Gives a rich colour whilst making hair feel lovely
Disadvantages: None for me
I am very aware that in the not too distant future, grey hairs are going to make an unwelcome appearance in my life, and from then on, I will be spending a lot of money on hair dye. Therefore, for as long as I can get away with it, I do not want to colour my hair, but sometimes I feel like a change to liven things up a bit - especially if I'm going out for the evening. Superdrug Colour Effect is a very cheap an easy solution to this and I love it.
Superdrug Colour Effects is a temporary hair dye and comes in several shades from blonde to dark brown, but my personal colour of choice is Rich Red. This product comes in a small plastic bottle with a flip lid that is not particularly "snappy": I would not trust this bottle in my holiday suitcase! It stands on its lid, so the product is always where you want it, which adds to the ease of using it.
The instructions are very clear and simple. Basically, you use this product in place of your normal shampoo, as and when desired. The rich Red shade is very red, and when it is squeezed out of the bottle it has a strong coppery colour, and a slight chemical aroma which does not last after it has been washed out. It is advised that this product is tested on a small area of skin before full application in case of allergies.
I wet my hair, then towel dry it lightly before filling my palm with the product and rubbing it thoroughly into my hair. If my hair is too wet, it lathers up considerably and drips all down my neck, but if my hair is dryer I can happily twist my hair up on top and forget about it. It is recommended that you leave the dye on for a minimum of five minutes, to a maximum of twenty minutes. I give it the full twenty minutes for a deeper colour, and if I want an even stronger shade; I use it on consecutive days. Washing out is equally simple: just rinse with warm water until the water runs clear. I do not find it necessary to put on gloves whilst using this, but I always scrub my hands after use, and the dye comes off easily, without staining skin or nails.
I have very dark brown hair, and when I was younger and experimenting with colour, dye never showed up that well, but after fifteen years of daily straightening, my hair has got weaker, and I am always surprised at the difference this dye makes; it is a lovely shade of deep red without being too dramatic, it compliments my natural highlights, and I am always very pleased with the results.
This dye is sold as a "wash in, wash out" product, but this is not true. Once washed in, it can take up to a week for the colour to go completely, even shampooing daily. I'm all the more happy with it if I can stretch a few extra days out of the colour, but be warned: this is not a product to be experimenting with, thinking that it will be gone by tomorrow if you don't like it.
After using this, my hair shines wonderfully for several days after application. It is glossy, smooth and feels silky soft and clean, so the shampoo factor works just as well as the dye. It is stated on the bottle that it contains up to three applications, but I have often got four or five uses out of it, and so for 97p, I think that this is a fantastic value product, and I will continue using it for special occasions until the dreaded grey hairs see fit to appear (a bit longer please hair, I'm not ready yet!)
Summary: A quick, cheap way to liven up your locks

- 22/08/09 I used to use this when I was younger and worried about the length dye would last. I think its naughty to promote it as wash in wash out when it clearly doesnt. Excellent Review. C |
