Advantages: Not expensive as I only bought a trial size, thankfully

Disadvantages: Knotted manky hair!

I have been rather impressed by a few things in the moderately priced Toni & Guy range in Boots, so when my boyfriend asked me to hunt him down a decent shampoo and conditioner I grabbed some of their 50ml minis on 3 for 2. I will be reviewing the product I bought for myself.

WHAT IS IT?

Toni & Guy Rapid Response Leave In Conditioning Gelee. What a weird name! It’s basically a leave in conditioner. It claims to be ‘the ultimate moisture boost to target dry, frizzy damaged areas.’ It also ‘restores hydration, helps protect from split ends and improves texture.’ So let’s put it to the test!

RAPID RESPONSE LEAVE IN CONDITIONING GELEE

I have loads of different shampoos and conditioners as I like to avoid a build up of one thing – and also it rations out my expensive stuff when I only use it occasionally (!) The main shampoo I use is Toni & Guy Insights Shine Addiction so I used it with this as I would be sure of what results the conditioner was giving. The container is much like the rest of the range. The minis are almost identical to the full size products apart from the top which is a mini screw top rather than a flip – both are easy to use with wet hands. The conditioner itself is in a silver sachet - like a Capri Sun drink - so it’s great for squeezing it out easily.

After shampooing and rinsing my hair I did my best to carefully comb my hair. This wasn’t easy as I normally comb it with conditioner in. However, this advised that it was to be used on towel dried hair, hence not in the shower. As usual, before I got out I rinsed my hair under the cold tap of the bath to get a bit of shine (this really does work!)

There is no point in using products on soaking wet hair as it dilutes them, so when I had towel dried my hair for about five minutes I felt it was damp enough to apply this but dry enough not to make it ineffective. It came out much like a normal conditioner – quite runny and sort of like a balm. It smelt exactly like Mega Depth in the same range, which smells like Gucci Rush the perfume (or just a general salon type smell). I smoothed it relatively easily through the ends of my hair and tried to distribute it evenly with a comb.

RESULTS

After about a minute I tried running my fingers through my hair and bits of it were stuck together! This was unusual as my hair’s normally really easy to manage when it’s wet. As I gradually let my hair dry it was getting more and more straw like at the ends. As my hair was previously highlighted the ends are dry sometimes and this seemed to emphasise the fact.

I tried drying it with the hair dryer and something surprising happened. It looked really good – nice and shiny and straight with slight definition between my layers, but it felt like straw and knotted up easily! It was also ridiculously static. I managed to tame the static by just smoothing it down with my hands once I had finished but my hair was still knotting up really easily.

PRICE AND AVAILABILITY

I believe this range is exclusive to Boots. I bought this on three for two so I paid £1.59 each for the first two and got this free. It works out at £1.06 each so I’ve not wasted too much money.

VERDICT

I really don’t know what is wrong with this. My hair actually looked quite nice when I had finished drying it but perhaps that was more down to the cold rinse I gave it and a decent blow drying job. My hair knots up too easily with this and therefore I don’t see how it could improve any split ends you had!

I was not impressed with this as it was too much effort for the results it gave. Try the rest of the range but avoid this!

Summary: A rubbish conditioner which didn't seem to condition although my hair LOOKED ok (!)

Forget Toni & Guy - next time try Paul Mitchell's range of products, Super Strong Conditioner for normal hair and you'll feel a difference straight away!
