Advantages: None

Disadvantages: Everything. Rude, bad hairdressers

For many years I went to Toni & Guy in Watford. I had a superb stylist who unfortunately left to go travelling in Australia. I tried another stylist. Oh dear bad move. I had long blonde highlighted hair which I'd spent a small fortune upkeeping over the years. The new stylist described what sounded like a funky pretty haircut. Yeah the end result not so funky and definitely not so pretty. She managed to cut the majority of the highlights out and I was left with layers which started at my eyes. (This was about 5 years ago - I would probably get away with the cut these days. Maybe) I vowed not to get my hair cut there again but went back to my usual colourist to start the highlights again. I've never managed to get the same colour back again but instead ended up with cheap looking yellow hair. I swore under no circumstances would I ever set foot in a Toni & Guy salon again.

However a few years later I find myself relocating to the North East and without a regular hairdresser. The Christmas just gone I was going to my partners work party which was black tie so decide I would get my hair cut and coloured. Where to go though? A friend recommended T & G in Durham and with a lack of any other advice on salons I went there. At this time I had dark hair with a few thin caramel streaks. Having a Morticia streak of grey I have it dyed dark brown and then comes the few highlights. Easy enough. The colourist advised me that a few copper streaks would lift my skin tone and give me a bit more colour so I agreed to let her proceed. Again OH DEAR. Instead of cover the hair in a brown tint and a few copper streaks she covered ALL my hair in a wishy washy pale red dye. I was horrified at the results, I looked like a corpse it made me look so pale which I brought to the colourists attention. She then put a few blonde streaks in which turned yellow. The dreaded yellow again. The stylist appeared to understand the cut I wanted however it turned out nothing like the picture I had shown her. It wasn't a bad cut, just a tad dull. I'd been in there all afternoon and by this stage it was closing time. I complained as never before and they agreed I could come in the following weekend to have the colour changed. I explained I was going to a black tie event on the Wednesday and the following weekend wouldn't do. After much haggling they agreed to do fit me in Tuesday afternoon as if they were doing me a huge favour. A half day off work!. Another girl did my hair this time and it turned out quite nice. Thank goodness!. She was the only nice one I'd seen there. As with many other reviewers I found the staff rude obnoxious with a false sense of "coolness". For some reason this includes the receptionist with the most hideous red hair (again false sense of cool which in fact borders on ridiculous looking - surely the first person you see when you go in the door should have a hair style which instils confidence to make you think yeah I've come to the right place ???)

Since this disaster I've been getting my hair cut in another country that I visit often. It's now a nice blonde colour. I am going to a party this weekend in London and thought I really need my roots done. None of the local hairdressers recommended had available appointments so I ended up going back to Toni & Guy in Durham. What was I thinking I ask myself. For some reason I was supposed to have a male colourist but ended up with a female (doesn't matter who I just thought it unusual to have the person changed when you arrive). I breathed a sigh of relief when she dried my hair. It looked good, she had lightened it up a bit. It was golden despite my other hairdresser putting the brightest colours in - due to the amount of colour already in due to the red disaster. But when I tucked it behind my ears I realised my relief was short lived for underneath were loads of dark patches obviously missed. I tie my hair back during the week and knew it would bug me every day. So I pointed out the patches and after mucho huffing and puffing she put a few more foils in. When she dried it it looked much better, I spotted her taking out the straghteners and said oh no thanks its ok as it is. She persuaded me to let her just run through it quickly.EEK she dragged it through slowly and with force, I could hear and feel it burning. It looked nice and sleek when I came out but when I washed it the next day the ends were all broken and singed. I think she did it out of spite as I complained about missed patches. It is so dry throughout which is probably from the colour but I'm sure the length she left the straighteners on my hair didn't help as there are now singed bits. PLUS I still have dark roots!! I'm going to have to get a lot of it cut off now. But I tell you something it won't be by the hands of Toni and Guy in Durham! DON'T GO THERE.

Summary: Durham T & G, rude, unprofessional you leave with a hideous monstrosity they call a style

I completely agree about Toni n Guy in Durham. One of the reasons you don't object to paying so much is that you're supposed to get a good service. When my friend asked for a coffee at Durham, they told him to go over the road to Costa! To be fair the one in Preston's pretty good usually, although once I was unhappy with my colour and when they added more highlights (after I'd complained) they tried to charge me for the extra colour! Naturally I refused. Good review anyway x

Hiya! Welcome to Dooyoo. Really good opinion there but you do need to balance it with some basics - e.g. how much did you pay for all these colourings, cuts etc. What is customer service like other than getting your hair done - did they give you a drink/magazine... Things like that will be more helpful as it will give an idea of what they can expect if they do use T&G.

Great review, for a company who really do think they are a cut above the rest, all i have ever heard about them is bad hair stories.
Def be sticking to my mums old method of sticking the pudding bowl on my head and chopping around that!
