As a BzzAgent, I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to test products for free in return for spreading the word about them to others. (It's not a paid job, sadly, but a nice way to try stuff for free. Anybody interested can sign up online at www.bzzagent.co.uk)
One of my most recent campaigns has been for a range of Toni & Guy hair products. I was delighted to receive a huge box of full sized goodies, amongst them this 'Shine Gloss Serum', part of the Classic collection of hair care products. I have naturally curly, long and thick hair and the one hair care item that I rely on to try and tame the inevitable frizz that comes with it is a decent quality serum. It is no surprise that the serum was the first product that I tried and have been using on a daily basis for the past couple of weeks now.
Easily dispensed from a simple but stylish pump action bottle, the first thing that impressed me about the serum was the lovely soft and silky consistency, similar to the texture of a lubricant. It feels lovely on my palm as I warm it slightly for ease of application but, most importantly, I find it really easy to smooth over and through my long hair without leaving any feeling of stickiness or greasiness or any clumping at all. The bottle advises that an application should consist of one or two pumps of serum, applied primarily to the lengths and ends of the hair. Due to the length and thickness of my hair, I tend to use three or four pumps to give me a decent coverage but, unlike other brands, I don't feel that this leaves my hair looking or feeling lank at all and I really do need that extra application to tackle the frizz and to work in my dry, split ends.
Surprisingly, this serum is designed to be applied to dry, rather than freshly washed wet or damp, hair. I tend to rub a little bit of serum over my dry hair in the morning anyway, as I feel that this helps to control the frizz a little better, in addition to using after washing my hair. I've been mainly using this Toni & Guy hair in the mornings on my hair when it is dry but have also used it on my hair straight after washing it and felt that the results with both methods were equally successful. My hair is very frizzy, particularly around my hair line where shorter hairs tend to escape and look scruffy and unkempt, but this serum helps me to keep these in check and gives my hair a slightly shinier look and feel to it, helping me to feel more confident about my appearance. This can also be used in conjunction with other products from the Toni & Guy range to build up additional shine and smoothness, depending on hair type and style.
The other thing that I really liked about this serum is the fragrance. It has a really pleasant scent which is difficult to describe as it isn't fruity or floral at all, but is a lovely fresh 'hair product' kind of smell. This scent really appeals to me and leaves my hair smelling clean and fresh, without being too overpowering and clashing with any other scents on my hair or body.
The only issue that I have with this excellent quality serum is the high price. I was shocked to discover that this sells for over £7 (£7.19 to be precise) from Boots stores, for a relatively small 30ml bottle. I tend to use John Frieda's Frizz Ease serum which is around the £6 mark for a larger 50ml bottle. This difference in price would affect my choice, I have to admit, as I use serum on a daily basis and get through quite a lot due to my coarse, thick hair. The only saving grace is that the Toni & Guy hair care range does tend to be on a multi-buy promotion on a regular basis at Boots, so I will be tempted to stock up when I discover this to be on offer.
Despite my reservations about the full price, I can certainly vouch for this serum's quality and performance. This performs as well as Frizz Ease but has the added benefit of being used on dry hair as well as having a gorgeous consistency and a lovely fragrance. I will happily use this again and will keep my eye out for promotions, so this is one of the Toni & Guy products that I'm happy to recommend.
Summary: A lovely serum which is easy to apply and controls frizz effectively
