Advantages: Fantastic hold all day for more complex styles

Disadvantages: Product build up, concrete like hold may be too much for some

Living in the delightful North East, the windswept look would appear to be favoured fashion due to regular windy (and cold) weather. On many an occasion after spending what feels like an hours on styling my hair, I have stepped out of the door and within 30 seconds the wind has blown and my hair looks like I have just woken up from a heavy night out.

Many hairsprays have been trialled and tested with varying success. Some have claimed to be "Extra Maximum Hold" and have been as successful as Newcastle have been in the premiership this season, others have made my hair resemble a concrete matted sticky type mess albeit my hair did not move and was held "securely".

I wouldn't usually purchase "Freeze hold" hairspray (after creating a concrete disaster with another brand of hairspray) but I accidentally picked it up when decided to try the TRESemme branded hairspray. and didn't realise that I had picked up Freeze hold as opposed to firm hold.

My mistake worked in my favour; I now simply couldn't live without a can of TRESemme freeze hold hairspray.

*** My Hair***

My hair currently is pretty long, about half way down my back in fact. My hair is quite thick. I have a lot of quite fine hair rather than the texture of my hair being thick and course. My hair is naturally straight but I often style it into curls. I use my GHD's to style which help the style to hold but without a good hairspray my curls are doomed. Especially if I step outside to brave the North East elements. In fact until I tried TRESemme I had not found a hairspray which held my curls in all day (and also all night)

To add to my hairspray requirements I have a side fringe which is cut so it is quite thick and pulls across from across my forehead . When it grows it becomes a pain and separates and strands fall into my eyes, therefore I need a firm hold hairspray which looks natural to keep my fringe in place. I also style my hair and wear my fringe in a (large) quiff, therefore to add volume and to secure the quiff/ back combing, a firm hold hairspray is a necessity.

So as you can probably imagine I have been quite a difficult customer to please when it comes to hairspray.

*** Price ***

For a 500ml can of Freeze Hold spray you will pay in the region of £4.00 in Boots, Superdrug and the beauty sections in the main supermarkets. The large cans are very good value. Even more so as they are often on special offer either a buy one get one free or a multibuy, two cans for £4 or two cans for £6.

The smaller 100ml cans are sold for £1.99 in Boots. In comparison to the larger cans these are more expensive. This is more than likely on the basis they are portable and there fore you pay more for the convenience. The 500ml bottles are so large they take up too much space in a handbag, therefore if you want to carry around a bottle of the TRESemme hairspray you have to opt for the 100ml size instead.

***Packaging***

The branding and labelling on the TRESemme Freeze hold hair spray bottles is in a similar style to other TRESemme products plain simple and what only can be described as functional. The picture shown on the Dooyoo page confused me slightly as the packaging for the Freeze hold product is actually a white can with a black lid and not a black can

As I have mentioned the 500ml bottle is very large and very bulky, whereas the 100ml bottle fits better into a handbag or desk drawer. Both size bottles have a plastic lid which covers to bottle spray and pops on and off. The lid is fine on the 500ml bottle as it stays on (due to the fact it sits on my dressing table) however with the 100ml bottle when it is in my handbag, the lid does not stay on and I often seem to lose it leaving the spray top exposed.

***Styling***

The claims on the tin are that :

"An ultra hold, fast drying hair spray that isn't sticky or tacky to the touch. Gives you total control of your hair - all day long"

The tin states that the product contains "gripping polymers" which deliver "heavy duty control" and the product holds through "windstorms and humidity".

Does it live up to its claims of holding through windstorms..... YES and I've tested it in the blustery North East.
Mr Lools has actually nicknamed the product "concrete head" hairspray. After a 3 minute walk from our car to a restaurant in 40mph blustery winds my hair stayed in place and in the style intended when I arrived into the restaurant (not at all windswept). In particular my fringe was still in place and had not separated nor looked like I had been blasted by the wind. The ultimate product test and I am glad to say that indeed my hair was frozen into place.

The product needs to be sprayed about 10 - 12 cm away from the hair. If you apply too much of this product or spray to close hair looks and feels wet. It takes about 5 minutes for hair to dry or "set" if this happens. It is much easier to apply more product once it is set rather than keep applying the product and waiting for it to dry.

The product has a scent but I do not think that this is unpleasant or overbearing. Elnette hairspray actually makes me feel sick and gives me a headache as you can smell it on your hair all day. After the initial spray and once the hairspray has dried. You cannot smell the TRESemme product.

On disadvantage with this being a "freeze hold" product the hair has no natural bounce back. So if you run your hands through your hair once it is "set" you will spoil the style and probably end up with your hand stuck in a mass of "frozen" concrete feeling hair. With some styles such as messy backcombing or messy curls this doesn't matter too much. But if your style is sleek or you use this to fix your fringe in place or as a quiff you will probably completely ruin your style and you will need to re-spray your hair back into place.

The hairspray claims not to flake and leave residue on the hair when it is brushed out. This is true if you put a very light covering on your hair but if you are securing a style in place that requires more product for greater hold (i.e. quiffs ) you will be left with some product build up in your hair. It is possible to shake this out/ brush it out but my advice would be to just wash your hair, which gets rid of the product easily.

- - - Every day/ straight - - -

Probably needs the least amount of product to be sprayed. A quick blast around the hair and a quick spray over my fringe keeps my hair in control and spots me from sporting the windswept look.

- - - Curls - - -

I use my GHD's to create curls. Both quite defined spiral curls and also loose large curls/ waves. Rather than having to spray each curl after styling which I have to do with most hair sprays I will spray my hair after a section of hair is curled

- - - Quiffs - - -

My quiff probably stands up to around 2 inches on my head. I back comb my fringe for volume. Spray TRESemme to create a matted mess. Then smooth the top layer of hair over the matted mess. , secure in place with clips and then another quick spray over the top of the mound of hair. The quiff is solid but actually doesn't look like concrete or caked in hairspray. After taking my hair out of this style there is a fair amount of product build up and clear/ white flakes in my hair which are visible. This does brush out but if you look closely you can still see the flakes around the hairline. Therefore hair needs washing to get rid of this.

**** Summary ***

Would I recommend this product if you are looking for a hair spray that keeps your hair VERY securely in place. If you have quite fine and thin hair I think that this product maybe a bit too heavy and weigh the hair down. If you style your hair into styles which need extra hold against extreme conditions this is definitely the hairspray for you. Fantastic product.

Summary: Hairspray that literally glues hair in place
