“ Brand: The Body Shop / Type: / Texture: Fluid / Type: Hair Balm / What it does: Smoothes, regenerates, „
I used to straighten my hair every single day in a battle against frizz, but recently I've relaxed this as my hair's getting a bit longer. However I still do straighten it sometimes and for this I need a product to protect my hair from the heat and, if possible, help to straighten my hair.
This Macadamia Straightening Balm from The Body Shop seemed to fit the bill. I buy a lot of products from this shop, mainly because of their fantastic discount codes and offers. This product costs £7 which I feel is very reasonable anyway when you think of similar products sold in stores such as Boots. However I think I paid about £3-£4 for it using a discount code, which is even better.
The product comes in a cream coloured sturdy bottle with a pump nozzle dispenser. It has a white label with a picture of macadamia nuts. The packaging fits in with other products from The Body Shop's haircare range.
The product is described as a lightweight, humidity-resistant balm which is meant to relax wavy and curly hair and reduce frizz. It is ideal for use with straightening irons. It contains macadamia nut oil and Community Fair Trade organic babassu oil, which provides around 150 female members of the COPPALJ co-operative in Brazil with a steady source of income.
To use the product, I squirt a very small amount into my hand - one or two squirts are enough - rub my hands together, and work the product through my hair. It has a pleasant subtle nutty scent that doesn't last on the hair, which could be a good or bad thing depending on your point of view. I then dry and style my hair as normal.
This product definitely has a positive effect on my hair. I can tell that it straightens more easily and remains straight for longer. I don't have to straighten it again later in the day and sometimes don't have to straighten it the next morning either (unless I wash my hair again). Also, my hair is definitely less frizzy and doesn't look so frightful after it's been raining.
My hair doesn't feel weighed down by this product although it does provide more coating than, say, a spray. Even the day after use, it hasn't made my hair greasy. It's hard to tell how well it's protecting my hair from heat, but I haven't noticed any particular damage on my hair so have no reason to believe it is less effective than any previous product I have used.
This bottle has lasted for months already and I only use a tiny amount at a time so it will last for a good while more. The only bad thing is that the bottle isn't see-through so it won't be easy to tell when it is finally used up.
Overall, I am very impressed with this product and would highly recommend it. It is good quality, ethical, does a good job and is great value for money as well as lasting ages.
I'm a male with kinky hair living here in the PHilippines with a very dry humid weather when the rainy season is over.I have tried many straightening balm I could say almost all the popular brands but they all fail to satisfy my expectations. At first I was hesitant to try this because based on reviews only people with wavy to curly hair have tried it.But since I'm desperate to find a product that will work best with my kinky hair which I get "relaxed" every three months I did'nt mind picking one.I shampooed, conditioned, then applied Macadamia balm on damp hair, blow dried for 3minutes then ironed it and then the surprise. My hair feels soft and considerably more natural looking than ever before. It's not perfect but for my hairtype to have this result I'm hoping they can improve this product or make one that suits kinky hair.Thank you Body Shop!
I will add to all the praise of the straightening miracle!
My hair is naturally very fine but wavey (including cow licks!) and so requires a lot of but is very prone to frazzling and split-ends!
In the past I have used several heat protection spritz sprays that are applied to dry hair always left my hair feeling plastic-y, dry and in spite of what i assumed, it was difficult to aim the product to evenly coat my hair.
The Body Shop's macadamia balm puts an end to this difficulty. It works much like a leave in conditioner and is best applied to towel dried/damp hair (apply to dry hair and you're likely to be left with a bit of residue). I use roughly 2 'pumps' per use on my long hair, rub between my hands and smooth through the length of my hair. This means I can be sure of an even coverage too! To me, the scent is reminiscent of rhubarb and custard sweets which is an added bonus. I've found I get the best results if I then blow dry and straighten my hair ASAP. The balm is so good that it is activated by the heat from blowdrying which means I don't have to spend as much time straightening which is all the better for it!
The end result shiney, healthy STRAIGHT hair (including cow licks!) that will not frizz. I took this product on holiday, where humidity would normally cause freshly strightenined hair to kink and fluff in seconds but I had no problems at all. This product even boasts UV protection which I think definitely helped while I was away.
In terms of price I'd say it was fairly pricey but my advice would be (particularly if you are Love your Body member) treat yourself on 20% off events and make the most of your £5 and £10 gifts by picking up this beauty!
The Body Shop Macadamia Straightening Balm
Description: Brand: The Body Shop / Hair Care Type: / A heat-activated and humidity-resistant, lightwieght balm, straightens hair for a smooth silky finish free from kinks and frizz!
Before I begin the actual review of this product, I think it is important to set the scene to allow you an understanding of exactly why I buy it and why it works so well.
