Advantages: Stylish Place, Nice Service, Good Haircuts

Disadvantages: Pricey

I have always had long hair. Meaning I don’t get it cut that much, I usually get a trim from some girly parlour but that’s about it. Anyway when my mates and me got to college they all went off and got brand-new looks. New hair, new make-up, new clothes the whole shebang. Leaving little old me with my long hair and pink dresses. I was the one who was known for being the same. I was still as girly as ever but they had brand new hair, which made them stand out. Big time.

One mate ended up getting highlights, another ended up getting all her locks chopped off for a Kat Slater look and this made me feel odd so I made a pact to get my hair done!

In my area there aren’t that many designer salons and the only decent one I can think of is the salon Toni & Guy. I always walked past for like a month saying I’m going to get my haircut but I never did, I needed motivation!

And I think I found it. Every time I walked past I would see the fittest hairdresser cutting peoples hair and that was enough for me, off I went to book an appointment with him. He wasn’t in the day I decided to book the appointment but there I was explaining to some other girl what he looked like and she booked my appointment, I have to admit I was more nervous about meeting Mr. Hairdresser than my haircut!

~~THE HISTORY OF TONI & GUY~~

Francesco Mascolo lived in Italy but moved to London in 1956. Mascolo worked in a salon as a hairdresser and also trained his oldest sons in the family business of the hairdressing. The eldest sons Guiseppe and Gaetano changed their names to Toni and Guy and with their father they opened their first salon in Clapham, South London in 1963. They then opened three more salons in South London and the other brothers joined them as hairdressers.

One of the brothers Bruno, made his own styles and published them, which gave Toni & Guy a lot of publicity, they also toured around the UK promoting the
ir styles.

In 1976 Francesco Mascolo unfortunately passed away.

In 1981 more salons were opened up in Los Angeles, Hawaii, the Far East and Canada. In 1985 and 86 Anthony won the British hairdresser of the year award. He won two years in a row.

More and more salons were opening in the world, in Japan, America, South Africa and loads more which meant Toni & Guy was growing and growing.

Their popularity grew with their edgy fashionable haircuts and this helped them become one of the best hairdressing salons in the world.

~~THE CONSULTATION~~

When I arrived in the salon all the girls spent around five minutes trying to work out who was meant to be cutting my hair. It was confusing and nerve racking but then they realised ‘his’ name was written there and they told him he was going to be cutting my hair.

They then told me he was a trainee and it would only cost me £10. I was shocked, what the hell was I about to do? My first major haircut and it was in the hands of a trainee. A very handsome trainee. Ok I was game.

I got extremely nervous when he approached me but I have to say he made me feel so calm and relaxed because this was a big deal for me, I was getting my long locks cut! Aarrggh!

At first he introduced himself, told me his name and showed me pictures of some layered hairstyles. I said I wanted long layers as I didn’t have to guts to go short but he convinced me to get a graduation cut, which is like a spiky bob cut. I wasn’t really listening, as I was too busy looking at his gorgeous face. I honestly thought when I would get in to the chair he would just give me long layers, boy was I wrong.

He said he thought the graduation cut would suit my face shape and that I should go for a change. I thought he was right but I felt dead nervous about this. He then agreed on the graduation cut and explained he wouldn’t dare mess up my hair, even th
ough he was a trainee, he knew exactly what he was doing. This definitely made me feel loads better.

~~THE STYLE BOOK~~

At first I have to admit I was totally clueless as to what kind of style I wanted. So the hairdresser took out a book of hair styles and they had loads of different styles to choose from, I decided to look at layered styles and there were so many I was spoilt for choice but I didn’t even get to look twice at the book as the hairdresser made the decision for me, to get a graduation cut.

I recommend looking at the stylebook first if you aren’t too sure as this can be very helpful as there are plenty of styles to choose from.

~~THE PRODUCTS USED~~

At first the hairdresser explained that my hair was quite dry at the bottom so he washed it with some Tigi shampoos and a conditioner. He washed them out and began to towel dry my hair. They smelled really lovely and already my hair felt loads nicer even though it was still wet!

My hair became quite dry so he kept spraying something called ‘shine spray’ in my hair to keep it frizz-less. I thought this product was superb as it really did keep my hair tame and added texture, made it softer and shinier. All you have to do is spray it from the middle of your hair to the roots and brush through, it works wonders for frizzy hair and ive recommended it to all my friends.

As a finishing product he used something called shine junkie which gives your hair texture and makes it shine, similar to shine spray but unlike it, it smells lush, like orange bubblegum. After he put this in, I just kept smelling my hair, it smells lovely.

By the way I ended up going back a few days later and buying ALL the products he used in my hair!

~~THE ACTUAL CUT~~

One thing that bothered me was the even before I got my hair washed the hairdresser cut a large amount of my hair off. I was slightly confused but he said it would b
e much easier to give me a graduation cut if my hair was short to begin with.
After that he began to cut it off, firstly he cut a lot of my hair off and after that began to slowly add style and spiky ends to it.

It took quite a while but I didn’t mind AT ALL (come on a fit hairdresser cutting my hair) so I was alright, my mate was quite angry, as she had to wait for ages.

Since he was only a trainee he had the get the manager to check my hair and I saw from her expression she was happy with the cut so he did a great job, but to be honest I was dying at first as my hair was too short, they all said it suited me and made me feel a lot better. I don’t know why but I kept looking in the mirror and girlishly squealing ‘what the hell!’.

