Advantages: Beautiful new colour, extremely cheap, up to 5 applications per bottle.

Disadvantages: Maybe they should sell it in a larger size also?

Superdrug Colour Effects are an own-brand equivalent of the tried-and-tested Wella 'Shaders and Toners' range - they are a selection of light and dark shades that you can wash in and wash out. Priced at 99p, they're a cheap way to revitalise your look!

I have light blonde hair, and if you've read any of my other reviews you'll know that I struggle to eliminate the reddish tones in my hair! So I am always willing to try out anything that may be able to tone this down, and when I noticed that they did a 'Cool Blonde' (8.1) shade, I decided to give it a go. The packaging is simple - a quite small silver bottle with a flip top lid. You don't need gloves, a cap or any of that other nonsense as the amount of actual dye in the product is minimal.

Anyway, I washed my hair as directed, and then applied the product. It smells unusual, sort of fruity but chemically at the same time, although not unpleasant. The colour of the product is a very dark, metallic purpley grey, but when you put it on wet hair and lather it up the suds are a light lilac shade. I left mine on for about 20 minutes to ensure the shade took on my hair, and then rinsed, and conditioned my hair with a normal conditioner.

The results: Well, the orange in my hair was VERY toned down - the all over ashy shade made my lighter highlights perfectly white, and the darker shades turned a pretty dark ash blonde. The condition is improved slightly by the product but not significantly enough that you don't require a conditioner afterwards.

The effects don't last long, I would say after 3 washes they are completely gone, so there is no harm in trying to various shades that they do until you find one you really like! Having said that, the bottle states it contains up to 3 applications, but I have found you can get at least 5 even with long hair like mine.

All in all, you cannot beat this for the price - and the effects are really startling! Highly recommend the cool blonde shade for anybody after that 'white blonde' look!