I have highlighted blond hair which is prone to frizz if left to its own devices. This means that I have to straighten it daily and also blow dry it straight, to ensure that it has the best chance of being straight and smooth. Obviously, this takes its toll and dries out hair, so I try to use products to help replace the moisture and also to minimise the damage done by styling.
A 150 ml pump action spray will cost £7 and is described in the following way by the Body Shop;
"A high-performance, heat-activated and humidity resistant, lightweight creamy balm, which gives hair a long-lasting (up to 18 hours) kink and frizz-free finish. Gives protection from heat, UV rays and environmental stressors. Developed specifically for use with heated styling appliances such as straightening irons"
This product is really simple to use, you just spray it on then blow dry and straighten. As soon as you spayed this, you will notice the fragrance which is absolutely delicious. For those who are unfamiliar with the scent associated with macadamia nuts, it is sweet and reminds me slightly of bubble gum! It is a great fragrance and using this product not only straightens hair but leaves it smelling fab too.
The product helps you to achieve poker straight hair without frizz or static and also helps to prevent the damage that is inevitable with heated styling products. It definitely makes a difference to how glossy and straight my hair looks, and knowing that it protects too makes me keep going back and buying it.
This isn't the cheapest straightening balm that you can buy, but in my opinion, it is worth the extra money. You don't need to use much so it lasts well and smells so good that it feels like a treat. If you haven't tried this product before then why not give it a shot and see what you think!
Ingredients are as follows (taken from the Body Shop website);
Aqua (Solvent/Diluent), Cetyl Alcohol (Emulsifier), Cyclopentasiloxane (Skin-Conditioning Agent/Emollient), Propylene Glycol (Humectant), Polyquaternium-37 (Antistatic Agent), Glyceryl Stearate (Emulsifier), PEG-100 Stearate (Surfactant), Phenoxyethanol (Preservative), Tocopheryl Acetate (Antioxidant), Cetyl Esters (Emollient), Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate (Sunscreen), Dimethicone (Skin Conditioning Agent), Hydrogenated Polydecene (Skin Conditioning Agent), Hydrolysed Wheat Protein PG-Propyl Silanetriol (Hair & Skin Conditioning Agent), Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil (Skin-Conditioning Agent), Orbignya Oleifera Seed Oil (Emollient), Hydroxypropyltrimonium Hydrolysed Corn Starch (Hair Conditioning Agent), Parfum (Fragrance), Methylparaben (Preservative), Cetrimonium Chloride (Hair Conditioner), Laureth-23 (Emulsifier), Laureth-4 (Emulsifier/Surfactant), Butylparaben (Preservative), Ethylparaben (Preservative), Sodium Chloride (Viscosity Modifier), Isobutylparaben (Preservative), Propylparaben (Preservative), Benzyl Benzoate (Solvent), Sodium Hydroxide (pH Adjuster), Limonene (Fragrance Ingredient), Linalool (Fragrance Ingredient), Salicylic Acid (Preservative/Hair Conditioner).
As a bit of a 'Body Shop' obsessive, I must admit a great deal of bias here, but I adore the Macadamia Straightening Balm. Although I don't straighten my hair an awful lot, when the inevitable special occasion arises and my hair has decided to take on the characteristics of the 'Hair Bear Bunch' this stuff comes in handy!
It is rather expensive but the price is offset by how economical it is - a small blob in my hand covered my shoulder length hair of average thickness. As it is a fairly large bottle it should last for quite a while too.
The balm is very easy to use, just a small blob rubbed into your hair, and it does not make the straighteners emit that disconcerting burning smell. Once in the hair, it does leave a rather nice, not overly nutty, smell too.
Overall, it makes straightening easier, and gives a smooth finish with a hint of shine afterwards. Definately one to be recommended to your friends, although only on a flush day.
I have never really straightened my hair as I have a nice natural wave that is very easy to maintain and keep tidy, the reason I have never really straightened my hair is because it is very time consuming and it goes curly within minutes of leaving the house on a damp day.
So when I went to a friends body shop at home party I was less than impressed when I got given a sample of this Macadamia straightening balm, as I didn't straighten my hair enough to warrant using a product like this.
I have since washed and straightened my hair so I could review this product and I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised at how good this really is.
***** Macadamia Straightening Balm******
This straightening balm is ideal for humidity resistant hair that is exposed to heated appliances on a regular basis, this balm is best suited to curly or wavy hair but I feel that I would benefit any one who straightens on a daily basis as this stops the kinks appearing at the slightest sniff of moisture.
Not only will this help keep you hair straight but it also helps with the actual straightening process, usually I had to section my hair and do it piece by piece which took ages but now I can just grab chunks and it straightens really well without much effort.
This is comes in a 150ml bottle with a pump action dispenser that only emits enough product for one straightening application. To get the best out of this nutty smelling hair product you have to apply it to towel dried hair and then dry your hair and finish with the straighteners.
This smells really nice and the nutty scent lingers on your hair for hours after applying it, after you have finished your hair it will look and feel great.