~~THE SERVICE~~

The girls who worked at Toni & Guy were very polite and I even became good mates with the hairdresser and he calmed me down by talking about music, movies, and life in general. Because I was quite nervous about the cut he made me relax.

He even offered me a drink, a hot chocolate, water etc. I had hair in my mouth (eeww) so I declined the offer but I thought it was good that they offered my mate a drink too as she was waiting for me to get my hair done.

The people there are very polite and I think that’s what makes Toni & Guy even better. Some hairdressers are quite snooty but the nicer ones make up for that.

I was offered to read magazines such as Vogue, Cosmo or Marie Claire but I turned them down so I could continue my conversation with Mr. Hairdresser.

~~THE PLACE ITSELF~~

What I love about Toni & Guy is the fact that it is so nice looking. Inside the place is set out so neatly and the less is more theory comes to mind. Its really modern looking and I just love the way everything is set out. It’s got a really posh feel to it, and I love the display posters they have.

The music playing
in this place is always up to date. You can expect to hear songs from the Ibiza chill out albums, I remember hearing lovely chill out songs, which made me relax big time. You can expect to hear artists like Roger Sanchez, Kylie Minogue, Riva and other dance tunes with a chill out feel to them.

I know this is silly but this place always smells so lovely.

The way the products that are on sale are set out is just really neat and stylish. It makes everything look even better. The layout of the products are neat and they are set out behind the till.

~~PRICES~~

To be honest in a way I think Toni & Guy are really over-rated. Their prices are quite ridiculous, but the reason I think I am so happy with them is because I got a really nice haircut for £10.

With a stylist a cut and blow dry would cost £26 for women and £22 for men.
With a senior stylist a cut and blow dry would cost £30 for women and £26 for men.
With a premier stylist a cut and blow dry would cost £32 for women and £28 for men.
With a creative director a cut and blow dry would cost £36 for women and £32 for men.

Here’s a price list of other hair treatments.

Highlights - £60
Half Head - £45
Fashion Colours - £35
Tint Re-growth - £40
Pre-Lightener and toner - £60
Natural Glossing - £30
Permanent Waving - £60

Prices vary in different salons as I have noticed the salon in my town is much cheaper than one in say London.
I know this is sly but if you want a good haircut for not so much go and try to find a trainee who has been training for quite a while, that way your more likely to get a really decent cut for £10.

~~WHY GO THERE~~

Well this is my personal opinion but when you get a haircut some people want to get a completely new look, others just want a simple trim. I think Toni & Guy are great for makeovers so if you want to get a new spiky do’ go here, but if you w
ant a simple cut I’d recommend somewhere much cheaper.

Toni & Guy are notorious for their spiky, different hairstyles and this definitely separates them from other hair salons. I think this is what I love about them, they create their own styles.

I think this place is perfect if you want to treat yourself with a lovely new haircut but I recommend you go there after a while as it really makes you appreciate the cut.

I have to say I haven’t seen many men in their as you’d probably only want to get a simple trim and that would cost quite a bit! But a few of my male friends have got their hair done here and I have to say they do come out a lot more stylish than they were.

All the employees that work there have stylish hair, its like wow I love your hair, I didn’t see one employee with average hair, every style was fresh and different.

~~THE WEBSITE~~

http://www.toniandguy.co.uk

The website is in typical Toni & Guy style. It consists of flash and is very stylish and modern. It’s simple but very chic.

They have a list of all the Toni & Guy salons in the world except the one in my town of course as it only recently opened.

I really like the style gallery that they have on their website. It is basically a collection of stylish haircuts, which you can look at, print out and take to your local Toni & Guy salon and they will give you the cut. They have a lot of different looks, some for long hair, some for the shorter styles so there is definitely a style for everyone in this section. They’ve not only got styles for women but do have different styles for men also. Also I do know that the style gallery changes as new styles are introduced into the hairdressing world.

The Toni & Guy product list is really helpful, it has a list of all the products that they sell in their salons and selected boots store. They have four different heading, shampoos, con
ditioners, finishing, and styling and in each category they have a list of these types of products.

One section that I love on the site is the Toni & Guy history, it shows hairstyles from the 60’s right up until today. They are quite different and some styles might actually remind you of the styles you once sported (tut tut).

For budding hairdressers there’s a section on Toni & Guy training courses and how to achieve the certificate they give. It’s quite a helpful section especially if you are interested in doing the course. Also there is another section on how to get a career in hairdressing at Toni & Guy.

~~OVERALL~~

I love this place and I have to say I will be going back. My hair is quite short so I wont be returning there anytime soon but I know when I need a re-style I will go back to the same hairdresser. I think if you are planning to get a haircut don’t do what I did and go for a trainee unless you cant afford to have a proper stylist, luckily my trainee turned out to be brilliant so I was lucky but I don’t think this will always be the case. Plus if you are happy with the haircut make sure you get the name of the stylist so they can work their magic on your hair once again.

I like the fact that they have colour technicians so it isn’t just the hairdressers who are dying your hair; this is really professional I think.

I am really happy with my haircut and I get loads of compliments, the hairdresser knew exactly what he was doing. He knew the haircut would suit my face shape and I am so glad he convinced (or was it took over) me to get the shorter layers. People say it’s a typical Toni & Guy haircut as it has the spiky edge to it so that’s cool.

I have to admit though my brother got a haircut from here and it cost him like £26 for a little cut, not worth it for him so I think this place would be better for p
eople with long hair, and if your brave enough to try those trainees like I did, go for it!
