Hairspray is a must for me and like many other products I have been searching ages for the perfect one. It just so happens that Tresemme salon finish extra hold was on offer at superdrugs so being the bargain hunter I am I couldn't let this offer slip away, especially after my cousin was raving about this product to me before.
What does the product do?
This hairspray, like every hairspray is meant to give hair that extra hold and keep your hair style intact for the entire day. Tresemme's hairspray claims to give "extra hold" this means that hair should be perfect and stay neat for the whole day. Most products claim to do amazing things but never really live up to their expectations.
My personal opinion
Personally I think that this hairspray has definitely lived up to it's expectations as it left my hair staying perfectly styled throughout the whole day out of the many days which I have used it. From straight to curly I can guarantee that this hairspray has left my hair looking great! I was so pleased that I managed to get 3 for the price of 1 as this hairspray has become a personal favourite of mine.
One secret that I have to getting extra volume in my hair is spraying a bit of Tresemme's salon finish extra hold hairspray onto my hands and going deep into my roots lifting it up and down, this creates lift making you hair look slightly more voluminous.
Overall I really like this product as I feel it does an amazing job and unlike most products live us to it's expectations.
Item: Tresemme Extra Hold Hair Spray
Bought in: Superdrug
This spray comes in a tall black aerosol tin. Black is the standard packaging colour of the Tresemme products so it is quite easy to identify the makers of the spray. The tin has quite a lot of text across it but the lid is just plain black plastic. The name Tresemme is written in white text across the top of the tin. The front of the tin also advises that this gives "Extra firm hold. All day humidity resistance" and that it is of "professional quality". There is a numbering scale of dots across the tin too and this bottle is level 4 out of 5 possible levels of hold. The back of the bottle has the standard ingredients details and directions for use. This is quite an attractive tin and does look like something that you would see in a hair salon. The button you press to get the spray out is actually really small, when you take the lid off, this just looks different than usual but spray just as well as any thicker button on a spray.
The blurb on the back of the tin and their catch line:
"From our origins in salons, we have always been driven by a simple truth: every woman deserves to look fabulous without spending a fortune."
"Tresemme - Professional, affordable."
Does this give you an extra firm hold?
It advises you to "Spray section by section, 10-12 inches away from hair. For stronger hold, layer more spray exactly where you want it. For ultimate body and fullness flip hair upside down and spray all over." So when I give my hair an overall spray it does give a good level of hold and somewhat creates a "net" over your hair that if you are not careful can create a "Lego hair" look!! Haha I usually get my hair in to the shape I want it to stay in all say then lightly spray this over the full area. This sets the hair in place and means that you don't have any rogue bits flying loose the second you get out in the wind and rain. I have tried the "For ultimate body and fullness flip hair upside down and spray all over" technique but as the spray is so strong this really just resulted in me looking like Edward Scissor Hands as the hair stayed in the pace it was when it was sprayed and was pretty much all standing straight out from my head!!! Haha so full marks for hold but zero for look!
This smells vaguely of marzipan and of course has the standard alcohol/chemical hair spray sent behind it. You can smell this strongly when you first spray it so and it is overpowering so do make sure you are in a ventilated room. Once it settles on your hair is becomes less noticeable but you can smell it again once you brush your hair.
This is a good hair spray that really does give you a firm hold so be aware of that when you pick the strength you need. I'm giving 5 stars as it literally does what it says on the tin :-)
I first used Tresemme Extra Hold Hairspray when I picked up a can which was on offer for only £1.99 in Home Bargains. I have since been back there but these cans are not available any more, however, I was so impressed with this particular hairspray that I now pay the full price £3.99 from Tescos. I buy the larger 500ml sized can.
I generally quite like the Tresemme range and until I had found this particular can of hairspray, I wasn't even aware that the company made hairspray as part of the range - I had thought they simply made shampoos and conditioners.
I have quite fine hair but it's now got to the stage where it's longer than it has been for some years. As such, I need a hairspray which I can rely on and one which is going to keep my style in place for as long as possible. This Extra Hold spray boasts that it will hold a style in place for up to 24 hours. I can vouch for the fact that this is excellent at keeping my style in place, whether I am putting my hair up in a clip or whether I am just leaving it down and loose for the day. Though it's strong, it's not the type of spray which make my hair feel too 'set' or hard and it certainly doesn't make my hair look unnatural.
The spray comes out of the can in a nice fine mist which settles evenly all over my hair. It dries quite quickly and I love the fact that it doesn't give my hair a matt effect, in fact I'd say my hair looks a bit shinier whenever I use this spay. It brushes out well at the end of the day and it never leaves that horrible build up on my hair which you can sometimes get with cheaper hair sprays.