Before getting this straightening balm I would never straighten my hair, but now I do it a couple of times a week as I love the condition and shine of my hair after it has been used.
The only big problem is that can make your hair very greasy if you use too much but you will only notice you have used too much after it has bee dried.
This is 8.50 a bottle which is very dear and if I had not got it free I would never have purchased it, however I am so glad that I tried this and I will continue to buy it after I have finished the bottle in a few months, I feel this will last that long as only small amounts are used at a time and I only straighten my hair two of three times a week.
I would defiantly recommend this to anyone who straightens their hair as the condition of dried out hair will certainly improve and your hair really stays straight.
Here I am going to review a product that has been sold by the body shop for the last few years. It is the Body shops Macadamia straightening spray.
I have become obsessed with my hair straighteners over the last six years and I am never ever known to leave the house with out my hair sleek and straight. I really don't know what I did before straighteners were invented, I do know I actually ironed it with a house hold iron a few times.
As my hair has become overstressed over the past few years, I always like products that help protect my hair. I have tried many straightening and heat protector sprays over the years and this is one that really stands out for me.
This macadamia straightening balm is designed to fight against humidity and protect your hair against any heat damage from the use of hair dryers and straighteners.
It is unlike any heat protection product I have ever used before, as it is a light weight cream balm and not is a spray mist form. This I found very strange as I usually had a product that you applied after you hair has been blow dried, but this is applied while wet and not right before straightening.
The first thing that struck me was the fact that you only need a small 5p peace size amount, and the smell is amazing it has a very nutty smell with it smelling sweet at the same time.
After this was used on my hair I got a silky smooth finish that didn't kink up and fuzz up.
I tested this for a night out and to my surprise, my hair stayed straight which has never happened before. Usually after I have had a few too many and at two in the morning my hair was frizzy and fluffy looking. Since trying this I always use it on a night out to keep my hellish hair poker straight.
This applied differently to any other straightening spray I have ever used, firstly you have to shampoo and condition your hair and then apply a small amount to your hairs mid length and ends.
You can also apply to the root area, but in my past experience your hair will go greasy very quickly, so I would just apply it to your hairs length.
After you have applied the product and combed it through, you blowdry your hair and then straighten it off with your straightening irons.
The packaging is very basic and comes in a cream coloured, 150ml plastic bottle. It has a pump action lid that allows a small amount of product to escape with one pump.
I feel that one pump is not enough product to do the job, so two pumps will give you the results you want.
As this is plastic it can be fully recycled, so I am also helping the environment.
The first bottle I had of this I got free for spending over 25.00 on the body shop website, but as I have been very impressed by this I have since been a got more and it has cost me 8.00.
You can get this from www.bodyshop.com but the UK website is not currently offering it, although it is still stocked in any body shop store.
I have also had a bottle of this from amazon.co.uk for 8.00 but postage costs did apply so I paid over the top for it, I now buy in store as I don't have shipping fees to pay.
The key ingredient is Babassu Oil part of the community trade program, this is a non oily moisturiser that is extracted from palm tress in South America and Brazil
UV protector is added to protect you hair from heat and the sun, which can really damage your hair. Wheat proteins are also added to hydrate, add gloss and shine to your locks.

COMMUNITY TRADE PROGRAMMES
As with all of the body shop products and cosmetics, this straightening balm helps towards one of many community trade programmes, which the body shop support.
The trade program associated with this macadamia straightening balm, is called Coppalj which is located in Brazil.
Babassu Oil being the ingredient in question, the body shop buys this oil and return local women are paid a fair wage, in which they deserve as they have fought against massive landowners for the past 30 years to win rights to extract the babassu nuts that are used in this macadamia nut product.
These women are now allowed to earn a fair living, thanks to the body shop buying these nuts from them.
My hair is hideous in humid wet weather, so this product has been a god send to me. If I didn't have it I would be devastated. Thanks to this my frizzy days are now over.
The application was a bit strange at first I was forgetting to put on the product when my hair was wet, but after a few times it became very normal to me and saves my spraying each individual hair strand that I want to straighten.
This is for curly wavy hair, I do have a slight wave to it but I feel this would work for anyone who went fuzzy with damp weather, and I think there are many of us that do.
As usual this body shop product is not tested on animals so it is suitable for vegetarians, which is another big bonus.
Some may think that 8.00 is expensive, but one bottle of this has lasted me up to four months and that is for my mid length hair, using this product everyday. Before this I would use protector sprays and these would only last six weeks and I would pay the same for them, so I am making a huge saving.
I have also been known to put a small amount on to my dry ends once my hair has been straightened, this acted as a serum and helped me out until I got a much needed hair cut to remove the dead ends.
A heat-activated and humidity-resistant, lightwieght balm, straightens hair for a smooth silky finish free from kinks and frizz!
