Advantages: Can change your whole appearance and confidence for the better

Disadvantages: Or rob you blind for an average cut and colour.

Five years ago, I won £50 worth of Toni and Guy Vouchers. I both curse and praise the day as it has introduced me to a new and exciting (but very expensive) world of hairdressing.

My brother's wedding prompted me to go forth and use said vouchers. Being a little more than the price of a cut, I went the full hog and got three shades of highlights to boot.

To cut a long story short. I came out a changed woman, looking fabulous and feeling enlightened. It cost a staggering £90 but as only £40 of this was out of my own pocket it was well worth every penny.

When, up until now, I had been paying around £3.00 a cut - it was quite a leap. How does one ever go back, having experienced such pampering?

So, I saved and saved and battled to justify the expense - but I did go back. This time, the colour wasn't quite so good, as, although I'd asked for three colours - there were only two mixing bowls being used and in anyone's book that doesn't add up. The girl seemed in a bit of a rush and wasn't prepared to stray from her tried and tested highlights are highlights formula.

No-one offered me sparkling flavoured water either.

Hmmm. Not quite so good - and at £80 (cut and half-head highlights) that's quite some dissapointment.

Next up, I heard that you could be a model for Toni and Guy students for free - by booking in advance from the adverts in the paper. I turned up, stayed the three long and drawn out hours, but came away with a really rather splendid cut! Although there were doubts half way through when nerves got the better of me.

So, a few months later I went again; got a non-english-speaking boy and came out pale and drawn from sheer terror as he hacked unevenly at my crowning glory. This cut looked as free as it indeed was. The trouble was that due to the language barrier, the tutors words were lost on him. When she said (with actions) 'you must always cut like this - a
nd never, ever, like this' - he only took in the actions and promptly did the first way followed by the second - just as he had seen.

I've not been back.

My hair is now approaching two feet in length. On the positive side, this means the differing lengths either side are proportionally less noticeable.

Right now, I can't afford the posh cut and can't risk the freebie. there's also the matter of 8 inches of dark brown regrowth before the blondie bits start - pushing my luck in the fashion stakes.

I have come to the conclusion that the whole industry is a lottery. You stand a better chance statistically if you re-mortgage your house for a cut, but, when it comes down to it, you are in the hands of fate.

My advice is try it once. If you strike gold, get their name; remember their face and book early to avoid dissapointment.

Agree with everything you say - T&G are not that great, I've found the haircuts to be OK but the service terrible, I'm not going to pay 40-60 quid to sit in a chair and be ignored, I want some conversation!

I also had a disasterous cut at the training salon - bob which turned into more of a Joan-of-Arc pageboy. And a T-shirt got ruined because of all the hair that got stuck in it, it was too itchy to wear.
I was a student then, though, so it was a relief to get such a cheap haircut. I can laugh about it now!!

I do mine myself, can be a bit awkward sometimes but If I don`t like it then I`ve only got myself to blame, plus it doesn`t cost me a penny. :0)

Completely agree with you - any hairdressers is a gamble regardless of the name (which is why I try to go as little as possible).
