Advantages: Good customer service, very upbeat environment, interesting techniques used.

Disadvantages: The high prices.

I am due for a haircut soon, and it has made me think of Toni and Guy's.

I'm, not sure if I'll be going to them this time, for around £40 a snip, it's not really something I like to be spending on just for a trim. I have basic straight long dark hair, so really, unless I'm going to change it or have something special done I think it's money better spent elsewhere.

The last time I visited, I think I was having a bad hair day and thought I looked like someone from Halloween with all this hair. I just wanted it all cut off short - to be like one of those hip, trendy models that you see with a chic modern bob. Seduced by this thought, I popped in just for that.

I stepped in and approached the desk to ask if they had any immediate spaces available. They had, and so I was led through their jazzy salon to one of their starry black seats in front of a large make-up mirror. To my surprise, they offered me a drink. I declined politely, I felt as if I was mistaken for some pop star. Nevertheless, I was asked to wait for a few minutes for my designated hairdresser to finish off with her other client and she would be with me soon for a consultation.

During the few minutes that I waited, I had plenty of opportunity to look around - all the staff were dressed stylishly in black and many had some very funky haircuts. Young, energetic talents raring to dig their scissors into some hair - it felt like walking into the rehearsal room of some stage school. There was music pumping quietly in the background and TV screens flashing images of the models strutting on catwalk show. I just had a sense that this place was like a fashion house haven, a place where creativity bleeds its heart.

Back to reality, the hairdresser had finished and was approaching me. Looked at my hair and asked me take my pony tail down. Was I sure I wanted it cut short? She asked knowingly. She suggested a trim, leaving a mid length of hair, if I had wanted to go further I could always have it done later. She suggested layers to take out some of the weight as I had quite thick hair and then gradual shorter lengths around the face to make it softer and frame it. She skilfully starting cutting.

Unlike many of the others, she was fairly quiet but focussed on my hair. It was very interesting watching her cut my hair, it seemed as she was in another dreamy world - twisting, shearing and snipping away in ways that I had not seen used before. She seemed to pay a lot of attention to detail with my hair, checking the lengths and respectful of my requirements.

I wasn't made to sit in silence, of course, every now and again she would check I was ok with the cutting, and then at other times she would give me some hints on how I could manage my hair better and also I think she also tried to persuade away from the idea of coming back for the short bob look!

Having had only a trim, I didn't really need my hair fully blow-dried, but as it was already booked in, I thought I would perhaps get some tips on drying my hair. Watching this process was also an eye opener. From just watching the way she blow-dried my hair I learnt how it was possible to keep the hair lying flat and causing less frizz.

Once my hair had been thoroughly dried and sprayed with shiner, it was time to go. The hairdresser politely showed me to the reception desk and handed me over to the reception staff. The bill came to a whopping £48, - apparently; the lady was some kind of director stylist, a senior ranked member and therefore charged a higher price. I was happy with the service so there were no complaints.

Half a year later, my hair has grown out and it has still kept its style. you can really see the fine cutting of the layers.

However, my hair is getting a bit long and it's time for trim, but unfortunately, I won't be having it done here, needless to say, perhaps to save it until a special occasion comes up.

Compared to the other hairdressers that I have used, Toni and Guy's are definitely a unique experience.

Thanks for reading. xx
