Advantages: Very reasonably priced, smells gorgeous, cleans childrens hair well and rinses easily

Disadvantages: Is not a 'no tears' formulation

I had run out my favourite Avon Kids shampoo last week when my granddaughters' came to stay and was looking for an alternative in Tesco, the L'Oreal Kids toiletries are starting to make the nine year old itch so I decided to try one of Tesco's own brands of shampoo for the girls'.

I found this Banana Dip shampoo in their 'budget brands' section and as it cost only 59p for a 500ml bottle I decided to give it a try, with the reasoning that if it were no good then I hadn't lost a lot of money and at least it could be used as a shower gel.

I needn't have worried as this shampoo is excellent and is sure to become a firm favourite on my bathroom shelves.

It smells beautifully of banana but has a slightly sweetened scent which sits nicely underneath the fruity aroma. The smell intensifies when I am rubbing it into their hair and soon my entire bathroom was enveloped in the lovely rich smell of bananas. The shampoo is a clear liquid which lathers up quickly into a thick and cleansing halo of bubbles.

Both of my elder granddaughters have long blonde hair and it left their hair looking so beautiful and shiny after washing. To be honest, my 12 year old granddaughter is starting to grow up now and is having problems with greasy hair as a lot of youngsters do. She shampoos her own hair and tells me she needed to use two lots of shampoo to get her hair squeaky clean, although as a typical 12 year old she isn't overly concerned about how her hair looks so I think it was the beautiful smell of the shampoo which led her to use a double amount!

The shampoo also rinses out easily using the shower head, I had to get my fingers right into my granddaughter scalp to remove all of the bubbles but I think I went a little overboard with the shampoo anyway so that was my fault.

When I used it to wash my baby granddaughters flyaway hair I used a very small amount and this rinsed out quickly and easily. Be aware though that this shampoo does not have a 'no tears' formula so be careful when using it on babies and small children, especially if your baby is used to letting the Johnsons shampoo slide onto their face. This was a one off that I used it for the baby as I was also out of Johnsons shampoo, but I must say she smelled beautiful for the rest of the day!

All of my granddaughters' hair looked shiny and was easily brushed after shampooing with this Banana Dip despite the fact that I didn't use any conditioner afterwards. Both of the elder girls' commented on how lovely their hair smelled all day after it had been washed and it was visibly more shiny and soft than when I use the Avon Kids range. The good thing is that even though their hair was left soft it was still managable and I was able to tie their hair up afterwards without a load of flyaway bits coming out of the bobble.

I shall certainly continue to buy this shampoo, I usually pay £2.50 for my Avon Kids shampoo which I think comes in a 250ml bottle - although to be fair it is very often on special offer and will then cost just £1.25. Still, it's a much smaller bottle than this Banana Dip shampoo and even on special offer is still double the price.

Summary: An excellent kids shampoo at an excellent price.

Sounds good value, my daughter is a banana addict and would probably like this!