It smells nice too, a but like a body spray, really, rather than a hairspray and as the can is so large and I don't need to use a lot of it, it lasts me for absolutely ages. If anyone want to know the full list of ingredients in this spray, they are as follows:
Octylacrylamide/Acrylates/Butylaminoethyl Methacrylate Copolymer , Vinyl Caprolactam/VP/Dimethylaminoethyl Methacrylate Copolymer , Benzophenone-4 , PEG-12 Dimethicone , Aminomethyl Propanol , Aqua (Water) , Geraniol , Amyl Cinnamal , Citronellol , Butylphenyl Methylpropional , Linalool , Hexyl Cinnamal , Limonene , Parfum (Fragrance) .
The can itself is black and quite sleek and stylish looking and I am pleased to say that I am so glad I discovered this hairspray when I did as it is definitely one of the best ones I have ever used - even surpassing the Elnett range, in my opinion.
It is suitable for all hair types and I'd recommend it to anyone.
I have always worn my hair quite short as I find this much easier and quicker to deal with than other styles. I am lucky that I have quite thick hair which is reasonably easy to style. At the present time it is quite short at the sides and back but has a bit more length and volume at the top. I never use a brush or a comb on my hair but just use my fingers to dry and style it and also to 'titivate it' during the day.
I first started to use Tresemme last year when I went on holiday and needed a small can which I could put in my hand luggage. I bought the Extra Hold Tresemme from Tesco in 100ml and think I paid £2.25 at the time. The can is black aluminium so it fully recyclable and measures about six inches tall. It tells you that it is Extra Hold and Salon Finish and has been awarded 4 out of 5 for hold by Tresemme. It also says on the front of the can that it has 24 hours climate control and humidity resistance. The can is extremely flammable and there is a warning on it that inhaling it deliberately can be harmful or fatal.
There are various other strength hairsprays in the range which are awarded 3,4 or 5 stars out of five for their holding power, this particular one is 4 which I would say is mid range and is suitable for most hair styles. I have used the other strengths but personally find this is the best one for me.
On the back of the can it tells you that the all important ingredients are Alcohol Denat. , Butane , Isobutane , Propane , Octylacrylamide/Acrylates/Butylaminoethyl Methacrylate Copolymer, Vinyl Caprolactam/VP/Dimethylaminoethyl Methacrylate Copolymer , Benzophenone-4 , , Aminomethyl, Propanol , Parfum (Fragrance), Peg-12, Dimethicone Vinyl, Caprolactam/vp/Dimenthylaminoethyl, Methacrylate Copolymer, Linalool, Limonene, Benzophenone-4, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Amyl Cinnamal, Hexyl Cinnamal, Citronellol and Geranoil.
The black plastic lid clicks off and there is a spray nozzle which I find is easy to depress and even though this is a small can it delivers quite a powerful spray. I always give it a shake before use to mix all the ingredients up to give the best results. I have never had the spray stick or stop spraying however long I am using it for even when spraying upside down to reach the back of my head.
The spray is a clear mist and to me smells a cross between traditional salon spray and a sort of rich fruity smell and is quite pleasant. I have never experienced any dripping or leaking from the can.
When I have washed my hair I will towel dry it and then put my head down and spray for about 5 seconds whilst rubbing it through with the spray. I find that this gives my hair a good 'base' for me to go on and style it. I then use the hair dryer and with my fingers I will mould my hair into the required shape. When my hair is about half way dry I will sometimes give it another spray for a few seconds just mainly on the top area if it is not going exactly the way I want. Then when I am happy with the result I give it a quick spray all over and just tease into place with my fingers. This is my routine for most mornings when I am going to work however at the weekends if I am going out I will take a bit more time and use more spray at the finish.
Tresemme suggest that you spray in layers starting at the roots for added height but personally I don't need to do this for it to work for me. Another tip on their website is to spray onto clothes to keep them static free which I haven't actually tried. I have used hand or body cream on my legs when I have put on a pair of trousers and they cling to my legs but would try this to see if it did actually work if it happened again.
If I touch my hair I can feel it is 'supported' but not overly sticky or stiff and still feels soft to the touch. The spray dries almost instantly and is invisible to the eye, and I have never found it to look wet or shiny. I feel confident that my hair is held in place and have never had any bits or flakes falling off. As I said earlier I never brush my hair with a hairbrush but when I have gone out straight from work a quite brush through with my fingers is sufficient to dislodge any hold that is there. I find that I can do a quick restyle with my fingers and just give it a quick spray all over and this will last all night.
I can honestly say that my hair still stays in place when the weather is hot (or when I am having one of my frequent power surges!!!) and I have also been out for short periods in the rain and it hasn't affected my hair or made it frizzy.
I know some people will use mousse to style their hair, but I generally find mousse too sticky and can make my hair look a bit lank and greasy but love this spray as it is light but really keeps my hair in place. I never find any residue in my hair and it washes out very easily.
