Advantages: Cheap, mild, pleasant fragrance

Disadvantages: None really - you get what you pay for

Have you ever thought about the cost of all the "everyday" toiletries. Before leaving the house each day I use:- shower gel, shampoo, contact lens solution, deodorant, cleanser, toner, moisturiser, eye cream, hair gel, a little make up, a splodge of toothpaste and a squirt of perfume. And that is the absolute minimum. I guess some guys perhaps get away with less, but if you stop to add up the cost of this little lot you would seriously consider staying in bed. (I can think of other reasons to stay in bed................but they wouldn't really be relevant to a shampoo review.)

As I was thinking of all this, and wondering how I could economise, it struck me that my shampoo bottle seemed to empty rather quickly, and although I wash my hair daily, I use just a tiny amount. I then realised that my husband was the one who was being rather greedy with the bath and shower products. This particularly bothered me in that he is almost bald! The little hair he has is clipped on a number 2, yet he was happily lathering up with copious amounts of my expensive hair products.

Despite my protests he didn't seem to be able to curb his insatiable appetite for shampoo so I figured I needed to find a cheaper brand.

I am very wary "economy" shampoos. Yes - I'm all for products and ingredients not being tested on animals, but I also don't want to be the one with my hair dropping out or my scalp burnt.

I came across Tesco Apple and Aloe Vera shampoo. It's for frequent use. I figured that this would be a good one to try - yes, we are frequent users and I kind of hoped that this would mean the shampoo was mild.
Also, I'm not one for coconut smelling shampoos. I love the smell, but it reminds me of holidays and cocktails a bit too much for using in our shower cabinet on a dark November morning.

Another thing that really appealed to me was that for just 57p, you get 750 ml of the stuff. Enough for my husband to slop all over the bathroom without breaking the bank.

There is nothing fancy about the bottle - it's just a clear recycle-able plastic bottle with a sticky label decorated with a picture of a couple of green apples.

It's also not one of those silly bottles that you stand on their end. It has a flip cap and you just pour it out.

The shampoo is quite thin and runny and is quite a bright green colour. It does smell pleasantly of apples but not strongly. I have to get my nose pretty close to get a whiff.

I have fairly short hair, but even with longer styles I don't think much shampoo is required to get a pretty good lather. It feels fairly nice on your scalp - not in any way thick, greasy or too slimy. I find that it rinses out fairly easily - one wash is enough to get my hair squeaky clean.

The bottle gives the usual instructions - in case you are new to the hair washing business(!) and says it leaves your hair "soft, healthy and manageable". Pretty accurate stuff really.

My hair always feels very clean after I have used it. I don't think people would be aware of my hair having an apple fragrance - I can't say I am particularly bothered about that. My hair gel does have a fragrance which would probably cover anything up anyway.

Sometimes it feels as though my hair gets a little dry - but with trips to the gym it can sometimes be washed twice a day, so I can't really blame the shampoo. I have an economical conditioner as well that I use to rectify this from time to time.

So, all in all, for 57p, this is a really good buy.

I can't say that I feel particularly pampered by using this product, and I confess that when I go away for a few nights with work, I take my own, more expensive shampoo with me.......................you see, my greedy husband can't get his hands on that! But when trying to make a few cutbacks, you can save a few pennies here and not feel too hard done by.

Summary: A good value product for frequent use
