Advantages: Nice smell, lathers well

Disadvantages: Breaks hair, no split ends repaired

A few months ago I saw an advert in a magazine for a variety of Tresemme called Split Remedy, designed to repair split ends. As my hair is prone to split ends, particularly because I am quite lax at getting it trimmed, I thought this might be quite a good purchase. I've never actually used any Tresemme products before, I had the impression they were quite good.

The Tresemme Split Remedy Shampoo comes in a black bottle. I bought it along with the matching conditioner on offer in Boots for 2 for £4 - I think the price per bottle was somewhere around £3.

The shampoo is easy to get out of the bottle, even when there is not much left, which means you can get your full moneys worth out of the bottle. It opens with a flip top which you push in, so there's no messing about with lids. The shampoo itself is a fairly standard white, and the fragrance could be just about any shampoo with an indistinct scent - it simply smells clean and soapy.

I found that the shampoo lathered up very easily, and was easy to massage through my hair. It rinsed out easily, and didn't require any extra attention or time under the shower. Once it was rinsed out, my hair felt pleasantly clean. However one problem was that it seemed to cause more hair to come loose in my hands than normal - this is something I have a problem with generally, as my hair is so fine and breakable, but there was definitely more breaking when using the Tresemme shampoo. Obviously, with such fine hair, I'd rather lose as little as possible, so this did not endear me to the Tresemme Split Remedy Shampoo.

I used this in conjunction with the Split Remedy Conditioner, so the effects when dry were from the combined use of shampoo and conditioner. I found that my hair was soft and manageable, but even once the bottle was finished I could see no improvement on my split ends whatsoever - this is from using the shampoo and conditioner at least every two days.

I'm not terribly fussy about my shampoo, but I did feel let down by the Tresemme Split Remedy Shampoo. Not only did it somehow cause more hair breakage when I was using it, but it didn't even do the slightest bit of repair to my split ends. I generally expect shampoos and hair products not to deliver on their promises, but I was hopeful that this one would. Its failure, and the problem of hair breakage, means that I definitely won't be buying it again, and am unlikely to try any other varieties of Tresemme.

Summary: A split end repairer which doesn't repair split ends
