Advantages: Great invention, easy to use, works brilliantly, innovative, it comes in Pink, I love it
Disadvantages: None at all
I bet if I said the two words 'Tangle Teezer' you would frown at me and wonder what an earth I was on about wouldn't you? Well this product shock horror is not from Lush, it is infact a product which was featured on Dragons Den in November 2007 and is a new revolutionary hair brush/comb designed to deal with knots, tangles and difficult hair.
The inventor of Tangle Teezer Shaun Pulfrey, known as Shaun P and he is known in the world of hairdressing and he was given a hard time by the Dragons on Dragons Den. Shaun had come up with the concept of Tangle Teezer and had used his own money to produce some of the products himself and only went onto the show when a work colleague convinced him it was a good idea. Now a year on, Shaun who never gave up on his idea has made over £800,000 from his product and now has a whole host of celebrities praising the invention as well as winning a few awards.
The Tangle Teezer is made of plastic and is available in either a bright Neon Pink colour or Ebony and is uniquely designed to go through your hair effortlessly, without pulling out hairs and getting stick and without causing you to yelp and without causing further damage to your hair by splitting and breaking it. Upon the base of the Tangle Teezer are little spiked teeth which are relatively soft to the touch and part of their shape was scientifically designed to allow an easier brush stroke through the hair. Although the base is made of plastic and there is no handle to hold, the shape of the design is such that it fits comfortably into the palm of your hand to aid the brushing process.
I tend to brush my hair when it is both wet and dry, it depends on my mood at the time and whether or not I have put a pre-wash or leave in conditioner onto my hair. My personal preference is to let my hair dry naturally on its own without using a hair dryer and then my GHD hair straighteners which I know, even with using heat protection sprays, do not fully protect my hair and then to vigorously brush the hair as well, it all leads to causing damage. So with that in mind I didn't hesitate to buy one of these when introduced to it at my local hair salon.
I opted for the Neon Pink Tangle Teezer which cost £9.99 and one of the main things I liked about it was that it was easy to fit into the palm of my hand without slipping around as I used it for the fist time, I initially assumed it would be a nightmare to grip because there is nothing which stands out on the design for you to grip or place your fingers on. The product has been designed to be used on all hair types and is recommended for use on hair extensions, colour treated hair, fragile hair, tangle prone hair, weaves, wigs and knotty hair and it is the perfect handbag size to be carried around to be used and when is necessary.
So how does it work? The enclosed leaflet that came with my Tangle Teezer informed me that in order to have healthy hair cuticle itself is vitally important on the outer hair layer because they protect the hair and ensure it looks and feels good. However if you brush your hair very rigorously and pull at it when brushing it can lead to split ends, breakages and generally leaving your hair looking dull and unkempt and once the cuticle itself is damaged it is irreversible. So this brought about the idea of Tangle Teezer.
When it comes to using the product it can be used on wet or dry hair and having tried it on my hair when it has been both wet and dry I actually don't have a preference because I feel it works at detangling my hair under both conditions. As you brush your hair it is advised that you apply firm pressure because as the tangle Teezer glides through your hair you can treat yourself to a scalp massage and this is also beneficial because by massaging your scalp it helps with the stimulation of blood flow and circulation which in turn helps to nourish the hair follicle as well as encouraging new hair growth, a scalp massage also helps to reduces stress and distribute the hairs natural oils to protect and condition the hair. So that is something to remember when using this product. As you press firmly onto the scalp when brushing your hair with the Tangle Teezer you can feel the spikes gently massaging the head and it is really relaxing, although my own personal preference is to let someone else brush my hair so I get the bigger benefit. Unlike most combs and brushes, the Tangle Teezer has been designed so that it can brush your hair fro root to tip, so whether you have exceptionally long hair, mid length hair or short hair it really doesn't matter, the Tangle Teezer can be used on all hair.
When using the product and you find that your hair does become tangled, which mind often does underneath where it can hurt the most when you try to untangle it, this product does actually make the untangling pain free, because the spikes on the brush are robust enough and move through the hair, your can glide it through your hair with minimum effort whilst untangling the smallest of problems. You can use this brush either by brushing the hair in a downwards style or by bending over to brush your hair upside down.
As I have said before I often use a pre-wash treatment on my hair and I would usually brush my hair through with a wide toothed comb to ensure my hair got equal coverage, I now use this Tangle Teezer instead because I feel it is much more effective in giving an even distribution of the conditioner and any part of my hair which has too much product upon it remains on the base of the comb to be washed off, so when I do use the comb I can be sure not to over-treat my hair and prevent getting the conditioning I want.
When it comes to blow drying my hair, I always divide my hair into sections and then use the Tangle Teezer to comb through my hair as I dry it. Being made of a plastic substance I did expect the base and the spikes to get hot being close to the heat and possibly end up melting, but I am happy to say that it didn't get warm at all and was brilliant to use with the hairdryer because once my hair was dried there was a lot less frizz than there would usually be and my hair wasn't as flyaway either, so when it came to using my straighteners it was really easy to use them.
Overall I am really glad I came across this product, it is something quirky and different and not something I was actually looking to buy, it just happened to be the bright pink neon colour which caught my attention whilst being sat at my hair salon and when I enquired as to what it was my hairdresser used it on my hair and from that moment on I was definitely buying one. I can rate them highly enough, it is easy to use, it is pain free to de-tangle your hair and for anyone with children who hate having their hair brushed I am sure it is possibly the best product to ever be invented. I love it and cannot recommend it highly enough.
Summary: A professional hair care brush