It comes in the 100ml size and a larger 500ml size. I usually buy the larger size but the 100ml is great to pop in your handbag or to take on holiday without taking up too much space. At the moment you can get the 100ml size from Superdrug for £1.83 and the 500ml size from Boots for £4.69 (which is also on the 2 products for £7 so works out at £3.50 each.) I would say that the large can lasts me about three months and the smaller one about the same as I don't use this one every day like the larger size.
I would definitely recommend this product as it really does exactly what it says on the tin and as it comes in the smaller size you can try it without forking out too much money. It is easy to use, has a nice smell and keeps my hair in place without looking artificial in any way.
.......5 out of 5 Dooyoo stars from me.......
Tresemme Extra Hold Hairspray.
I have used this hairspray for as long as I can remember and have always found it to be absolutely fantastic. I also like the scent which is always a bonus. The fragrance is a fresh and clean smell and is not as overpowering as some other products on the market. I have recently been to the hairdresser and the topic of hair products arose, the hairdresser didn't rate the tresemme range, even going so far as to say it isn't very good for your hair. I however do not agree, I really like and rate the whole tresemme range and although the products are fairly highly priced in comparison to regular hair products on the market, I do prefer to purchase them. They are considered to be a profession range of products and compared to other professional hair products on the market they are not really too expensive and the results are worth the price tag.
I do have very thick heavy hair and styling can be a challenge but this hairspray holds my hair in place regardless of the style I'm also impressed by the length of time the style holds in place when using this product. The product claims to hold for 24 hours and have climate and humidity resistance, but obviously depending on how elaborate the style and hair type, my hair remains in place and neat for eight plus hours which is fantastic for days and evenings out. The product does not leave your hair sticky and can be brushed when dry to enhance the style. If used on damp hair it does make the hair go quite stiff but is easily brushed out. The product does not make my hair dry or greasy and the following day after a brush my hair could easily be restyled without the need to wash out the previous days product because my hair still feels soft and clean. Many products I have used leave a horrible residue in my hair and this product does not. The hairspray is also quick drying making styling easier and the product is more practical.
I try and purchase the product when they are special offer and too be honest the offers are very good...quite often 2 for £5, which is great. The hairspray I buy I 500ml large can and usually retails from £4-£5 depending on where to purchase it. The product is widely available in most supermarkets however I tend to buy mine most frequently from Tesco or Wilkinson's just purely for practicality for me.
I have used this for many styles and have always been extremely impressed and would definitely recommend.
The tresemme hair styling range has three levels of hold firm, extra and freeze, and this come in as extra so mid range, but should you require a different level the options are there.
The ingredients are Alcohol Denat. , Butane , Isobutane , Propane , Octylacrylamide/Acrylates/Butylaminoethyl Methacrylate Copolymer , Vinyl Caprolactam/VP/Dimethylaminoethyl Methacrylate Copolymer , Benzophenone-4 , PEG-12 Dimethicone , Aminomethyl Propanol , Aqua (Water) , Geraniol , Amyl Cinnamal , Citronellol , Butylphenyl Methylpropional , Linalool , Hexyl Cinnamal , Limonene , Parfum (Fragrance) .
The can is about 25cm tall and made of black steel with fuchsia pink and white writing on it and the can is recyclable which I always think is an added bonus. The can is flammable so I wouldn't keep it near an open flame or on a window ledge in direct sunlight.
Definitely worth a try and I do rate it highly even if the price is a little steep for me as I am usually very frugal.
I have quite a fondness for the Tresemme range of products. My hairdresser claims they are not as good as they used to be, but I have noticed their products are also a little cheaper than they used to be, so maybe this is a benefit. I was unsure about buying this at first. I'm a bit of a cheapskate when it comes to beauty products- like I've said in previous reviews, I'll only spend out if I really feel its worth it. This was on offer, so I thought id give it a try, and I have never looked back!
This is one of the few hairsprays that actually does most of what it promises on the bottle. I use it in conjunction with Boots curling mousse after I've washed my hair to help curls form and to reduce frizz, and it is highly effective at doing so! I also frequently use it on dry hair, to set my curls after curling round straighteners, or to set my newly straightened hair. It is fast drying, with a natural hold that doesn't weigh my hair down or make it feel sticky or heavy. My housemate used it on her curls for a ball, and said they stayed in all night with this spray as well, so its not just me that thinks it's good! It brushes out fairly easily with a bit of pain, and can also be used effectively by spraying it onto a comb, then combing through newly straightened hair to reduce static. My hair is SUPER-static when straight, so this has been a lifesaver for me!
I use it everyday, sometimes twice or 3 times, and the 500ml bottle still lasts me a good 4 months. Its not particularly portable due to the size, but its better value for money, so I just grit my teeth as I shove it into a small weekend bag. You can also get mini travel-size versions, but i don't tend to bother as they are normally a lot more expensive per 100 ml.
